Brillouin scattering-based fiber optic sensors are useful to measure strain or temperature in a distributed manner. Since the Brillouin frequency of an optical fiber depends on both the strain and temperature, it is very important to know whether the Brillouin frequency shift is caused by the strain change or temperature change. This article presents a temperature compensation technique of a Brillouin scattering-based fiber optic strain sensor. Both the changes of the Brillouin frequency and the Brillouin gain power is observed for the temperature compensation using a BOTDA sensor system. Experimental results showed that the temperature compensated strain values were highly consistent with actual strain values.
In this study, we have fabricated a fiber-optic pH sensor which is composed of a light source, plastic optical fibers and a spectrometer. As an indicator, a phenol red is used, and a pH liquid solution is prepared by mixing of phenol red and various kinds of pH buffer solutions in these experiments. The emitting light from a light source is guided by plastic optical fibers to the pH liquid solution, and the optical characteristic of a light is changed in the pH liquid solution according to its color change. Therefore, we have measured the intensities and wavelength shifts of the modulated lights, which are changed due to the color variations of phenol red at different pH values, by using of a spectrometer for spectral analysis. Also, the relationships between the pH values of liquid solutions and the optical properties of modulated light according to the change of color of phenol red are obtained.

In order to comprise a basic closed-loop control system for hydraulic systems it is necessary to detect the piston rod stroke of a hydraulic cylinder. There are many conventional type sensors which can detect the displacement of cylinders. However, they cannot reveal the original performance normally or they cannot be applied at all where the operating circumstance of cylinders is beyond specifications of sensors. Especially, for the purpose of detecting the strokes of cylinders mounted on heavy equipments, a special exclusive sensor must be used because the operating circumstances of heavy equipments are so severe that general purpose sensors cannot endure such circumstance as shock and a residual vibration induced by rough works. In this paper, an exclusive method for detecting the piston rod stroke for heavy equipments is suggested, which adopts a remote detecting technique using optical fiber sensors. Several experiments using the prototype are executed for verifying the effectiveness of the suggested method and the possibility of the accurate detection of stroke.
We propose a transverse load sensor with reconfigurable measurement accuracy based on a microwave photonic filter in the $K_u$ band, incorporating a polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg grating. A prototype sensor with a reconfigurable measurement accuracy tuning range from 6.09 to 9.56 GHz/(N/mm), and corresponding minimal detectable load range from 0.0167 to 0.0263 N/mm, is experimentally demonstrated. The results illustrate that up to 40% manufacturing error in the grating length can be dynamically calibrated to the same corresponding measurement accuracy for the proposed transverse load sensor, by controlling the semiconductor optical amplifier's injection current in the range of 154 to 419 mA.
In this study, we developed a counting method for non-contact ID cards using an optical fiber displacement sensor instead of the traditionally used friction counting method. The proposed method has the advantage of high speed and automated measurement. For counting non-contact ID cards, an H-type optical fiber sensor, jig part, and counting program are developed separately to build the system and adjust it. Through the experimental test results, it was confirmed that counting is possible with one type of international ID card and one type of financial security card based on ISO7810. Furthermore, by applying the proposed method to 100 ID cards 100 times repeatedly, it was confirmed that it has high accuracy and an error ratio of 0%. We experimentally demonstrated that the proposed counting method for non-contact ID cards using an optical fiber displacement sensor can perform measurements with high accuracy and high speed.
Novel breakthrough random-hole optical fibers (RHOFs) are fabricated in a draw tower facility, by tapering an optical fiber preform packed with a silica powder mixture capable of producing air holes in situ at the high temperature of tens of hundreds in degrees Celsius. Structural and propagation characteristics of the porous RHOF are explained briefly. Experimental investigations of the invented RHOF are performed for pressure sensor applications. Remarkable results are obtained for the RHOF with desirable pressure sensitivity independent of temperature, as is required for harsh conditions as in oil reservoirs.

In this paper, in order to analyze property of frequency response in microphone using optical sensor, acousto-optic sensor system has been implemented. The capacitance microphone and fiber-optic transmission path type fiber-optic microphone (FOM) have weaknesses in directivity, size, weight, and price. However suggested optical microphone can be constituted by cheap devices, so it has many benefits like small size, light weight, high directivity, etc. Head part of optical microphone which is suggested in this paper is movable back and forth by sound pressure with the attached reflection plate. Operating point has also been determined by measuring the response characteristics. The choosing the point, which has maximum linearity and sensitivity has changing the distance between optical head and vibrating plate. We measured the output of the O/E transformed signal of the optical microphone while frequency of sound signal is changed using sound measurement /analysis program, "Smaart Live" and "USBPre", which are based on PC, and compared the result from an existing capacitance microphone. The measured optical microphone showed almost similar output characteristics as those of the compared condenser microphone, and its bandwidth performance was about 4 kHz at up to 3 dB.

This study reports a fiber-optic sensor detecting biomolecule by simultaneously monitoring localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) of ca. $50{\pm}5$ nm attached on one end of optical fiber and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the reporter molecules adsorbed on the gold surfaces as an additional sensing tool. The sensor was fabricated by immobilizing Au NPs on one end of an optical fiber by chemical reaction. LSPR and SERS signals of the sensor were measured using various refractive indices solutions. Finally, the sensor was applied to observe real-time LSPR sensor-gram and SERS spectra of the reporter molecule of 4-aminothiphenol during the antibody-antigen reaction of interferon-gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$) as a proof-concept experiment of biological applications.
