  • We fabricated fiber bragg gratings using interferometric method with Phase mask. The interferometer consisted of two plane-parallel mirrors and a phase mask perpendicular to mirrors. The Gratings were written using an Argon-ion laser. The experimental setup could change Bragg wavelength given by the phase mask. (omitted)

Suppression of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Optical Fiber using Sampled-Fiber Brags Grating (샘플링 광섬유 Bragg 격자를 이용한 광섬유 내의 유도 Brillouin 산란 억제)

  • I have investigated a scheme for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers. The scheme makes use of a sampled Bragg grating fabricated within the fiber used for transmitting intense Q-switched pulses. The grating is designed such that the spectrum of the Stokes pulse generated through stimulated Brillouin scattering falls entirely within its stop band. I show numerically that the number of sampled fiber Bragg gratings in 1 m is applied directly to suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering rather than the coupling coefficient. This prevents the build up of the backward-propagating Stokes wave and mitigates the deleterious effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering. The simulation shows that 15 ns pulses with 1 kW peak power can be transmitted though a 1 m-long fiber with little energy loss using this scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a new tunable laser diode structure. The laser diode consists of a sampled-grating distributed feedback laser diode monolithically integrated with a sampled-grating distributed-Brags-Reflector. For a specific design, the possibility of continuous/discrete wavelength tuning over 27nm is confirmed by a numerical analysis using a split-step time domain model. Because the laser diode can be directly coupled with optical fiber without the intervention of the passive section, the laser diode exhibits higher output power than the conventional laser diode.

  • 본 논문은 편광유지 광섬유 루프 미러를 이용한 센서 시스템의 제작과 이의 응용에 대한 것이다. 수동 검출법을 통하여 비교적 간편한 신호처리 방식을 갖는 센서 시스템을 제작하였고, Fabry-Perot 필터를 스캔하여 다중점 측정에 이용하였다. 또한 루프 미러의 온도 의존성을 이용하여 온도 센서로의 응용 가능성도 제시하였다.

New Compensation Method for Temperature Sensitivity of Fiber Brags Grating Using Bi-metal

  • A new method for temperature compensation of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) using hi-metal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Bi-metal bends toward the metal of low temperature expansion coefficient as the temperature increases, and this property is utilized to cancel the thermo-optic effect of the fiber. The optimum thickness of the high coefficient metal was empirically found by the trial-and-error method. The temperature sensitivities were 8.1 pm/$^{\circ}C$ and -0.018 pm/$^{\circ}C$ for the uncompensated and compensated FBGs, respectively, which indicates a reduction to a mere 0.22 % of the original sensitivity. No appreciable change in the spectral shape was observed. The packaging technique described in this paper is simple and compact, and it can be used for FBGs in WDM and DWDM communication systems that have stringent requirements on the temperature stability of the components.

  • Recently, the applications of composite materials become broader to civil engineering as well as mechanics and aerospace engineering. Cracks on the civil structures like bridges can cause stress concentration, which induces Peak splitting of fiber Bragg grating sensor and it makes strain measurements difficult. In this study, 4-point bending test of concrete beam with initial crack reinforced by composite patch was conducted in order to verify the effects of the stress concentration on the peak signal of FBG sensor and a novel method for signal maintenance.

  • In this research, the fiber Bragg grating sensors with long gauge for displacement measurement in the long distance is developed and tested. The sensors show an accuracy and a capability for displacement measurement oin long distance. Monitoring using static logger of system of FBG sensor with strained optical fiber shows the capability of measurement in the harsh environment such as strong wind. Measurement of long distance displacement by optical fiber sensor if use $250{\mu}m$ optical fiber and impose some strong pre-tension shows possibility in monitoring of nuclear containment structure.

  • 광섬유 브래그 격자 센서(Fiber Brags Grating Sensor: FBG Sensor)는 여타 광섬유 센서와 같이 가볍고 저렴하며 주위의 전자기적 잡음에 무관한 장점과 더불어 측정대상이 반사광의 파장변화이므로, 광섬유 연결부나 실험장치들에 의해 생기는 광 손실이나 잡음에 대해서 강인한 측정을 할 수 있다. 그리고 파장변화가 변형률이나 온도변화에 선형적으로 나타나므로, 센서로서 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 특히, 구조물의 내부에 삽입하여 구조물 스스로 외부의 환경변화를 감지하여 필요한 동작을 수행하는 지능형 구조물(Smart Structure)에 적합한데, 이를 위해선 구조물의 여러 지점을 측정해야 하므로, 브래그 격자 여러개를 한 시스템에서 사용하는 다중화(Multiplexing)가 필수적이다.   • 단주기 격자를 이용한 광섬유 레이저는 차세대 대용량 파장분할 통신과 광 CATV 방송망에 대한 DFB 반도체 레이저의 대체 광원으로 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 좁은 파장영역에 대한 선택적 반사특성을 가지는 광섬유 단주기 격자의 특성을 이용하면 간단한 구조의 고출력을 가지면서 낮은 잡음의 수백 kHz대의 짧은 주파수 폭을 가지는 광섬유 레이저를 얻을 수 있다. 또한 반도체 DFB 레이저에서는 구현하기 어려운 정밀한 파장 선택성을 가지는 광섬유 레이저를 구현할 수 있다. (중략)

  • Recently structural monitoring using fiber optic sensors became popular, but the fiber sensors are very difficult to apply to the real structure due to thin and fragile shape of the fiber. In this research, we developed the fiber sensor packages easy to attach or fasten to the structures and apply to the real bridge structure for measuring the strains and shape changes. The applied fiber optics sensors show the behavior of the bridge girders which have several cracks in the structure.
