  • The friction between soils and the geosynthetics varies depending upon the types and characteristics of the involved materials. Many engineers have studied the frictional characteristics between the two materials in may way but the results obtained so far is not satisfactory. In this study the frictional characteristics between the soil and the geogrid were examined through laboratory direct shear test and pull-out test. Tests were conducted on two different types of geogrid: Polyester grids(PET) which are currently used and newly developed fiber-glass grids(FG). Result showed that FG grid yielded smaller displacements and uniform displacement distribution mainly due to much higher stiffness. Therefore, it is expected that more efficientbfl support and displacement control can be achieved by the FG grid.

  • 4 types rubber related geosynthetics were manufactured to examine the performance to for applications to the civil and geotechnical fields, especially to the road construction. Reinforcement and water barrier function of these geosynthetics were interpreted as the important properties. Fiber glass mat based and geogrid based geosynthetics showed the excellent mechanical properties as. Also elastomeric bitumen based geosynthetic showed the highest permittivity. From this, it i s thought that this geosynthetic is suitable for water barrier under specific load condition.

  • Rubber related geosynthetics(GS) as reinforcement and water barrier materials were manufactured by thermal bonding method and examined the their performance for applications to civil and environmental engineering fields. The spunbonded polyester nonwoven, fiber glass mat and fabric type geogrid of a high tenacity polyester filament were used as matrix and polyester film, elastomeric bitumen with SBS polymer and asphalt were used as reinforcements to manufacture the rubber related geosynthetics. A fiber glass mat and geogrid matrix GS showed more excellent mechanical properties and nonwoven and elastomeric bitumen matrix showed the more excellent permittivity. Softening points of rubber and asphalt mixture showed no difference and dimensional stability at high temperature, $120^{\circ}C$, represented no significant shrinkage. Resistance to ultraviolet of rubber related geosynthetics showed no visible alteration.

  • This study was carried out to select most efficient bonding methods of geogrid at the interface of old concrete pavement before placing asphalt overlay layer for reflection cracking retardation. Three bonding methods, a RSC-4 emulsified asphalt, a compound and an unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) were compared in this study. Three types of asphalt mixture (AC 60-80, RLDPE 8%, PG 76-22) and a dense-graded aggregate were used for overlay asphalt pavement. A reinforcing material which consists of a woven fabric underneath a glass fiber grid was used. An expedite test method which is for simulating mixed mode (mode I and II) fracture test was performed using a wheel tracker in laboratory. Cracking development by load repetition was measured as fatigue life (number of load cycle) and expansion of specimen body were measured for each test specimen. The results showed that UPR was the best and RSC-4 the next. But considering field applicability, RSC-4 was considered as an appropriate choice for bonding reinforcing material.
