A compressible media filtration process with synthetic fiber media was studied for combined sewer overflows (CSOs) treatment. Since the operation performance of fiber media filtration was dependent on the pattern of CSOs, the flow rate of CSOs was investigated and it was characterized by a big fluctuation. Thus, in this study, the fiber media filtration process was tested with wide range of filtration velocity. The removal efficiency was proportion to the increase in compressibility. As the filtration velocity was increased, the treatment efficiency was decreased and consequently leveled off when the velocity exceeded 750 $m^3/m^2$/d. An exponential equation was introduced to express the relationship between the removal efficiency and up-flow velocity. At columm test, six repetition of filtration and backwash cycle did not after the filtering velocity under the constant pressure condition.
Liquid filtration by membrane filters is essential for the preparation of ultrapure water in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The separation of submicrometer particles suspended in ultrapure water with a laminated fibrous membrane filter was studied numerically and experimentally in the present work. We found that an electrical double layer around a single fiber expanded to a large extent at a low ion concentration, as in ultrapure water, and deformed toward the upstream of the fiber with increasing filtration velocity. Since an increase in the electrical double-layer thickness leads to a decrease in the electrical potential gradient, particles with the same polarity as the fiber approach the fiber more easily and are captured at a high filtration velocity. Experimental results also confirmed that the collection efficiency of polystyrene latex(PSL) particles through a PTFE filter became higher as the filtration velocity increased.
The drainage was used to determine the specific filtration resistance for wood and non-wood fibers. The drainage rate is also affected by factors that can be changed on consistency, pressure drop across the mat, basis weight, additives, and viscosity. Recent development of theoretical studies in flow through porous media and filtration operation emphasize the urgent need for more accurate data for porosity and specific filtration resistance. This study was investigated to determine specific filtration resistance of Hw, Sw-BKP and Kenaf fiber by filtration experimental. Freeness levels selected were 150,250,and $350m\ell$ CSF. The average specific filtration resistance decreased as freeness increased and resistance of Sw-BKP was greater than that of Hw-BKP. The filtrate and porosity increased and specific filtration resistance decreased as particle size of fiber increased.
A water reuse system was designed for a demonstration plant by combining fiber filtration and electrolysis. A discharged dye wastewater after treated with biomedia was used in this study. It was found that an additional removal of suspended solids (SS) was feasible with 2-stage filtration while electrolysis was not effective. Also, $COD_{cr}$ and $COD_{Mn}$ were not removed with 2 -stage filtration but electrolysis resulted in about 26.9% additional removal. This indicates that electrolysis play an important role in organic removal. Removal of T-N and T-P was negligible with 1 and 2-stage fiber filtration and low-level electrolyte. However, with 2000 ppm of electrolyte, their removal efficiencies were about 83.1 and 60%, respectively, suggesting that the removal rates are well associated with the electrolyte concentrations. With high-level electrolyte, colority was removed about 82% while chlorine ions were removed only about 10%. Therefore, to treat underground water containing high-level salinity in the follow-up study, based on the results in this paper, a combined system with selection of additional unit process and reverse osmosis will be designed.
On the purpose of conform the more stringent government regulation for turbid stormwater from construction sites, the feasibility and availability of synthetic fiber placing after the conventional protection barrier were tested in this study. Initially, comparative work on the filtering performance of fiber media and conventional gravel filter was carried out, 27% higher filtration capacity was obtained under the similar operational conditions. The filter efficiency was about 20 to 52% with a varying filter depth of 5 to 15cm, presuming at extreme storm flow conditions (800-1500 m/day of filtration rates). Fiber filter was found to have a similar filtration prosperity as grain media; namely, the separation efficiency is directly and inversely proportional to filter depth and rate, respectively. The effects of filter aid (polyaluminium chloride) on filter performance was also investigated, it greatly affected the turbidity reduction at the dosage of 2 mg/L. At the time of breakthrough, a simple filter washing was carried out, herein, the solid recovery achieved over than 88% and greatly determined by operational parameters. Based on the operational data, the empirical models aimed for predicting filtration efficiency were established, which can effectively determine the required filter depth and filtration area in field.

A metal fiber bed has seldom been applied to the practical filtration process despite its excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The filter-bed used in this work was highly porous with open structure, of which apparent porosity was 80 ∼ 90%. Although pressure loss across the filter-bed was very low, separation efficiency was found to be quite high. This paper focuses on the basic filtration mechanisms of a metal filter-bed and a thin ceramic filter from fly ash for reference. The experimental parameters were face velocity, dust loading and porosity of filter-bed. Pressure drop increased with increasing face velocity and dust feeding load for both filters. It also showed that dust particles deposited in the deep flow path, finally resulting in clogging the pore channels. It thereby indicates that the dominating mechanism of the metal filter-bed would be depth filtration. Meanwhile, the thin fly ash composite filters trapped the aerated dust mainly on the surface of the filter medium, so that the instantaneously formed dust layer might cause a steep increase of pressure drop across the filtration system.
This paper reports that the installation of a carbon fiber ionizer in front of an activated carbon fiber(ACF) filter enhanced the antibacterial efficiency. In addition, the effect of the ionizer on the filtration of bioaerosols is reported. Negative air ions from the ionizer were used as antibacterial agent. The test bacteria(Escherichia coli) were aerosolized using an atomizer and were deposited on the ACF filter media for 10 minutes. E. coli deposited on the filter were exposed to negative air ions for 0, 1, 5 and 10 minutes. Then they were separated from the ACF filter by shaking incubation with nutrient broth for 4 hours. The separated E. coli were spread on nutrient agar plates and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1~3 days. The antibacterial efficiency of E. coli was measured using a colony counting method. The antibacterial efficiencies of E. coli exposed to negative air ions for 1, 5 and 10 minutes were 14%, 48% and 71%, respectively. The filtration efficiency was evaluated by measuring the number concentration of bioaerosols at the upstream and downstream of the filter media. The increase of filtration efficiency by air ions was 14%, that is similar to the 17% filtration efficiency by none air ions. The ozone concentration was below the detection limit (under 0.01ppm) when the carbon fiber ionizers were on.

A flexile fiber filter developed in Korea was operated to evaluate the effect of packing density and filtration velocity on particle removal. The pilot-scale fiber filter with 40 cm of diameter and 2 m of height was packed with polyamide fibers of which mean diameter was approximately 0.93 mm. While the filtration velocity was maintained at 325 m/hr, the particle removal efficiency was compared with various of packing density from $70kg/m^3\;to\;100kg/m^3$. On the contrary, when the packing density was maintained at $70kg/m^3$, the particle removal efficiency was examined with various filtration velocity from 65 m/hr to 400 m/hr. The filtration pressure increased with the packing-density increase. Below $80kg/m^3$ of packing density, the removal efficiencies of turbidity ad SS were less than 30% and 50%, respectively. At $100kg/m^3$ of packing density, the removal efficiencies of them were nearly 45% and 60% respectively. The filtration pressure increased with the filtration-velocity increase. A better removal efficiency was obtained at a lower filtration velocity, removal efficiency of them were 73% at 65 m/hr. Consequently, The filtration velocity was the more important factor to enhance the particle removal efficiency compared with the packing density in fiber filter.

There is a possibility of the production of the air bubbles in membrane pores due to the reduction in pressure during membrane filtration. The effect of fine air bubbles from dissolved gases on microfiltration was investigated in the submerged membrane bio-reactor (SMBR). The $R_{air}$ (air bubble resistance) was defined as the filtration resistance due to the air bubbles formed from the gasification of dissolved gases. From the results of filtration tests using pure water with changes in the dissolved oxygen concentration, the air bubbles from dissolved gases were confirmed to act as a foulant and; thus, increase the filtration resistance. The standard pore blocking and cake filtration models, SPBM and CFM, respectively, were applied to investigate the mechanism of air bubble fouling on a hollow fiber membrane. However, the application of the SPBM and CFM were limited in explaining the mechanism due to the properties of air bubble. With a simple comparison of the different filtration resistances, the $R_{air}$ portion was below 1% of the total filtration resistance during sludge filtration. Therefore, the air bubbles from dissolved gases would only be a minor foulant in the SMBR. However, under the conditions of a high gasification rate from dissolved gases, the effect of air bubble fouling should be considered in microfiltration.
Laboratory study was undertaken to pursue the filter performance of a micro-filter module employing highly porous fiber media under a high filtration rate (over 1,500 m/day), faster than that of any conventional filter process. The effects of filtration rate, head loss, raw water turbidity, and filter aid chemicals on filter performance were analyzed. In spite of the extremely high filtration rate, the filter achieved an attractive efficiency, reducing the raw water turbidity by over 80%. As with other filter systems, the filter aid used (PAC in this study) greatly affected the performance of this particular fiber filter. Long term repetitive runs were additionally carried out to confirm the reproducibility of the filter performance. Finally, a comparison was carried out with other high rate filter systems which are either being tested for use in experimental studies, or are already commercially available.
