  • This study addressed a procedure to carry out an experimental study on a behavior of simple and continuous concrete beams. For this purpose, sample concrete beams were fabricated and sensors for the measurement of strains and deflections were attached both on the surface of the beams and inside them. Two types of sensors were used to measure strains associated with loading: electric resistance strain sensors and fiber optic sensors. Displacement gauges were also attached on the bottoms of beams to investigate the behavior of beams more rationally. The behavior of the beams was then evaluated throughout the results measured from different sensors while they were subject to steady loading up to failure. From results of this study, it was found that concurrent use of sensors and displacement gauges is helpful in investigating the behavior of concrete beams more effectively. Especially, combined-type strain sensors specifically fabricated in this experiment were found not to be affected by the occurrence of cracks so significantly and to be very effective in monitoring strains of concrete structure. It was also observed that beams show nonlinear force-displacement relationship and reinforcing bars take charge of resisting the external force once cracks occur in concrete beams.

  • We adopt the PASTEL catalog combined with SIMBAD radial velocities as a testing standard to validate the stellar parameters (effective temperature $T_{eff}$, surface gravity log g, metallicity [Fe/H] and radial velocity $V_r$) from the first data release (DR1) of The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. After applying data reduction and temperature constraints to the sample obtained by cross-identification, we compare the stellar parameters from DR1 and PASTEL. The results show that the DR1 results are reliable under certain conditions. We derive a dispersion of 110 K, 0.19 dex, 0.11 dex and $4.91kms^{-1}$ in specified effective temperature ranges, for $T_{eff}$, log g, [Fe/H] and $V_r$ respectively. Systematic errors are negligible except for those of $V_r$. In addition, for stars with PASTEL [Fe/H] < -1:5, the metallicities in DR1 are systematically higher than those in PASTEL.

  • $TiO_2$-doped activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were successfully prepared as capacitive deionization (CDI) electrode materials by facile ultrasonication-assisted process. ACFs were treated with titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) and isopropyl alcohol solutions of different concentrations and then calcinated by ultrasonication without heat-treatment. The results show that a certain amount of anatase $TiO_2$ was present on the ACF surface. The specific capacitance of the $TiO_2$-doped ACF electrode was remarkably improved (by 93.8% at scan rate of $50mV\;s^{-1}$) over that of the untreated ACF electrode, despite decreases in the specific surface area and total pore volume upon $TiO_2$ doping. From the CDI experiments, the salt adsorption capacity and charge efficiency of the sample with TTIP percent concentration of 15% were found to considerably increase by 71.9 and 57.1%, respectively. These increases are attributed to the improved wettability of the electrode, which increases the number of surface active sites and facilitates salt ion diffusion in the ACF pores. Additionally, the Ti-OH groups of $TiO_2$ act as electrosorption sites, which increases the electrosorption capacity.

  • Objectives: We previously developed a dish-based semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Korean adolescents and reported that it had reasonable reliability and validity. The objective of the current study was to construct a web-based dietary evaluation system applying the FFQ for Korean adolescents and examine its applicability in the context of reliability and validity. Methods: A web-based food frequency questionnaire system was designed using a comprehensive approach, incorporating not only dietary data survey but also up-to-date nutrition information and individualized eating behavior guidelines. A convenience sample of 50 boys and girls aged 12~18 years agreed to participate in the study and completed the FFQ twice and 3 days of dietary recall on the developed website during a two-month period. The FFQ's reliability and validity was examined using correlation and cross classification analysis. We also measured participants' subjective levels of the web site's usability, visual effect, understanding, and familiarity. Results: Spearman correlation coefficients for reliability ranged from 0.74 (for vitamin A) to 0.94 (for energy). From cross-classification analyses, the proportion of subjects in the same intake quartile was highest for energy (82.0%) and lowest for vitamin A (56.0%). With regard to validity analysis, Spearman correlation coefficients ranged from 0.34 (for fiber) to 0.79 (for energy). The proportions of subjects in the opposite categories between the first FFQ and 3-day diet recall data were generally low from 0.00% (for fat) to 36.2% (for sodium). Average subjective levels of the website's usability, visual effect, understanding, and familiarity were all found to be over 4 points out of 5 points. Conclusions: The web-based dietary evaluation system developed can serve as a valid and attractive tool for administering FFQ to Korean adolescents.

  • Interference and jamming are becoming increasing concern to a radar system nowdays. AESA(Active Electronically Steered Array) antennas and adaptive beamforming(ABF), in which antenna beam patterns can be modified to reject the interference, offer a potential solution to overcome the problems encountered. In this paper, we've developed a planar active phased array radar system, in which ABF, target detection and tracking algorithm operate in real-time. For the high output power and the low noise figure of the antenna, we've designed the S-band TRMs based on GaN HEMT. For real-time processing, we've used wavelenth division multiplexing technique on fiber optic communication which enables rapid data communication between the antenna and the signal processor. Also, we've implemented the HW and SW architecture of Real-time Signal Processor(RSP) for adaptive beamforming that uses SMI(Sample Matrix Inversion) technique based on MVDR(Minimum Variance Distortionless Response). The performance of this radar system has been verified by near-field and far-field tests.

  • A research was performed to evaluate a use of shredder residue to currently dispose of at landfills. Laboratory analyses were conducted to determine especially the fuel characteristics of shredder residue. For this aim, shredder residue was classified by the particle size as well as by the type of material and the content of Cl, S, ash, and calorific value were determined. Due to the chlorinated plastic content of shredder residue, mean concentration of Cl was found to exceed 4wt% except one sample while that of S was ranged from 0.25 to 0.39 wt%. As far as calorific value was concemed, plastic was observed to be more than 10,000 kcal/kg while wood/paper and fiber accounted for approximately 4,000 kcal/kg. Shredder residue was found to contain varying trace amounts of metal elements, including Fe of 6∼8.5 wt%. Hg and Cr(VI) were not detected, however, while Cd was contained as small as 0.0004-0.0009 wt%.

  • This study investigated the effect of $2\%$ addition of pectin and alginate on the Physicochemical and retrogradation Properties of Jeungpyun, a Korean traditional fermented rice cake. The volume of batters with alginate and Pectin was significantly larger than that of control. Jeungpyun samples with Pectin and alginate had a larger volume with uniform and smaller cell size. All samples showed largest foaming capability after second fermentation. Foaming capability of the control ($0\%$ addition of pectin and alginate) was significantly larger than that of the treated samples. The amount of reducing sugar tended to increase during fermentation but decreased after steaming, which was due to the increase in hydrolysis of starch. On the contrary, the content of free sugar was slightly decreased during fermentation but slightly increased after steaming. The control contained the largest amount of free sugar after steaming. The microstructure of starch particles after fermentation showed completely dispersed starch granules with air bubbles. After steaming, the structure was sponge-like in all samples. Samples with added alginate and pectin had significantly higher water binding capacity than those of the control. All samples showed noticeably increased solubility and swelling power at $70^{circ}C$ with the control being significantly lower than the treated samples. Retrogradation was measured with $\alpha$-amylase and the retrogradation process of the sample with added alginate and pectin proceeded slower than that of the control. The relative crystallinity was observed through X-ray diffraction method and samples with added alginate and pectin had smaller crystallinity and delayed retrogradation compared to the control. Thus, Jeungpyun with the addition of alginate and Pectin demonstrated improved functionality and dietary fiber addition effect. The storage period of was extended as the retrogradation rate was delayed by the addition of dietary fibers.

  • This study is for the consideration of the existence tendency of Kudoa septempunctata in olive flounder. In general, muscle has shown a strong PCR positive reaction in spores containing tissues rather than non-containing tissues. However, blood PCR results showed opposed tendency. In various organs of the tested fish containing spores in muscle tissue, heart had shown positive reaction along with muscle at PCR analysis. Muscle fiber necrosis was observed at the histological observation, and this degeneration was common in both samples. The one sample was the PCR positive muscle containing spore and the other was the PCR positive muscle non-containing spore. Both of muscle tissues indicated a positive reaction at ISH (in-situ hybridization) against K. septempunctata.

  • The fabrication of gelatin nanofibers by electro spinning has been examined using the TFE/DW co-solvent system. It has been found that no beads-on-string structure was formed for the solution containing ionic salts. The resulting fibers exhibited a uniform diameter ranging from 110 to 125 nm. As the concentration of ionic salts increases, the beads become smaller and more spindle like, due to the increase of viscosity and conductivity. The addition of ionic salts induces a higher charge density on the surface of ejected jet during spinning, leading that higher elongation forces are applied to the jet. The higher enhancement of viscosity and conductivity was observed in gelatin solutions by the use of divalent salt. However, the concentration of ionic salts scarcely affected the variation of fiber diameter. While very low crystallinity was observed from XRD pattern for the sample containing no ionic salt, which increased with increasing the concentration of ionic salts.
