  • This paper presents experimental results of advanced investigation carried out on the beams reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rebar and stirrups. Twelve beams reinforced with GFRP and one beam with steel reinforcement of size $230{\times}300{\times}2000mm$ were investigated. Longitudinal reinforcement, shear span and spacing of stirrups were the main variables to form the set. In advanced testing three types of strain gauges for steel, composite and concrete surface were applied to observe strain/stress development against the applied load. Live data were recorded from four strain gauges applied on stirrups, one at center on longitudinal reinforcement, two on the concrete surface and central deflection during the test. Although the focus of the paper was mainly on the behavior of GFRP shear reinforcement, other parallel data were observed for the completeness of the test. Design recommendations of ISIS Canada Design Manual (2007), Japan Society of Civil Engineers (1997) and American Concrete Institute (ACI-440.1R-06) were reviewed. Shear design predictions were compared with experimental results in which it was observed that all the three standards provided conservative predictions. However, ACI found most efficient compare to other two there is room to improve the efficiency of the recommendations.

  • Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA), mechanical properties like modulus and phase transition temperature of polyester composites of banana fibers (treated and untreated) are measured simultaneously. The shifting of phase transition temperature is observed in some treatments. The performance of the composite depends to a large extent on the adhesion between polymer matrix and the reinforcement. This is often achieved by surface modification of the matrix or the filler. Banana fiber was modified chemically to achieve improved interfacial interaction between the fiber and the polyester matrix. Various silanes and alkalies were used to modify the fiber surface. Chemical modification was found to have a profound effect on the fiber/matrix interaction, which is evident from the values of phase transition temperatures. Of the various chemical treatments, simple alkali treatment with 1% NaOH was found to be the most effective.

  • Lightweight polymer concrete with steel fiber can be used for thin panel, high building and large span structures due to its may advantages such as its durability, low weight, control of crack propagation, high strength and toughness. This study experimented about steel fiber reinforcement of lightweight polymer concrete using synthetic lightweight aggregate. The test result shows that the maximum strain and elastic modulus are in the range of $0.012{\sim}0.014\;and\;50.2{\times}10^3{\sim}51.0{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2$, respectively. The flexural load-deflection curves after maximum load are shown in smoothly with increase of steel fiber content

  • Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars gain increasingly more attention as a reinforcing option for concrete because of their corrosion resistance and non-magnetism. GFRP reinforcement for concrete does not have the same shape as steel reinforcement. Therefore, the bond performance of FRP bars, unlike that of steel, is dependent on their design, manufacture and mechanical properties. This paper studied the effect of high strength concrete on the bond strength of GFRP bars. Twenty-nine specimens having different compressive strength of concrete were tested in order to examine the bond behavior of GFRP bars.

  • Recently new materials, such as fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) and other composite materials are being applied in reinforcing plate or plate or prestressing cables of concrete structures. Although these new materials themselves show the excellent durability and high strength, the bond behaviour between concrete surface and FRP is not well recognized. Therefore, this paper propose a evaluation method for effective bond length between fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) and concrete. To develop the evaluation method, this paper presents a review of current evaluation methods for effective bond length. These methods are compared by single face test, expose merits and demerits. And based on them, new evaluation method was developed. Finally, the new method was compared with existing methods to verify a adequateness for evaluation of effective bond length.

  • The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) for torsional strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) single cell box beams has been analyzed considerably by researchers worldwide. However, little attention has been paid to torsional strengthening of multicell box girders in terms of both experimental and numerical research. This paper reports the experimental work in an overall investigation for torsional strengthening of multicell box section RC girders with externally-bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer CFRP strips. Numerical work was carried out using non-linear finite element modeling (FEM). Good agreement in terms of torque-twist behavior, steel and CFRP reinforcement responses, and crack patterns was achieved. The unique failure modes of all the specimens were modeled correctly as well.

  • Multidirectional reinforcement is aimed primarily at overcoming interlaminar weakness, hence a major interest lies in the mechanical properties of multidirectional carbon/carbon composites. Mechanical properties depend on the type of carbon fiber, the size of the fiber bundle, the spacing of the bundles, the angles of the bundles relative to the axes of the block, and matrix formation. In the present studies, PAN based carbon fiber preforms manufactured different size of unit cell have been prepared. Densification of these used high pressure infiltration and carbonization technique with coal tar pitch as matrix precursor was carried out. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to study the fracture behavior of composites. The size of unit cell of the preforms has considerably affected on the flexural properties as well as microstructure of the carbon/carbon composites.

  • Recently, the Near-Surface-Mounting method using Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has been developed and applied to the reinforcement of many concrete structural members. However, as a part of the fire resistance design, there is a lack of research related to fire insulation for the areas reinforced with FRP. In case of NSM reinforcement, there is a difference in the transferred temperature from the external surface to the groove corresponding to the location of the groove where the FRP is embedded, and the effect of this should be reflected in the fireproof insulation design. Therefore, in this study, after forming grooves for surface embedding in concrete blocks, fireproof insulation reinforcement was performed using Calcium Silicate (CS) fireproof board and an experiment to evaluate the temperature transfer was performed. By observing the temperature at these groove positions, the reduction of temperature transfer according to fireproof insulation detail was studied. As a result, when the NSM-FRP is properly fire-insulated using the CS-based fireproof board, the epoxy inside the groove does not reach its glass transition temperature until the external temperature reaches $800^{\circ}C$.
