  • PURPOSE. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the mechanical properties (bending strength and hardness) of seven different fiber reinforced composite posts, in relation to their microstructural characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two hundred eighty posts were divided into seven groups of 40, one group for each type of post analyzed. Within each group, 15 posts were subjected to three-point bending strength test, 15 to a microhardess meter for the Knoop hardness, and 10 to Scanning Electron Microscope in order to determine the diameter of the fibers and the percentage of fibers embedded in the matrix. To compare the flexural strength in relation to the type of fiber, matrix, and the hardness of the posts, a Kruskal-Wallis H test was used. The Jonckheere-Terpstra test was used to determine if the volume percent of fibers in the post influenced the bending strength. RESULTS. The flexural strength and the hardness depended on the type of fibers that formed the post. The lower flexural strength of a post could be due to deficient bonding between the fiber and the resin matrix. CONCLUSION. According to the results, other factors, besides the microstructural characteristics, may also influence the mechanical properties of the post. The feature that has more influence on the mechanical properties of the posts is the type of fiber.

  • The present paper investigates the post heating behavior of concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars, namely carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. Thirty rectangular concrete beams were prepared and cured for 28 days. Then, beams were either subjected (in duplicates) to elevated temperatures in the range (100 to $500^{\circ}C$) or left at room temperature before tested under four point loading for flexural response. Experimental results showed that beams, reinforced with CFRP and GFRP bars and subjected to temperatures below $300^{\circ}C$, showed better mechanical performance than that of corresponding ones with conventional reinforcing steel bars. The results also revealed that ultimate load capacity and stiffness pertaining to beams with FRP reinforcement decreased, yet their ultimate deflection and toughness increased with higher temperatures. All beams reinforced with FRP materials, except those post-heated to $500^{\circ}C$, failed by concrete crushing followed by tension failure of FRP bars.

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate the effects of hydrogen peroxide pretreatment and heat activation of silane on the shear bond strength of fiber-reinforced composite posts to resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The specimens were prepared to evaluate the bond strength of epoxy resin-based fiber posts (D.T. Light-Post) to dual-curing resin cement (RelyX U200). The specimens were divided into four groups (n=18) according to different surface treatments: group 1, no treatment; group 2, silanization; group 3, silanization after hydrogen peroxide etching; group 4, silanization with warm drying at $80^{\circ}C$ after hydrogen peroxide etching. After storage of the specimens in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, the shear bond strength (in MPa) between the fiber post and resin cement was measured using a universal testing machine. The fractured surface of the fiber post was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc analysis with Tukey's HSD test (${\alpha}=0.05$). RESULTS. Silanization of the fiber post (Group 2) significantly increased the bond strength in comparison with the non treated control (Group 1) (P<.05). Heat drying after silanization also significantly increased the bond strength (Group 3 and 4) (P<.05). However, no effect was determined for hydrogen peroxide etching before applying silane agent (Group 2 and 3) (P>.05). CONCLUSION. Fiber post silanization and subsequent heat treatment ($80^{\circ}C$) with warm air blower can be beneficial in clinical post cementation. However, hydrogen peroxide etching prior to silanization was not effective in this study.

  • Objectives: This study compared the effect of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and ammonia ($NH_3$) plasmas on the bond strength of resin cement to fiber posts with conventional treatments. Materials and Methods: Sixty-five fiber posts were divided into 5 groups: Control (no surface treatment); $H_2O_2$ (24% hydrogen peroxide for 1 min); Blasting (blasting with aluminum oxide for 30 sec); $NH_3$ ($NH_3$ plasma treatment for 3 min); HMDSO (HMDSO plasma treatment for 15 min). After the treatments, the Ambar adhesive (FGM Dental Products) was applied to the post surface (n = 10). The fiber post was inserted into a silicon matrix that was filled with the conventional resin cement Allcem Core (FGM). Afterwards, the post/cement specimens were cut into discs and subjected to a push-out bond strength (POBS) test. Additionally, 3 posts in each group were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The POBS data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The Blasting and $NH_3$ groups showed the highest POBS values. The HMDSO group showed intermediate POBS values, whereas the Control and $H_2O_2$ groups showed the lowest POBS values. Conclusion: Blasting and $NH_3$ plasma treatments were associated with stronger bonding of the conventional resin cement Allcem to fiber posts, in a procedure in which the Ambar adhesive was used.

  • Although fiber-reinforced posts have been widely used, they sometimes fail to obtain sufficient retention because of an extremely large canal space. To address this, several techniques have been introduced including relining of the fiber-reinforced posts. Here, we used a relined glass-fiber post to increase retention and fitness to the root canal in a crown reattachment case. The relining procedure was performed by using an indirect method on the working cast. This case also highlights the esthetic concerns regarding dehydration of the attached crown fragment.

  • Experiments were carried out in humans to assess the relationship between viscosity and post-prandial glucose response of soluble fibers. Eight(3 male and 5 female) healthy individuals were tested for their glucose response after taking control meals or 3 test fiber meals of different viscosities. Meal viscosity of the test food was adjusted to be between 200 and 70, 000 cps. There was a significant increase in post-prandial glucose response(p=0.01) in control meals by solely increasing the volume of water. Fiber with the highest viscosity konjac mannan demonstrated the lowest relative glucose response(70.1$\pm$6.6), followed by medium viscosity xanthan (79.3$\pm$8.7)and low viscosity psyllium (86.3$\pm$10.5). The difference is significant at the level of p<0.05. However, no significant difference in relative glucose response of the same fiber was found when the 4 levels of water were added to make different meal viscosity of each fiber (p=0.476). This result suggested that hypoglycemic action of soluble dietary fibers is related to fiber viscosity rather than meal viscosity.

  • Statement of problem : Most posts are metallic, but in response to the need for a post that possesses optical properties compatible with an all-ceramic crown. an esthetic post has been developed. Although there have been many studies about the esthetic post materials, 3-dimensional finite element studies about the stress distribution of them are in rare. Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate comparatively the distribution of stresses of the restored, endodontically treated maxillary incisors with the esthetic post materials and the displacement on the cement layer on simulated occlusal loading by using a 3-dimensional finite element analysis model. Material and method : Four 3-dimensional finite element models were constructed in a view of a maxillary central incisor, a post, a core, and the supporting tissues to investigate the stresses in various esthetic posts and cores and the displacement on the cement layer (Model 1 ; Cast gold post and core, Model 2 ; Glass fiber post with composite core, Model 3 ; Zirconia post with composite core. Model 4 ; Zirconia post with ceramic core). Force of 300N was applied to the incisal edge and the cingulum (centric stop point) with the angle of 135-degree to the long axis of the tooth. Results : 1. The stresses and displacement on the incisal edge were higher than on the cingulum 2. The stresses in dentin were the highest in Model 2 (Glass fiber post with composite core), and the second was Model 3, the third Model 1, and the lowest Model 4. 3. The stresses in post and core were the highest in Model 4 (Zirconia post with ceramic core), and the second was Model 1, the third Model 3, and the lowest Model 2. 4. The displacement on the cement layer was the highest in Model 2 (Glass fiber post with composite core), and the second was Model 3, the third Model 1, and the lowest Model 4. Conclusion : When a functional maximum bite force was applied, the distribution of stresses or the esthetic post and core materials and the displacement on the cement layer were a little different. It seems that restoring extensively damaged incisors with esthetic post and core materials would be decided according to the remaining tooth structure.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the muscle mass and fiber number on post-mortem metabolic rates and pork quality. Carcass traits, muscle fiber characteristics, and type of fiber composition were evaluated using a sample of 200 cross-bred pigs. The muscle mass was divided into two groups according to carcass weight and loin-eye area measurements (heavy or light). In addition, the muscle histological characteristics were divided into two groups according to the muscle fiber density and total number of muscle fibers (high or low). All the carcass traits were significantly different in the muscle mass groups. Increasing weight significantly affected the cross-sectional area (CSA) of all fibers. The low group, which had a low muscle fiber number indicating a larger CSA of fibers, and especially the heavy-low group had the highest CSA levels of fibers. The fiber number percentage and the area percentage were significantly different in the groups categorized by fiber number. The heavy-high group indicated a normal rate of pH decline and the R-value. In addition, pigs with a heavy muscle mass and high muscle fiber number indicated normal drip loss, lightness, and protein denaturation. The present results suggest that increasing the total muscle fiber number has a beneficial effect on increasing the muscle mass without deteriorating the meat quality.
