By using the single mode optical fiber, we fabricated Fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI). The change over a wide range in the optical path length of a FFPI is observed. The temporal movement of the interference fringes by external condition to P.Z. T) is converted to circular motion on an oscilloscope display and then recorded with a micro-computer. The two output voltages of the D/A converters are applied to X and Y terminals of oscilloscope to display circular motion on oscilloscope. Thus the direction of phase shift can be determined with observing the direction of circular motion. The variation of the optical length can be measured by calculating the angle of spot of circle with an accuracy of λ/90 wave length due to variation of temperature in this system 2.7x10-4$^{\circ}C$.
Although several techniques have been proposed to remove fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post, no safe and efficient technique has been established. Recently, a guided endodontics technique has been introduced in cases of pulp canal obliteration. This study describes 2 cases of FRC post removal from maxillary anterior teeth using this guided endodontics technique with a dental operating microscope. Optically scanned data set from plaster cast model was superimposed with the data set of cone-beam computed tomography. By implant planning software, the path of a guide drill was selected. Based on them, a customized stent was fabricated and utilized to remove the FRC post. Employing guided endodontics, the FRC post was removed quickly and safely with minimizing the loss of the remaining tooth structure. The guided endodontics was a useful option for FRC post removal.
In long-haul high speed optical communications, the distance between a transmitter and a receiver depends on the amount of light coupled to a single mode optical fiber from the laser diode(LD) as well as the LD characteristic itself. And the transmitter module must have long lifetime. high reliability, and even simple structure. Such points have induced laser welding technique to be a first choice in opto-electronic module packaging because it can provide strong weld joint in a short time with very small coupling loss. In this paper, packaging considerations and characteristics for high speed LD modules are discussed. They include optical path design factors for larger aligning tolerance, and novel laser welding processes for component assembly. For low coupling loss after laser welding processes, the optical path for optimum coupling of a single mode optical fiber into the LD chip was designed with the GRIN lens system providing sufficiently large aligning tolerance both in the radial and axial directions. The measured sensitivity of the LD module was better than -33.7dBm(back to back) at a BER of $10^{-10}$ with a 2.5Gbps NRZ $2^{23}-1$ PRBS.
Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are the most compact and reliable method of suppressing atmospheric emission lines in the infrared for ground-based telescopes. It has been proved that real FBGs based filters were able to eliminate 63 bright sky lines with minimal interline losses in 2011 (GNOSIS). Inscribing FBGs on multi-core fibers offers advantages. Compared to arrays of individual SMFs, the multi-core fiber Bragg grating (MCFBG) is greatly reduced in size, resistant to damage, simple to fabricate, and easy to taper into a photonics lantern (PRAXIS). Multi-mode fibers should be used and the number of modes has to be large enough to capture a sufficient amount of light from the telescope. However, the fiber Bragg gratings can only be inscribed in the single-mode fiber. A photonic lantern bi-directionally converts multi-mode to single-mode. The number of cores in MCFBGs corresponds to the mode. For a writing system consisting of a single ultra-violet (UV) laser and phase mask, the standard writing method is insufficient to produce uniform MCFBGs due to the spatial variations of the field at each core within the fiber. Most significant technical challenges are consequences of the side-on illumination of the fiber. Firstly, the fiber cladding acts as a cylindrical lens, narrowing the incident beam as it passes through the air-cladding interface. Consequently, cores receive reduced or zero illumination, while the focusing induces variations in the power at those that are exposed. The second effect is the shadowing of the furthest cores by the cores nearest to the light source. Due to a higher refractive index of cores than the cladding, diffraction occurs at each core-cladding interface as well as cores absorb the light. As a result, any core that is located directly behind another in the beam path is underexposed or exposed to a distorted interference pattern from what phase mask originally generates. Technologies are discussed to overcome the problems and recent experimental results are presented as well as simulation results.
The effects of fiber composition factors of 14 geotextiles which are thickness, porosity, fiber length and diameter etc. on the transmissivity were examined and in-plane permeability of geotextiles under thickness change, transmissivity, confined load were analyzed by the constitutive equations. And the effects of laminar structure on the permittivity of laminar geotextile composites which were manufactured with fiber packing densities were assessed. Transmissivities were increased with thickness of geotextiles and in-plane permeability coefficients were increased with porosity and fiber diameter. The effects of porosity were decreased with normal stress and slightly increased with fiber length. Transmissivities were increased with fiber diameter and showed same tendensy for the same fiber length. Permittivities of laminar geotextile composites were influenced by the waterhead loss in the inner interface and the connection shape of these composites to water path was interpreted as bell mouth type or soft flux pipe type.

In OBS (Optical Burst Switching) networks which decouple the burst from its header, the fault of a fiber link can lead to the failure of all the light-path that traverses the fiber. Because each light-path is expected to operate at a rate of a few Gbps by using WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology, any failure may lead to large data loss. Therefore, an efficient recovery scheme must be provided. In this paper, we analyze network utilization and BCP (Burst Control Packet) loss rate according to each link failure by applying the conventional restoration schemes in OBS networks. And through these simulation results, an ASPR scheme is proposed improve the fault management scheme in terms of recovery time and throughput. Finally, We compare the performance of our proposed scheme with that of the conventional one with respect to burst loss rate, resource utilization and throughput by OPNET simulations.
This study focused on modeling the behavior of the compressive stress using the average strain and ultrasonic test results in concrete. Feed-forward backpropagation artificial neural network (ANN) models were used to compare four types of concrete mixtures with varying water cement ratio (WC), ordinary concrete (ORC) and concrete with short steel fiber-reinforcement (FRC). Sixteen (16) $150mm{\times}150mm{\times}150mm$ concrete cubes were used; each contained eighteen (18) data sets. Ultrasonic test with pitch-catch configuration was conducted at each loading state to record linear and nonlinear test response with multiple step loads. Statistical Spearman's rank correlation was used to reduce the input parameters. Different types of concrete produced similar top five input parameters that had high correlation to compressive stress: average strain (${\varepsilon}$), fundamental harmonic amplitude (A1), $2^{nd}$ harmonic amplitude (A2), $3^{rd}$ harmonic amplitude (A3), and peak to peak amplitude (PPA). Twenty-eight ANN models were trained, validated and tested. A model was chosen for each WC with the highest Pearson correlation coefficient (R) in testing, and the soundness of the behavior for the input parameters in relation to the compressive stress. The ANN model showed increasing WC produced delayed response to stress at initial stages, abruptly responding after 40%. This was due to the presence of more voids for high water cement ratio that activated Contact Acoustic Nonlinearity (CAN) at the latter stage of the loading path. FRC showed slow response to stress than ORC, indicating the resistance of short steel fiber that delayed stress increase against the loading path.

In this paper, we numerically investigated the optimum pump light power best compensating for pulse distortion due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) as a function of channel input power in 8 channel ${\times}$ 40 Gbps wavelength division multiplexing (WDM systems. Also we investigated the allowable maximum channel input power dependence on modulation format and fiber dispersion coefficient in the various pump light power of OPC. The considered WDM transmission system is based on path-averaged intensity approximation (PAIA) mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) compensation method, which has highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNL-SDF) as nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator (OPC) in the mid-way of total transmission line. We confirmed that optimal pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC depend on modulation format, initial channel input power, total transmission length and fiber dispersion. But optimal pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC must be selected to make power conversion ratio to almost unity. And we confirmed that, if we allow a 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP), the tolerable maximum channel input power is increased by using RZ than NRZ as modulation format when pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC is not optimal value but another values.

This paper discusses experimental results obtained by the potentiality of cross-correlation function as a tool for analyzing propagation of wave in an aluminum and a woven glass fiber composite. Each propagated wave has its own characteristic time delay, and examination of the cross-correlation of input and output signal give the most proper wave velocity and significant path. Using the above distinctive features, we observed the propagation velocity for the aluminum alloy and a woven glass fiber composite more acurately and easily then the common methods. The fiber locations of this composite also determined by the basis of these results.
A highly sensitive optical-fiber humidity sensor is demonstrated in this paper. By using Nafion-PVA sol-gel and single-mode optical fibers, the Fabry-Perot humidity sensor is easily fabricated. In the humidity range of 29%-72%, humidity-response experiments are carried out with a cycle of rising and falling humidity to investigate humidity-response characteristics. The experimental results show 2.25 nm/%RH sensitivity and a 0.9997 linear correlation coefficient, with good consistency. The changes in optical-path difference (OPD) and free spectral range (FSR) with humidity are also discussed. The humidity sensitivities of a typical sensor are 80.3 nm/%RH (OPD) and 0.03 nm/%RH (FSR). Furthermore, many humidity sensors with different Nafion-PVA sol-gel concentration and initial cavity length are experimentally investigated for humidity response. The results show that the sensitivity increases with higher Nafion ratio of the Nafion-PVA sol-gel. The influence of changing cavity length on sensitivity is not obvious. These results are helpful to research on optical-fiber humidity sensors with good performance, easy fabrication, and low cost.
