Stainless steels have been widely used as a building exterior materials in Asian countries for the last decade. It is required for the materials in this field to have an aesthetic appearance, a relatively high strength, and an excellent corrosion resistance. Other metallic materials such as copper, aluminum, and carbon steels have been also used as the exterior materials. Considering the cost of maintenance, stainless steel, having the outstanding corrosion resistance, is replacing other materials in the several parts in the building exteriors. Ferritic stainless steel has been applied as the roofing materials because its thermal expansion is much smaller than that of austenitic stainless steel. Therefore, it is suitable for the large-scale construction such as airport terminal, convention center, and football stadium. To improve the corrosion resistance of the ferritic stainless steels, the modification of alloy composition has been studied to develop new grade materials and the progress in the surface technology has been introduced. Corrosion properties of these materials were evaluated in the laboratory and in the field for longer than two years. High-Cr ferritic stainless steel showed excellent corrosion resistance to the atmospheric environments. In the region close to the sea, the corrosion resistance of high-Cr ferritic stainless steel was much superior to that of other materials, which may prove this steel to be the appropriate materials for the construction around seashore. In some of the large constructions around seashore in South Korea, high-Cr ferritic stainless steels have been used as the building exterior materials for six years.
Exhaust manifold is a very important component that is directly connected to air environment pollution and that requires strict mechanical properties such as high temperature fatigue and oxidation. Among stainless steels, the ferritic stainless steel with body-centered cubic structure shows excellent resistance of stress-corrosion cracking, ferromagnetic at room temperature, very excellent cold workability and may not be enhanced by heat treatment. The microstructural characteristics of four cast ferritic stainless steels which are high heat-resistant materials, were analyzed. By comparing and evaluating the mechanical properties at room temperature and high temperature in a range of 400℃~800℃, a database was established to control and predict the required properties and the mechanical properties of the final product. The precipitates of cast ferritic stainless steels were analyzed and the high-temperature deformation characteristics were evaluated by comparative analysis of hardness and tensile characteristics of four steels at room temperature and from 400℃ to 800℃.
Generally ferritic stainless steels are used for parts of exhaust system in commercial vehicle, because they have many advantages as low price and high corrosion resistant compared with austenitic stainless steels. Even though ferritic stainless steels have such various merits, austenitic stainless steels have been used to manufacture multi-layer bellows with complex geometry because of their high ductility. Recently, the mechanical properties of the ferritic stainless steels are getting improved and alternating austenitic stainless steel. In this paper, the possibility of mass production of multi-layer bellows made of ferritic stainless steel like MH1 and 443CT was studied. Tensile test, ridging test and corrosion test were carried out to observe material properties of STS304, MH1 and 443CT. Three types of prototype bellows were made using STS304, MH1 and 443CT stainless steels, and stiffness and fatigue tests were carried out to evaluate performance of the prototype bellows.
The ferritic stainless steels are generally considered to have poor weldability compared with that of the austenitic stainless steels. However the primary advantages of ferritic stainless steels include lower material cost than the more commonly used austenitic stainless steels and a greater resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Thus, the weldability of ferritic stainless steels was investigated in this study. In concerning the weldability, Grain size measurement test, Erichsen test and Varestraint test were involved. full penetration welds were produced by autogeneous direct current straight polarity (DCSP) and pulsed currents gas tungsten arc welding (GIAW) and the effect of pulsed currents welding on the welds was compared to that of DCSP welding. The results showed that pulsed current was effective to refine grain size in the weld metal and the finest grain size was obtained at the frequency of 150Hz. In addition, the ductility of welds was lower than that of base metal. Finally, autogeneous type 444 welds were less susceptible to macro solidification cracks, but more sensitive to micro cracks; SEM/EDS analysis indicated that all the inclusions in the crack showed enrichment of Mn, Si, O and S.
Ferritic stainless steels are widely used in the construction industry and in exhaust manifolds due to their low cost and relatively superior stress corrosion cracking resistance and pitting corrosion resistance compared to austenite stainless steels. Ferritic stainless steels are currently welded by various welding process including gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), electron resistance welding (ERW) and laser beam welding. However, when these stainless steels are welded by fusion welding, some problems occur in the fusion zone (FZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ). First, the ductility of the weld is reduced due to the grain growth in the FZ and HAZ. Second, as its HAZ is frequently sensitized during welding, corrosion resistance deteriorates in this region due to the Cr depletion zone. To prevent these problems, it is recommended that ferritic stainless steels be welded with a low heat input. In this study, recent researches in the view of friction stir welded ferritic stainless steels are briefly reviewed.
Ferritic stainless steels of the 400 series have been available for automotive exhaust system, heat exchanger, radiater etc. in various industrial because heat resistance, corrosion resistance and strength are excellent. Especially, automotive exhaust system is required good heat resistance because typical temperature of exhaust system exposed during operation of engine is reach up to $800^{\circ}C$. However, research for effect of high temperature in ferritic stainless steels is not enough. In this study, high temperature tensile properties of lap weld of ferritic stainless steels(STS 429) were investigated. In accordance with heat input, lap welds had been produced and were evaluated at high temperature($800^{\circ}C$) to compare high temperature tensile properties. In addition, room temperature tensile tests were carried out for non-aging and aging specimens. As a result of R.T tensile test, non-aging specimens were fractured in base metal except for low heat input specimen and aging specimens were fractured in weld metal. Also high temperature tensile test were carried out by aging specimen. After high temperature tensile test, fracture of aged specimen was occurred in base metal except for low heat input specimen. Fracture surface of low heat input specimen in weld metal was confirmed as brittle fracture with observation using scanning electron microscope(SEM). Significant decrease in ultimate tensile strength (between 82 and 85%) was observed for aged ferritic stainless steels(STS 429) when tested at high temperature.
Automobile industries have been focusing their efforts on the development of exhaust manifolds using high temperature stainless steels. Exhaust manifolds fabricated with stainless steels can be categorized into tubular and cast ones. The former is usually manufactured by forming and welding process and the latter by vacuum casting process. In the present study, high temperature mechanical properties of 5 austenitic and 4 ferritic stainless steels were investigated by performing a series of high temperature tensile and low cycle fatigue tests. One of the austenitic stainless steels was vacuum cast and the others sand cast. Fatigue life of ferritic stainless steels was higher than that of austenitic ones.

Nucleation and growth process of sticking particle in ferritic stainless steels was investigated using a two disk type hot rolling simulator. The sticking behavior was strongly dependent on the surface roughness of a high speed steel roll(HSS) and the oxidation resistance of the ferritic stainless steels. A hot rolling condition with the lower oxidation resistance of the stainless steel and the higher surface roughness of HSS roll was more sensitive to sticking occurrence. It was also illucidated that the initial sticking particles were nucleated at the scratches formed on the roll surface and were served as the sticking growth sites. As rolling proceeded, the sticking particles grew sites. As rolling proceeded, the sticking particles grew by the process that the previous sticking particles provided the sticking growth sites.
In order to explain the effect of alloying Cu on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels in chloride media for both ferritic and austenitic stainless steels, the corrosion behavior of Cu-bearing stainless steels was investigated. Alloying Cu showed beneficial effect in an active potential range and harmful effect in a noble potential range. The beneficial effect of alloying Cu was explained by the stability of deposited Cu on an anodic surface. Difference in the effect of alloying Cu between the ferritic and austenitic steels was ascribed by the differences in their corrosion potentials and the morphology of the deposited Cu.
