  • Hot stretching focused on the improvement of properties of poly(L-lactic acid) fiber. Some aliphatic polyesters are biodegradable under microbial attack and the new unique applications are expected. Generally, these materials have a somewhat low melting temperature and low mechanical properties compared with the aromatic polyesters. In this study, melt-spinning of poly(L-lactic acid) was conducted. We investigated effects of the stretching and the molecular orientation of aliphatic polyester fibers on the change of fine-structure. Glass transition temperature, molecular orientation and crystallinity increased according to the increase of stretching ratio.

  • In this research, damage behavior of singly oriented ply (SOP) fiber metal laminate (FML) subject to concentrated load was studied. The static indentation tests were conducted to study fiber orientation effect on damage behavior of FML. During the static indentation tests, Acoustic Emission technique (AE) was adopted to study damage characteristics of FML. AE signals were obtained by using AE sensor with 150kHz resonance frequency and the signals were compared with indentation curves of FML. As fiber orientation angle increases, the crack initiation load of SOP FML increases because the stiffness induced by fiber orientation is increased. The penetration load of SOP FML is influenced by the deformation tendency and boundary conditions. Cumulative AE counts were well predicted crack initiation and crack propagation and AE amplitude were useful for prediction of damage failure mode. During the matrix cracking, fiber debonding and fiber breakage, AE amplitude has $45{\sim}60dB,\;60{\sim}80dB\;and\;90{\sim}100dB$, respectively.

  • Fracture of uni-directional carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composite is strongly dependent on the orientation of basal plane in graphite matrix when it is limited within matrix. The orientation of basal planes are vertically stacked to carbon fiber which results in the weakness for applied tensile or shear force in thermosetting resin derived-carbon matrix composite. Microtextural control of the matrix was tried through chemical interaction between metal carbides and furan resin derived-carbon matrix. SiC and TiO2 addition made the orientation disordered. However, porosity increased due to decomposition of SiC. Interfacial bonding could be controlled by TiO2 addition, but carbon fiber was considerably reacted with TiC during thermal treatment higher than 2$600^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is desirable to control the thermal treatment temperature at which decomposition of SiC was not serious and TiC/C was not formed eutectoid.

  • Glass fiber reinforced nylon has been used in many plastic industries. Mechanical properties of reinforced plastics depend upon types of glass fiber as well as loading of glass fiber. Tensile properties of glass fiber reinforced nylon66 have been studied for different glass fiber types and sizes. Types of glass fibers were circular and flat, and diameters were 7, 10, and 13 micrometers. Orientations of glass fibers in the matrix of nylon66 have been analyzed through X-ray CT. Tensile specimens were prepared by cutting out of square plates of $100{\times}100{\times}3mm$ with different angles such as 0, 45, and $90^{\circ}$ to the flow direction. As the loading of glass fiber increases to 45 wt% tensile strength increases up 2.5 times compare with neat nylon66. Anisotropic tensile strength has been observed and minimum tensile strength was measured in the specimen cut from perpendicular to the flow direction.

  • FRP has been used very much as high strength core materials for insulators because of its high strength and good insulation properties. The fiber orientation of FRP has a great effect on FRP strength because the strength of FRP mainly depends on the strength of fiber. In this study, compression and bending stress were simulated along to the orientation of glass fiber. In addition, FRP was made by pultrusion and filament winding method. The compression and flexural strength were measured. The tendency of compression and flexural strength according to the fiber orientation of practical measured value of FRP was similar to simulated results.

  • In this research, damage initiation in singly oriented ply (SOP) FML under concentrated loading conditions was studied. The finite element method (FEM) base on the first order shear deformation theory is used for the analysis of fiber orientation effect on FML under concentrated loading conditions. The failure indices were calculated for the variation of fiber orientation and the results were compared with indentation experiments. The failure indices were well matched with damage initiation of SOP FML. Indentation results shows that the crack initiation of SOP FML is determined by stiffness induced by fiber orientation and tile penetration load of SOP FML are influenced by the deformation tendency and boundary conditions.

  • In this research, to develope the A1 7075/CFRP multilayered hybrid composites, CRALL(Carbon Reinforced aluminum lamiate) specimens were processed by autoclavecuring system that curing temperature, time, surface pretreatment condition of aluminum were constant. Andthe fatigye life and failure mechanism on CFRP volume fraction and fiber orientation of CRALLspecimens were investigated. A fatigue life was greatly influenced by effect of CFRP fiber volume fraction but it was less effected than those of fiber orientation. The fatigue failure arised from interface delamination of CFRP and aluminum sheet after shear fracture of aluminum layer. The failure mechanism is assumed that the aluminum laminates which divide the CFRP into many thim layers tend to arrest the failure propagation.

  • Due to the diversified use of recent Piezoelectric Zirconate Titanate Composite Actuate. (PZTCA), various PZTCAs with the different ply orientation of the fiber layer have been applied. For this reason, the applicable bending moment equation is necessary even though the fiber layer ply orientation and the laminate configuration are changed. The aim of this research is to evaluate the relationship between the total effective moment $(M^E)$ and Bernoulli-Euler bending moment (M) when the ply orientations of UD CFRP are changed. In conclusions, firstly, as the performance test results by the CFRP ply orientation, the performance of [0] and [90] were stable. However, while the performance of [+45] was suddenly decreased after 5 hours. Secondly, the change of $(M^E)$ by the CFRP ply orientation was evaluated. As the CFRP ply orientation was increased from [0] to [+60], the $(M^E)$ were gradually decreased. However, they became a little bit increased from [+60] to [90]. Finally, after the change of M by the CFRP ply orientation was evaluated, it was found that $M^E=2.2M$ was valid for just [0] and that there was a relationship between $M^E$ and M according to the ply orientation.

  • Basalt fiber has many advantages as a reinforcing fiber such as high tensile strength and similar density to concrete. This study investigated the bonding property and the effect of fiber orientation on tensile strength of basalt fiber. Single fiber pullout tests for basalt and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were performed to evaluate the bonding property between basalt fiber and mortar. And then tensile strength of basalt, PVA, and polyethylene (PE) fibers according to fiber orientation were measured. From the test results, it was exhibited that the chemical bond, frictional bond, and slip-hardening coefficient of basalt fiber were 1.88, 1.03, 0.24 times of PVA fibers, respectively. And the strength reduction coefficient of basalt fiber was 9 times of PVA fiber and 3 times of PE fiber.
