  • Accelerometers play a key role in the structural assessment. However, the current electric type accelerometers have certain limitations to apply some structures such as heavy cabling labor, installed sea structure and sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. An optical Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) accelerometer has many advantages over conventional electrical sensors since their immunity to electromagnetic interference and their capability to transmit signals over long distance without any additional amplifiers, and there is no corrosion from sea water. In this paper, we have developed a new FBG-based accelerometer. The accelerometer consists of two cantilevered type beams and a mass and two rollers. A bragg grating element is not directly glued to a cantilever to avoid possible non-uniform strain in the element. Instead, the bragg grating element will be attached to rotation part that rolled inducing vertical movement of the mass and support cantilever beams so that the bragg grating element is uniformly tensioned to achieve a constant strain distribution. After manufacturing, we will prove the performance and the natural frequency of the accelerometer through the experiment with a vibration shaker. The FBG-based accelerometer is developed for measuring the vibration not exceeding 50 Hz for the marine and civil structures.

  • FBG sensors have been studied more actively than any other fiber optic sensor because of good multiplexing capabilities among many fiber optic sensors. The demodulation method of FBG sensors is based on the detection of wavelength shift of their sensor peaks and properties such as strain and temperature can be measured by detecting them. However, the signal stability of FBG sensors can be influenced by the strain gradient induced by structural geometry or cracks on the surface when FBG sensors are embedded into or attached on the structure. In this study, the signal characteristics of reflected spectra of FBG sensors under strain gradient were verified and the relations between the grating length of FBG sensors and the amount of strain gradient were investigated. From the experimental results, the recommended working range of FBG sensors under strain gradients was shown quantitatively with respect to grating lengths of them.

  • Fiber Brag grating sensors were written in standard Ge-doped telecom optical fiber (Corning SMF-28) using an 800nm femtosecond laser and a phase mask. It were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 100 kGy to evaluate the radiation effect. The fs-FBG-2 sensor showed incomplete optical characteristics during irradiation, but the fs-FBG-1 sensor showed excellent radiation resistance with Bragg wavelength shift(BWS) of less than 10pm at a dose of 100 kGy.

  • This research focuses on the development of an interrogator that operates and measures fiber Bragg grating(FBG) multiplexing sensor probes for accurate-measurement of the blade deflection in a wind power generator. We designed and fabricated an optical source and spectrum module for the interrogator. Additionally, we verified the wavelength repeatability within 0.001 nm and the wavelength stability within 1 pm of the optical source, and we experimentally determined that the wavelength scanning range was about 44.4 nm. The FBG sensor with 2 nm resolution can be extended to a performance-efficient system that measures more than 20 sensors. The implemented interrogator has 0.141 nm wavelength variations corresponding to an ambient temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. The measurement error can be easily reduced by employing a temperature compensation algorithm. In this study, we quantitatively confirmed the accuracy and operating stability of the interrogator.

  • Vibration and deformation sensing control of lightweight structures using optical fiber sensor technology is introduced in this presentation. This paper shows several examples of vibration control and deformation estimation for structures using these optical fiber sensor systems. Among various optical fiber sensors, in this paper, two types of optical fiber sensors, Fabry-Perot Interferometer(EFPI) and Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensors, are mainly dealt with. Fiber optic sensors show many advantages over conventional strain gages for the measurement of vibration and deformation of lightweight structures.

  • Non-destructive testing methods of composite materials are very important for improving material reliability and safety. AE measurement is based on the detection of microscopic surface movements from stress waves in a material during the fracture process. The examination of AE is a useful tool for the sensitive detection and location of active damage in polymer and composite materials. FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors have attracted much interest owing to the important advantages of optical fiber sensing. Compared to conventional electronic sensors, fiber-optical sensors are known for their high resolution and high accuracy. Furthermore, they offer important advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, and electrically passive operation. In this paper, the crack detection capability of AE (Acoustic Emission) measurement was compared with that of an FBG sensor under tensile testing and buckling test of composite materials. The AE signals of the PVDF sensor were measured and an AE signal analyzer, which had a low pass filter and a resonance filter, was designed and fabricated. Also, the wavelength variation of the FBG sensor was measured and its strain was calculated. Calculated strains were compared with those determined by finite element analysis.

  • Optical Fiber Bragg Grating sensor has a good performance to measure microscopic displacement which can measure strain of lining concrete and cylindrical structure like high intensity containment building and it can present many advantages like a corrosion resistance from the durability point of view. Then it can measure plane geometrical displacement of cylindrical structures with two-way displacement FBG sensor module. According to the test result, measurement of FBG sensor is better performance than other electric sensor system and 2D-level measurement. As a test result, Resolution of the two-way displacement sensor module with FBG sensors are more 10 times than other LVDT or 2D surveying.

  • Multiple fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have been proposed and demonstrated for gas-flow measurements in a flow channel, using the temperature-difference method. This sensor consists of two FBG temperature sensors and two coil heaters. Coil heaters are used to heat the FBGs. The flow rate of the gas can be obtained by monitoring the difference in the Bragg-wavelength shifts of the two FBGs, which has features that exclude the effect of temperature fluctuations. In this study, experiments are conducted to measure the wavelength shift based on the flow rate, and to evaluate the gas-flow rate in a gas tube. Experimental results show that the sensor has a linear characteristic over a flow-rate range from 0 to 25 ℓ/min. The measured sensitivity of the sensor is 3.2 pm/(ℓ/min) at a coil current of 120 mA.

The sensors show an accuracy and a capability for displacement measurement oin long distance. Monitoring using static logger of system of FBG sensor with strained optical fiber shows the capability of measurement in the harsh environment such as strong wind. Measurement of long distance displacement by optical fiber sensor if use $250{\mu}m$ optical fiber and impose some strong pre-tension shows possibility in monitoring of nuclear containment structure.
