광섬유센서를 이용한 고속주행 트럭의 축중 측정에 관한 연구 (Study on the High Speed WIM(Weigh-in-Motion) Measurement with Optical Fiber Sensor System)

  • In this paper, high speed fiber optic sensor weigh-in motion (WIM) system is proposed. Bragg gratings which have several advantages such as good reproducibility and good multiplicity compare to other optical fiber sensors are used for the system. Fabry-Perot filter for the signal process, which cannot be used in the high speed measurement because of the limitation in fast operation of PZT, is excluded. A new signal processing system which employs bandwidth filter is proposed and bridge type new sensor package design is also proposed. Design of the mold supporter is modified to round shape and then supporting points do not change. The data from the fiber sensors show identical and linear behavior to the axle weight. The proposed fiber optic WIM system is tested in the laboratory and experimented with actual trucks. The new concept of calibration is introduced and calculated by the experiments. The calibrated weight data show good approximations to real axial weights regardless the velocities of the truck.

다파장 광섬유 격자 레이저의 편광 제어 파장밴드 스위칭 (Polarization-Controlled Waveband Switching in a Multiwavelength Fiber Bragg Grating Laser)

  • Based on a semiconductor optical amplifier and sampled fiber Bragg gratings, polarization-controlled waveband switching in multiwavelength fiber laser is successfully demonstrated at room temperature by using high polarization selectivity of a polarization beam splitter. A multiwavelength-switching operation between eight and six laser lines with signal to noise ratio over 35 dB and wavelength spacing of ${\sim}0.8nm$ has been successfully demonstrated. The switching displacement of the proposed laser was ${\sim}7.1nm$. The intensity unevenness between different laser lines was measured to be less than 6.5 dB. The switching displacement between wavebands (groups of contiguous wavelengths), wavelength channels, and their spacings can be flexibly designed by the selected comb filters.

  • We experimentally demonstrated a novel wavelength-swept laser using a cascaded Raman gain around 1310 nm. A 1064/1310 wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) coupler and coupled fiber Bragg gratings mirrors at 1064, 1117, 1175, 1240 nm are effectively used to increase the power efficiency in a laser ring cavity with highly non-linear fiber (HNLF) of 2 km. Linear wavelength sweeping is demonstrated with the 100 Hz triangular driving signal to fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter (FFP-TF) around the 1310 nm region. The measured sweeping range and output power were 27 nm and 2.1 mW, respectively, which are suitable for optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging.

  • Thermally expanded core fiber (TEC-fiber) Bragg gratings have been fabricated and their transmission spectrums have been analyzed. The measured spectrum shows the characteristic peak splitting caused by the grating pair formed over the expanded section that has the effective index axial distribution, which could be employed for high resolution fiber sensors. An analysis on the spectrum can also give useful informations on the effective index profile of the TEC-fiber.

200-W Continuous-wave Thulium-doped All-fiber Laser at 2050 nm

  • A 200-W continuous-wave thulium-doped all-fiber laser at 2050 nm was developed with a master oscillator power amplifier configuration. For the master oscillator, a single-mode thulium-doped fiber laser was built with fiber Bragg gratings. The operating power of the oscillator was 10.1 W at a pump power of 20.9 W, and the slope efficiency was measured to be 53.0%. All emitted wavelengths of the oscillator were located between 2049.2 nm and 2049.9 nm, and no other peaks in different wavelength ranges were observed. The maximum output power of the final amplified beam was 204.6 W at a pump power of 350.4 W. The slope efficiency of the amplifier was measured to be 58.4%.

50-GHz AWG를 이용한 다중 광섬유격자 브래그 파장 계측 (50-GHz AWG Interrogation of a Multiple-FBG Temperature Sensor)

  • 96-채널 50-GHz 배열형 도파로격자를 사용하여 광섬유 브래그 격자의 브래그 파장 측정 시스템을 제작하였다. 충분히 넓은 대역폭을 갖는 광섬유격자의 브래그 파장은 변형 또는 온도의 변화에 따라 선형적으로 변화하는 것을 확인하였다. 제작된 파장 측정 시스템은 0.01 nm의 해상도를 가지며 10초 간격으로 브래그 파장을 측정한다. 12개의 직렬 연결된 아크릴레이트 재코팅된 다채널 광섬유격자들의 파장 이동을 동시에 측정하였고, 광섬유격자의 온도가 -25℃에서 85℃로 변화될 때, 파장 감도는 0.018 nm/℃에서 0.01 nm/℃까지 변화하였다.

  • 광섬유 센서 구성을 위한 장주기 광섬유 격자(Long-Period Fiber Grating, LPFG)는 코어 모드로 진행하는 빔이 위상 정합 조건(Phase Matching Condition)에 의해 특정 파장에서 클래딩 모드와 커플링이 일어나는 광소자이다. 공진 파장과 커플링의 세기는 온도, 스트레인, 주변 굴절 지수 등에 의해 민감하게 변화하는 특성을 이용하여 광섬유 센서에 넓게 응응될 수 있다 일반적으로 광섬유 격자는 광섬유 코어를 자외선에 노출시킴으로서 굴절률의 주기적인 변화가 유도되는 원리, 즉 광민감성 (Photosensitivity)에 기초를 두고 있으며 광민감성을 가진 격자제조용 광섬유 제작은 광섬유 격자 연구에 대단히 중요한 부분이다. 이 논문에서는 보론 첨가의 양에 의한 코어와 클래딩의 굴절률 차 변화와 그것에 따른 장주기 광섬유 격자의 온도 및 구부림 특성 변화를 분석하였다. 보론의 양이 증가할수록 코어와 클래딩의 굴절률 차가 줄어드는 것$(1.69{\times}10^{-4}/SCCM)$을 실험을 통해 알 수 있었고, 그로 인해 보론의 음의 온도 의존성으로 인해 장주기 광섬유 격자의 온도 의존성이 억제됨$(0.01145nm/^{\circ}C/SCCM)$을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 보론의 증가로 인해 코어와 클래딩의 굴절률차가 줄어들수록 장주기 광섬유 격자는 구부림에 더 민감함을 알 수 있었다.

  • We report on the polarization-insensitive design and fabrication of an arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG's) using sol-gel derived silica glass films formed on fused silica substrates to provide cheap and stable tools for better design. An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer with raised structure is fabricated in order to effect polarization sensitivity. Since polarization is usually not known after propagation in an optical fiber. passive WDM components such as monolithic wavelength demultiplexer have to be polarization insensitive. 광섬유 브래그 격자 센서의 변형률 감지도 (Strain Sensitivity of Fiber Optic Bragg Grating Sensor)

  • Recently, there has been considerable interest in the development of fiber-optic sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), which can be made into Ge-doped fiber's core by UV phase mask or holographic methods. A good sensitivity and small size of this sensor make it an ideal candidate for distributed sensing in smart structures or other structural monitoring applications. In this study, fiber optic Bragg grating sensor, which could be applied to measure the absolute strains, was constructed and the strain sensitivity of this sensor was investigated in order to apply to the structural health monitoring. Fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) filter has been used to detect the optical signals instead of optical spectrum analyzer. It has been convenient to determine the structural strains from the output signal of FBGs. The fiber optic Bragg grating sensor was attached on the aluminum beam near the electrical strain gage to measure the same strain. The relationship between strain and fiber signal was linearly fitted. The strain sensitivity of the fiber optic Bragg grating sensor was determined as $l.57{\mu}{\varepsilon}/{\mu}sec$ from the aluminum beam test.

Optical Delay Amplified by Chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings

  • We report a novel optical delay line that can be implemented using only optical fiber and fiber devices without the need for any bulk-optic devices such as lens, prism, and moving mirror. The dispersive property of a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is exploited to get the delay. The proposed delay line constitutes two identical CFBGs cascaded in the reverse order with one of them being strained. Analysis reveals that the small displacement or the strain applied on the CFBG is effectively amplified in the delay line by the ratio of the minimum resonant wavelength and the reflection bandwidth of the CFBG. The dispersion properties of the CFBG with and without the strain are analyzed in detail. The theoretical performance of the proposed delay line is also discussed. Applications of the proposed delay line are expected in the field of high-speed optical coherence tomograpy.
