  • An image analysis was used for the interpretation of microstructures of ferrous metal artifacts. For the purposes, various microstructural features such as average grain size, phase area, shape factor, and composition of the inclusions, were parameterized for the information about manufacturing techniques such as casting, heating and tempering. The carbon content was determined through the evaluation of the amount of pearlite phase. As the amount of pearlite phase increased the shape factor also increased. Grain size was relatively smaller in trans-section than in cross-section. The manufacturing direction was trans-sectional because the orientation of inclusions was elongated lengthwise. All inclusions was of silicate groups and the manufacturing temperature was estimated up to $1450^{\circ}C$.

  • First-principles calculations were carried out to investigate the effects of Al impurities on bcc Fe magnetism by considering SOC. No significant solid solution hardening effect was found. Albeit the effects of the SOC by Al on spin magnetic moments were minor, there are sizeable orbital magnetic effects. It is concluded that the orbital magnetism due to the Al impurity is strongly related with the impurity screening of the system as seen in Si impurity case [3], but the effects of Al impurity is stronger than those of Si impurity in terms of orbital magnetism.

  • The iron precipitates were prepared by adding sodium carbonate solution to ferrous chloride and ferric chloride solutions to pH=9 and pH=4.5, respectively. The thermal reaction of the iron precipitates was investigated by means of TGA, DTA and X-ray diffraction. In the former the crystallization of $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ begins at about 35$0^{\circ}C$, while in the latter at about 30$0^{\circ}C$, during the calclnation in air. In the iron precipitate from ferrous chloride solution, the activation energy for the crystallite-growth or $\alpha$-TEX>$Fe_2O_3$ in air is about 7.6$\times$104J/mole between 800 and 100$0^{\circ}C$. As the result of X-ray diffration for the reduction product of hematite, it was found that maghemite, magnetite and wustite are formed and that hematite is transformed to magnetite through maghemite.

  • The production of Secondary Non-ferrous Metals (SNM) is characterized by low investment, energy consumption and cost, less pollution as well as rather simple technology. In the past years, the SNM industry has seen relevantly rapid progress in China. Especially in the filed of clean hydrometallurgical treatment certain novel technologies for recovery and separation have successfully been elaborated, and a number of medium and small commercial plants established. On the basis of four common metals Cu, Al, Pb, Zn, and Ni, Co, this paper describes the status quo and progress of SNM industry in China, indicating that a lot of work should still be done in salvage of waste metals. It is recommended that measures for collecting and classifying SNM resource should be strengthened and the research on new technologies for scavenging such metals should be supported.

  • The generation of ferrous slag, an industrial by-product from the iron ore industry, results in serious environmental problems. The chemical compositions indicate 30-34% SiO2, 30-34% CaO, 18-22% Al2O3 and 0.5-0.6% Fe2O3. The specific gravity, moisture content and pH are in the range of 1.3-1.65, 9.1-10% and 8.5-9.0 respectively. The major part of the slag is composed of sand-size particles. The problems of disposal of slag could be minimized by considering its use in various environmental engineering applications providing additional value to the by-product. This paper mainly focuses on the potential utilization and valorisation of ferrous slag in both water and wastewater treatments. It is effective for the treatment of water and wastewater containing nutrients, heavy metals and polluted river/stormwater.

  • A simple and rapid method for preparation of standard phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxide (PCOOH) in chemiluminescence-HPLC assay (CL-HPLC) was developed using the rose bengal dependent spectrofluorometric oxidation. The concentration of obtained PCOOH was determined by FOX (ferrous oxidation-xylenol orange) assay and then subjected to a CL-HPLC system.

  • In this study, the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of alloying element substituted B2 FeAl systems have been investigated using the all-electron FLAPW method based on the GGA. It was shown that the important changes take place in the structural properties as well as in the magnetism when alloying element is substituted by Fe or Al site in B2 FeAl. Detailed discussion on the thermodynamic and magnetic properties and electronic structure of these intermetallic compounds will be given.

  • Copper infiltration is demonstrated as a viable solution to achieve higher mechanical properties by filling the interconnected porosities of a ferrous structure with copper infiltrant. This paper will present the results of a design of experiments study based on the selected processing variables in the copper infiltration process. The variables are the following: Infiltrating temperatures, infiltrating time at pre-heat zone and hot zone, the green density of iron part, the migration of copper into the iron part at different processing conditions. The results show the flexibility of the infiltration process to attain certain mechanical properties by changing the processing conditions.

  • In this study, the magnetism and the elastic properties of Fe-Si alloys have been investigated using the all-electron FLAPW method based on the GGA. The local magnetic moment of Fe atoms decreases gradually. From the Pugh's relation and $C_P$, in the ordered $D0_3$ $Fe_3Si$, we predict that it presents intrinsic ductility.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the physiological characteristics of isolated bacteria, Ferrobacillus ferooxidans from copper mine water in Korea. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The optimum pH range for the growth of these bacteria was 2.0-3.0 and optimum temperature was $20^{\circ}C$-$30^{\circ}C$. 2. The oxidation curves of ferrous iron to the ferric iron ran parallel with the growth curves. 3. The optimum nitrogen concentration was 400-800 ppm and the minimal flow rate of air for the maximal growth of the bactria was 70 ml air/min./200ml medium. 4. The growth of these bacteria was inhibited by the absence of ferrous iron and by the addition of sulfur. 5. Ferrous iron at a concentration of 9000 ppm, appeared to be optimum for the most rapid growth of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans.
