  • In RC beams strengthened with Epoxy-Bonded Fiber, debonding failure happens frequently. Moreover, through the life cycle, it is difficult to recognize clacks and deflections on the surface of concrete members strengthened with Epoxy- Bonded Fiber. For these reasons, we must always monitor the state of RC beams. The Optical FBG sensor is broadly accepted as a structural health monitoring device. The main objective of this paper is that it's possible to monitoring the debonding failure of R.C. beams strengthened with Epoxy-Bonded Fiber. For that, we fixed two Optical FBG sensors at the center of the beam and another two sensors in the end of Epoxy-Bonded Fiber, According to the comparison micro-strain between embeded sensor in concrete and that on the fiber surface, we can find the point which debonding failure occurs

  • Fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor was developed to be able to detect intrusion effect through several ten kilometer optical fiber. Fiber optic BOTDA sensor was constructed with 1 laser diode and 2 electro-optic modulators. The intrusion detection experiment was peformed by the strain inducing set-up installed on an optical table to simulating an intrusion effect. In the result of this experiment, the intrusion effect was well detected as the distance resolution of 3 m through the fiber length of about 4.81 km during 1.5 seconds.

  • In this study, a novel gas sensor based on evanescent field coupling between single mode side polished fiber and solvatochromic dye dispersed polymer waveguide was demonstrated. We fabricated a side polished optical fiber device as a volatile organic compounds gas detector. Solvatochromic dye was coated on the top of the side polished optical fiber to take advantage of evanescent field coupling. The solvatochromism can be defined as the phenomenon whereby a compound changes color, either by a change in the absorption or emission spectra of molecule, when reacted in different VOCs. The device reacted to polarity gases like a hexane, butane, xylene etc. The resonance wavelength was shifted by the xylene concentration which range was 0.1 ppm ~ 100 ppm. Also, the response with the concentration was lineer and the detection limit was 0.1 ppb.

  • This paper measures the hot spot temperatures in a single-phase, 154 kV, 15/20 MVA power transformer filled with natural ester fluid using optical fiber sensors and compares them with those calculated by conventional heat run tests. A total of 14 optical fiber sensors were installed on the high-voltage and low-voltage windings to measure the hot spot temperatures. In addition, three thermocouples were installed in the transformer to measure the temperature distribution during the heat run tests. In the low-voltage winding, the hot spot temperature was $108.4^{\circ}C$, calculated by the conventional heat run test. However, the hot spot temperature measured using the optical fiber sensor was $129.4^{\circ}C$ between turns 2 and 3 on the upper side of the low-voltage winding. Therefore, the hot spot temperature of the low-voltage winding measured using the optical fiber sensor was $21.0^{\circ}C$ higher than that calculated by the conventional heat run test.

  • This study is an application field by using optical fiber. The system to measure sBs from optical fiber is designed, So it can be used as a temperature sensor. by using frequency shift, resulting from temperature changes. the frequency shift is checked by changing temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $69^{\circ}C$ with chamber in the laboratory and using 40Km optical fiber. It's also measured by varying the length of optical fiber The program to do the real-time monitoring and analyze the measured data is created to find accurate frequency. It can be used as an optical fiber sensor, which is capable of measuring temperature and distance by using sBs.

  • To detect external vibration signals on the latticed fence structure, distributed fiber optic sensor using Sagnac interferometer was fabricated and tested. The latticed structure fabricated with dimension of 170cm in width and 180cm in height, the optical fiber, 50m in length, distributed and fixed on the latticed structure. It was verified the sensitivity of the Sagnac interferometer using the PZT phase modulator. Fiber optic external vibration signal spplied to the latticed fence structure from 100Hz to several kHz. The interferometeric fiber optic sensor detected the excited vibration signal very effectively without any signal processing. The detected optical signals were compared and analyzed to the detected acclerometer signals.

  • A high sensitivity fiber optic temperature sensor based on a side-polished fiber (SPF) coupled to a tapered multimode overlay waveguide (MMOW) is proposed and studied. Both tapered and non-tapered MMOW were considered to study the effect of tapering of MMOW on the characteristics of the device and to investigate the criticality of the uniformity of the multimode overlay waveguide over the SPF. Present study shows that tapering of the MMOW can be used to tune the desired wavelength range without any loss in the sensitivity. Sensitivity up to 9 nm/$^{\circ}C$ within the temperature range of 25 to $100^{\circ}C$ can be achieved with the proposed sensor, almost 6 times higher compared even to state-of-the-art high-sensitivity grating-based fiber optic temperature sensors.

The latticed structure fabricated with dimension of 180 cm wide and 180 cm high, the optical fiber, 50 m in length, distributed and fixed on the latticed structure. Single mode fiber, a laser with 1,550 m wavelength, and $3{\times}3$ coupler were used. Excited vibration signal applied to the latticed structure from 200 Hz to 1 KHz. The detected optical signals were compared to the detected acceleration signals and analyzed on the time and frequency domain. Based on the experimental results, fiber optic sensor using Sagnac interferometer detected exciting frequency, effectively. This system can be applied to the structural health monitoring system.

  • A novel fiber-optic sensor system is suggested in which fiber Bragg grating sensors are demodulated by a wavelength-sweeping fiber laser source and a spectrometer. The spectrometer consists of a diffraction grating and a 512-pixel photo-diode array. The reflected Bragg wavelength information is transformed into spatial intensity distribution on the photo-diode array. The peak locations linearly correspond to the Bragg wavelengths, regardless of the nonlinearities in the wavelength tuning mechanism of the fiber laser. The high power density of the fiber laser enables obtaining high signal-to-noise ratio outputs. The improved demodulation characteristics were experimentally demonstrated with a fiber Bragg grating sensor array with 5 gratings. The sensor outputs were in much more linear fashion compared with the conventional tunable band-pass filter demodulation. Also it showed advantages in signal processing, due to the high level of photo-diode array signals, over the broadband light source system, especially in measurement of fast varying dynamic physical quantities.

  • Effect of spectral drift in coherent fiber laser was investigated by injecting optical feedback to Fabry-Perot resonance loop. Er+3 doped fiber laser having unilateral optical feedback loop in Fabry-Perot configuration using two FBGs was fabricated. The optical feedback was found to be effective in linewidth reduction of fiber laser compared to the case without any optical feedback. The linewidth of three fiber lasers using above configuration were measured to be within 3kHz which is resolution-limited performance of self-heterodyne linewidth measurement set-up. The frequency drift measurement using Mach-Zehnder measurement set-up having 200m optical delay-line in one arm showed that the frequency drift rate of optical feedback fiber laser was measured as 300kHz/sec which was better than the case without optical feedback.
