  • For Near-field Scanning Optical Microscopy measurements, the fiber tip is glued on the side of one of the tuning fork prongs vertically to its extended direction. Higher Q-factor is attainable in this geometry than in the arrangement with the fiber tip parallel to the prong. A simple mechanical design is applied to hold the fiber tip above the gluing point. The overall tuning fork-fiber tip assembly gives another advantage of the flexible Q-factor enhancement. With this treatment, Q-factor higher than 3000 is easily achievable. As an operating instance, a grating is scanned for its one dimensional topographical image.

  • Currently, various optical fiber tips are used to deliver laser beam for endoscopic surgery. In this paper, we demonstrated multidirectional (forward and side) firing optical fiber tip using a femtosecond micromachining and $CO_2$ laser polishing technology. We controlled the edge width of optical fiber tip, by modulating the condition of $CO_2$ laser, to regulate the amount of side and forward emission. The distal end of the optical fiber with core/clad diameter of $400/440{\mu}m$ was microstructured with cone shape by using a femtosecond laser. And then the microstructured optical fiber tip was polished by $CO_2$ laser beam result in smoothing and specular reflection at the surface of the cone structure. Finally, we operated the LightTools simulation and good agreement was generally found between the proposed model and experimental simulation.

  • In this paper, controlling shape of optical fiber tip for endoscope was investigated for eliminating blind spot. The blind spot of endoscope is generated by divergence angle of optical fiber, so it is easy to generate blind spot when tightly focusing. In order to eliminate this region, fiber tip is necessary to be controlled as convex or concave. Illumination simulation of convex and concave type of fiber tip in the endoscope was in progress, so the distance of non- blind region was investigated in each case. As well as the simulation, the tip was fabricated as concave shape by UV laser machining. Then the beam radiation was measured to observe the blind region. The result showed that controlling the fiber tip as convex or concave shape makes the narrow blind region of illumination in endoscope.

  • We have fabricated a down tapered polymer tip on optical fiber end-face by a guided UV light. One side of fiber was aligned with a mercury-xenon lamp and another was put into UV curable polymer. A shape of tip was controlled by adjusting an irradiance of lamp and time of exposure. A bending effect also affects the result. Optical characteristic was achieved preliminarily with solution of minute particles.

  • In this paper, using the value theoretically calculated to emit multidirectionally a beam coming into an optical fiber with diameter of $125{\mu}m$, we modeled and produced a cone-shaped structure at the distal end of the fiber. A numerical simulation was performed for an optical fiber tip in which all incident beams were totally reflected and emitted toward the side, as well as for an optical fiber tip from which the beams could be emitted forward and sideways simultaneously. We produced multidirectional-firing optical fiber tips based on the simulation result and model. Laser fabrication of the optical fiber was done by processing a cone-shaped structure at the distal end of an optical fiber with diameter of $125{\mu}m$ using a femtosecond pulsed laser and polishing the processed surface with a $CO_2$ laser. We also conducted an analysis to compare experimental and simulation results.

  • In this paper, the multi-point hydrogen detection system based on the combination of the hetero-core optical fiber SPR hydrogen tip sensor and interrogator by pseudorandom noise (PN) code correlation reflectometry has been developed. In a light intensity-based experiment with an LED operating at 850 nm, it has been presented that a transmitted loss change of 0.32dB was induced with a response time of 25 s for 4% $H_2$ in $N_2$ in the case of the 25-nm Au, 60-nm $Ta_2O_5$, and 5-nm Pd multi-layers film. The proposed sensor characteristic shows excellent reproducibility in terms of loss level and time response for the in- and out- $H_2$ action. In addition, in the experiment for multi-point hydrogen detection, all sensors show the real-time response for 4% hydrogen adding with reproducible working. As a result, the real-time multi-point hydrogen detection could be realized by means of the combination of interrogating system and hetero-core optical fiber SPR hydrogen tip sensors.

  • Thermal expanded core (TEC) fiber can reduce, being advantaged from thermal diffusion technology, connection loss by expanding the tolerance in relation to axial offset and gap when making optical connection having mode field diameter (MFD) of optical fiber expanded locally. In this paper, TEC fiber fabrication system based on the frame brushing techniques using twin-torch tip was designed and developed in order to maintain a stable thermal diffusion and single-mode when manufacturing TEC fiber. We were able to obtain that varied kinds of TEC fibers of which MFD could have been extended between $20\;{\mu}m$ and $40\;{\mu}m$ by TEC fiber fabrication system. In addition, the characteristic of connection loss was measured by alignment two TEC fibers of which MFD was $30\;{\mu}m$.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the push-out bond strengths of resin cement/fiber post systems to post space dentin using different application methods of resin cement. Materials and Methods: Thirty extracted human premolars were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups according to the technique used to place the cement into root canal: using lentulo-spiral instrument (group Lentulo), applying the cement onto the post surface (group Direct), and injecting the material using a specific elongation tip (group Elongation tip). After shaping and filling of the root canal, post space was drilled using Rely-X post drill. Rely-X fiber post was seated using Rely-X Unicem and resin cement was light polymerized. The root specimens were embedded in an acrylic resin and the specimens were sectioned perpendicularly to the long axis using a low-speed saw. Three slices per each root containing cross-sections of coronal, middle and apical part of the bonded fiber posts were obtained by sectioning. The push-out bond strength was measured using Universal Testing Machine. Specimens after bond failure were examined using operating microscope to evaluate the failure modes. Results: Push-out bond strengths were statistically influenced by the root regions. Group using the elongation tip showed significantly higher bond strength than other ways. Most failures occurred at the cement/dentin interface or in a mixed mode. Conclusions: The use of an elongation tip seems to reduce the number of imperfections within the selfadhesive cement interface compared to the techniques such as direct applying with the post and lentulospiral technique.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the shear bond strength of orthodontic buttons according to light tip distance and optic fiber diameter when an extended optic fiber was applied to the tip of a curing light unit. In this study, 315 extracted premolar teeth were divided into 3 groups. Orthodontic buttons were attached using no optic fibers (Group I), 3.0 mm diameter optic fibers (Group II), or 5.0 mm diameter optic fibers (Group III). Each group was divided into subgroups A - C (5.0, 10.0, and 15.0 mm light tip distance), respectively. Shear bond strength was then measured while varying the light tip distance. In group I, shear bond strength significantly decreased as the light tip distance increased. When the shear bond strength was evaluated according to the optic fiber diameter, no statistical significance was observed in group of 5.0 mm light tip distance. Compared with group IB, group IIIB showed significantly greater shear bond strength. Compared with group IC, all groups using 3.0 or 5.0 mm diameter optic fibers showed significantly greater shear bond strength. Therefore, when a curing light unit has poor accessibility, optic fibers with a large diameter should be considered.
