  • As a feasibility study on development of a gamma imaging probe, we developed a scintillating film-based gamma imaging detector that can obtain scintillation images with information of gamma-ray distribution. The scintillating film-based gamma imaging detector was composed of a sensing probe, an image intensifier, and a beam profiler. To detect and transmit scintillation image, the sensing probe was fabricated by coupling a scintillating film, a fiber-optic image conduit, and a fiber-optic taper, consecutively. First, the optical images of USAF 1951 resolution target were obtained and then, modulation transfer function values were calculated to test the image quality of the sensing probe. Second, we measured the scintillation images according to the activity of the 137Cs and the distance between the surface of 137Cs and the distal-end of sensing probe. Finally, the intensities of scintillating light as functions of the activity and the distance were evaluated from the region of interest in the scintillation image. From the results of this study, it is expected that a fiber-optic gamma imaging detector can be developed to detect gamma-rays emitted from radiopharmaceuticals during radioimmunoguided surgery.

  • In this study, plastic optical fiber sensors which can measure thermal neutron dose in a mixed neutron-gamma field are developed and characterized. Using $^{252}Cf$ and $^{60}Co$ sources, the scintillators suitable for thermal neutron detection, are tested and the scintillating lights generated from a plastic optical fiber sensor in the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (kuca) core are measured. Also, the distributions of thermal neutron and gamma-ray are measured in a mixed field as a function of the distance from the center of the reactor core at KUCA and the distribution of thermal neutron is obtained using a subtraction method. Sensitivity of the fiber-optic radiation sensor system is about 0.49 V/mW according to power of the KUCA core and its relative error is about 1.2 %.

  • We developed a miniaturized multi-dimensional radiation sensor system consisting of an inorganic scintillator array and plastic optical fibers. This system can be applied to remotely obtain the radioactivity distribution and identify the radionuclides in radioactive waste by utilizing a scanning method. Variation in scintillation light was measured in two-dimensional regions of interest and then converted into radioactivity distribution images. Outliers present in the images were removed by using a digital filter to make the hot spot location more accurate and cubic interpolation was applied to make the images smoother and clearer. Next, gamma-ray spectroscopy was performed to identify the radionuclides, and three-dimensional volume scanning was also performed to effectively find the hot spot using the proposed array sensor.

  • The partial-discharge(PD) is accompanied by physical and chemical phenomena, such as heat, light, noise, gas, chemical transformation, electric current, and electromagnetic radiation. The PD can be detected by measuring one of these changes. Although some techniques are employed in this purpose, several obstacles interfere with an on-line measurement. Now a fiber-optic sensor for detecting ultrasonics is suggested for the on line measurement system with high accuracy. In this paper, an optical fiber sensor utilizing the principal of Mach-Zehnder interferometer was proposed to detect the discharge signal.

  • We fabricated a fiber-optic alpha/beta detector, which is composed of a sensing probe, a plastic optical fiber, a photomultiplier tube, and a multichannel analyzer, to obtain the energy spectra of radioactive isotopes. As inorganic scintillators of a sensing probe, a ZnS(Ag) film was coupled with a $CaF_2$(Eu) crystal for alpha and beta spectroscopy. In this study, $^{210}Po$ and $^{90}Sr$ were used as alpha and beta sources, respectively, and we measured the radiation energy spectra using a fiber-optic alpha/beta detector to identify alpha and beta emitting radionuclides for nuclear medicine application. Also, the variations of energy spectrum were obtained according to the length of plastic optical fiber.

  • Nuclear containment building is used as second blockage to protect us from a radiation leakage caused by the natural disaster or any accidents, so it's safety is important and must be kept with continuous surveillance. In this study, we measured the strain of a nuclear containment building's wall by using FBG sensor and investigated the structural safety of a nuclear containment building. 50 FBG strain sensors and 18 FBG strain sensors were attached on the side wall and upper dome of a nuclear containment building, respectively. We measured the strains of the outside concrete wall during the Structural Integrity Test (SIT) of a nuclear containment building. The strain of an upper dome was larger than that of a side wall, about $200{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. And the very small strain was measured at vertical direction of a side wall. These experimental results were used to evaluate the structural health of nuclear containment building.

  • Electro Explosive Devices can be susceptible to electromagnetic interference. When these components are exposed to external electromagnetic fields, it may cause to induce sufficient current to generate enough heat for an inadvertent detonation. It is almost impossible to monitor the event of firing throughout the electromagnetic environment test. The survivability of EED for hazards of electromagnetic radiation is investigated. A fiber optic sensor is installed near the bridge wire after removing explosive material in order to measure the induced current on the bridge wire. The length of lead-wire of the EED fabricated is around 15 cm.

  • In this study, we have measured temperature distribution using infrared optical fibers during radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Infrared radiations generated from the water around inserted electrode are transferred by silver halide optical fibers and are measured by a thermopile sensor. Also, the output voltages of a thermopile sensor are compared with those of the thermocouple recorder. It is expected that a noncontact temperature sensor using an infrared optical fiber can be developed for the temperature monitoring during RFA treatments based on the results of this study.
