  • A study on the dynamic mechanical properties of the high strength carbon fiber epoxy composite beam was carried out. The macromechanical model was used for the theoretical analysis of the symmetric laminated composite beam. The anisotropic plate theory and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory were used to predict the effective flexural elastic modulus and the specific damping capacity of laminated composite beam. The free flexural vibration and torsional vibration tests were carried out to determine the specific damping capacities of the unidirectional laminated composite beam. The vibration tests were performed in a vacuum chamber with laser vibrometer system and electromagnetic hammer to obtain accurate experimental data. From the computational and experimental results, it was found that the theoretical values with the macromechanical analysis and the experimental data of symmetric laminated composite beam were in good agreement.

  • Fiber waviness is one of manufacturing defects encountered frequently in thick composite structures. It affects significantly on the behavior as well as strength of thick composites. The effects of fiber waviness on tensile/compressive nonlinear elastic behavior and strength of thick composite with fiber waviness are studied theoretically and experimentally. FEA(Finite Element Analysis) models are proposed to predict tensile/compressive nonlinear behavior and strength of thick composites. In the FEA models, both material and geometric nonlinearities were incorporated into the model using energy density, iterative mapping and incremental method. Also Tsai-Wu criteria was adopted to predict the strength of thick composites with fiber waviness. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted on the specimens with uniform fiber waviness. It was observed that the degree of fiber waviness in composites significantly affected the nonlinear behavior and strength of the composites

  • In this study, composite materials were prepared by varying the content of glass fiber and bamboo fiber in PP/glass fiber/bamboo fiber. Experiments were conducted to confirm the mechanical properties(tensile, impact and burst strength) and volatile organic compound content of the bamboo fiber composite prepared under these conditions. An improvement in the main properties was observed at a fiber content of 30wt%. When the fiber fraction was increased above 30wt%, the mechanical properties tended to decrease due to the agglomeration of fibers at higher load fractions. In addition, the content of volatile organic compounds increased as the content of bamboo fibers increased, which is thought to be due to the volatile organic compounds generated during the manufacturing process of the composite material being present in the composite material without escaping from the pores of the bamboo fibers and volatilizing at a certain temperature. As a result of confirming the physical properties of the composite, it is considered that the optimal mixing condition is 30wt% of bamboo fiber for the composite produced by varying the amount of bamboo fiber composite. In the future, it is thought that follow-up experiments to confirm and improve the pre-treatment conditions for reducing the content of volatile organic compounds in the manufactured composite material are possible.

  • The development of adsorbed natural gas (ANG) has emerged as one of potential solutions. It is desirable to reduce the weight of vessel by applying light-weighed a composite carbon fiber in order to response to a egulation of $CO_2$ emission. Through understanding of a composite carbon fiber, and material characteristic of a composite carbon fiber is required in order for better application of a reduction of weight and an analysis of material characteristic. Herein, this study suggest the composite carbon fiber vessel applied to the characteristic of carbon fiber, and it decides the preliminary shape based on the test of material characteristic for ANG vessel applied to a composite carbon fiber, and its basic shape calculate through on the netting theory. Moreover, the detail shape design is analyzed by a finite element analysis, and in the stage of detail sahp design and analysis of stress was performed on the typical shape using a finite element analysis, and the result of preliminary design was verified.

  • Cure monitoring and nondestructive characteristics of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were evaluated by the measurements of electrical resistance and acoustic emission (AE). Logarithmic electrical resistivity of the untreated single-carbon fiber composite increased suddenly to infinity when the fiber fracture occurred, whereas that of the electrodeposited composite increased relatively broadly up to infinity. As curing temperature increased. logarithmic electrical resistivity of steel fiber increased. On the other hand, electrical resistance of carbon fiber decreased due to the intrinsic electrical properties based on the band theory. The apparent modulus of the electrodeposited composite was higher than that of the untreated composite due to the improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS).

  • The objective of this research is to develop real-time failure detection techniques for damage assessment of composite materials using optical fiber sensors. Signals from matrix cracking or fiber fracture in composite laminates are treated by signal processing unit in real-time. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) to determine the time of occurrence of failure. In order to verify the performance of the optical fiber sensor for stress wave detection, we performed pencil break test with EFPI sensor and compared it with that of PZT. The EFPI sensor was embedded in composite beam to sense the failure signals and a tensile test was performed. The signals of the fiber optic sensor when damage occurred were characterized using STFT and wavelet transform. Failure detection system detected the moment of failure accurately and showed good sensitivity with the infinitesimal failure signal.

  • The application of short, fiber-reinforced polymer composite pipes has been increasing rapidly. A comprehensive review of the prior research reveals that the majority of the previously-reported studies have been conducted on the filament-wound composite pipes, and fewer studies have been reported on the mechanical behavior of short, randomly-oriented fiber composite pipes. On this basis, the main objective of this research endeavor is to investigate the mechanical behavior and failure modes of short, randomly-oriented glass-fiber composite pipes under three-point bending tests. To this end, an experimental study is performed in order to explore the load-bearing capacity, failure mechanism, and deformation performance of such pipes. Fourteen properly-instrumented composite pipe specimens with different diameters, thicknesses, lengths, and nominal pressures have been tested and also simulated using the finite element approach for verification purposes. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the diameter-to-thickness ratio, length-to-diameter ratio, and nominal pressure on the mechanical behavior and deformation performance of short, randomly-oriented glass-fiber composite pipes.

  • A study on the method that can measure the internal strain of composite materials is performed to monitor the health status of composite structures. A fiber optic sensor was constructed using the total reflected extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer(TR-EFPI) probe with a broadband light source. Result obtained from electrical strain gage adhered on the aluminum beam specimen was compared with that from the fiber optic TR-EFPI sensor and showed a good agreement. It was found that fiber optic TR-EFPI sensor system was adequate for monitoring the strain and thus failure processes in the interior of composite materials.

  • Atmospheric pressure air plasma was applied for treatment of different kinds of natural bamboo fiber to improve their mechanical properties and surface characteristics, which are suitable for adhesion and dyeing. The tensile strength and Young modulus of bamboo fiber were significantly improved; SEM and AFM study show that the surface of fiber became cleaner and rougher after plasma treatment. Plasma treatment caused the cracking, removing of the protective skin of alkali-untreated fiber and etching to form a cleaner and rougher surface. The dyeability of both groups of bamboo fiber which are used for composite and textile purposes is significantly enhanced after treatment.
