Fiber reinforced materials have favorable mechanical properties. Moreover, the strength to weight ratios of this material is superior to those of most alloys. Comparing to the metals, it showed many other advantages as well, including non-corrosiveness, translucency and easy repair characteristic. Since, it has the potential for the chair-side and laboratory fabrication, it is not surprising that fiber reinforced composites offer the potential for use in various applications in dentistry. To make the well-fitted restorations, Fiber reinforced composite (FRC) has been suggested as an alternative framework material for the implant supported fixed prosthesis. Two fixed partial denture fabrication procedures were tried. Vectris fiber was pressed to the EsthetiCone gold cylinder on the implant positioned cast. And then, Targis were added on it. In the other method, we used the customized component using UCLA abutment. The beads for retaining the Vectris fiber were added on the abutment. If careful laboratory and clinical techniques were done, these two techniques would fulfill the demands of the esthetics and strength.

This study presents the effect of applied pressure on the preform deformation during squeeze casting of $Al_2O_3$ short fiber reinforced aluminum alloy (AC8A) metal matrix composites. A preliminary model based on the general beam theory is suggested for the prediction of the preform deformation. Two different commercially available $Al_2O_3$ short fiber (Saffil, Kaowool) were used to study the influence of the fibers on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the squeeze cast $Al/Al_2O_3$ composites. The composites were fabricated with the applied pressure of 75 MPa which was found to be the optimum condition for the squeeze casting of the composites in this study. For the amorphous Kaowool fiber, hard crystalline Mullite phase was formed with heat treatment. Both of amorphous and the crystallized Kaowool fibers were used to fabricate $Al/Al_2O_3$ composites. Microhardness of crystallized Kaowool fiber revealed higher than that of the amorphous Kaowool fiber in the squeeze cast composites. It was also found that the wear resistance of Kaowool fiber reinforced composites increased with the amount of Mullite.
A closed form solution of a composite mechanics system is performed for the investigation of elastic-plastic behavior in order to predict fiber stresses, fiber/matrix interfacial shear stresses, and matrix yielding behavior in short fiber reinforced metal matrix composites. The model is based on a theoretical development that considers the stress concentration between fiber ends and the propagation of matrix plasticity and is compared with the results of a conventional shear lag model as well as a modified shear lag model. For the region of matrix plasticity, slip mechanisms between the fiber and matrix which normally occur at the interface are taken into account for the derivation. Results of predicted stresses for the small-scale yielding as well as the large-scale yielding in the matrix are compared with other theories. The effects of fiber aspect ratio are also evaluated for the internal elastic-plastic stress field. It is found that the incorporation of strong fibers results in substantial improvements in composite strength relative to the fiber/matrix interfacial shear stresses, but can produce earlier matrix yielding because of intensified stress concentration effects. It is also found that the present model can be applied to investigate the stress transfer mechanism between the elastic fiber and the elastic-plastic matrix, such as in short fiber reinforced metal matrix composites.
To determine three-dimensional fiber orientation states in injection-molded short fiber composites a CLSM (Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope) is used. Since the CLSM optically sections the composites, more than two cross-sections either on or below the surface of the composite can be obtained. Three dimensional fiber orientation states can be determined with geometric parameters of fibers on two parallel cross-sections. For experiment, carbon fiber reinforced polystyrene is examined by the CLSM. Geometric parameters of fibers are measured by image analysis. In order to compactly describe fiber orientation states, orientation tensors are used. Orientation tensors are determined at different positions of the prepared specimen. Three dimensional orientation states are obtained without the difficulty in determining the out-of-plane angles by utilizing images on two parallel planes acquired by the CLSM. Orientation states are different at different positions and show the shell-core structure along the thickness of the specimen.

This paper deals with the residual strength characteristics of composite materials under the environment of high temperature and humidity. Two types of GFRP, one with unidirection and randomly oriented, are used to investigate the features of moisture absorption and the residual strength. The results show that, when exposed longterms in high temperature and humidity, the randomly oriented composites is more stable than the unidirection one.

The paper presents a numerical study to evaluate the phase velocities and attenuations of the average longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves resulting from multiple scattering in fiber-reinforced composites. A computational procedure developed in this work is first used to produce a random, yet largely even distribution of fibers. Both the viscoelastic epoxy matrix and lossless randomly distributed graphite fibers are modeled using the mass-spring-dashpot lattice model, with no damping for the latter. By numerically simulating ultrasonic through-transmission tests using this direct model of composites, phase velocities and attenuations of the longitudinal and shear waves through the composite are found as functions of frequency or fiber concentration. The numerical results are observed to generally agree with the corresponding results in the literature. Discrepancies found in some detail aspects, particularly in the attenuation results, are also addressed.
In this article, the present activities regarding research and development of continuous SiC fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CFCC) in Japan are reviewed. The key technologies in SiC fiber composites are interphase between fiber and matrix and its oxidation resistance. To improve oxidation resistance of interphase, various kinds of technologies such as environment barrier coating, high dense matrix, unti-oxidation matrix, multi-layered intephase have been developed. It is suggested that high performance, affordable processing cost, and excellent reliability will be important factors to be in practical use of CMCs in future.

Recently, DFRCCs (Ductile Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites), materials with remarkable ductility when compared to ordinary fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC), have been developed and studied actively in the US, Japan, and many European countries. The transformation of failure behavior from brittle to ductile is achieved by incorporating with fracture mechanics concept especially micro-mechanical models approach of cementitious composite materials in manufacturing ordinary fiber-reinforced composites. The purpose of this study is to accurately understand the shear behavior of DFRCC repaired RC beams. Using a four-point bending test, the shear strengths and shear stress-deflection relations of DFRCC repaired RC specimens are obtained. The results show that DFRCC can be effectively used for repairing materials for concrete structures.

In this study, the effect of natural jute fiber volume fraction on the bond characteristics of polyolefin based macro fiber in natural jute fiber reinforced cement composites, including bond strength, interface toughness, and microstructure analysis are presented. The experimental results on polyolefin based macro fiber pullout test of different conditions are reported. Natural jute fiber volume fractions ranging from 0.1% to 0.2% are used in the mix proportions. Pullout tests are conducted to measure the bond characteristics of polyolefin based macro fiber from natural jute fiber reinforced cement composites. Test results are found that the incorporation of natural jute fiber can effectively enhance the polyolefin based macro fiber-cement matrix interfacial properties. The bond strength and interface toughness between polyolefin based macro fiber and natural jute fiber reinforced cement composites increases with the volume fraction of natural jute fiber. The microstructural observation confirms the findings on the interface bond mechanism drawn from the fiber pullout test results.
