Although ferric sulfate has been proposed as an alternative to formocresol in pulpotomy treatment in primary teeth, it has been given little concern regarding its cytotoxicity and mutagenicity. In the present study, we assessed the in vitro genotoxic effect of a ferric sulfate on human gingival fibroblast cell line (HGF-1). DNA damage was evaluated using comet assay (single cell alkaline gel electrophoresis) and obtained the results as follows: 1. A dose-response relationship was found between ferric sulfate concentrations (0 to 5mM) and DNA damages. 2. Above the concentration of 0.1mM, DNA damage was significantly increased than those of the control (p<0.05). 2. At the fixed concentration of 0.05mM, no significant difference was found between exposure time and DNA damage. These findings suggest that ferric sulfate as a pulpotomy agent can induce DNA damage in human gingival fibroblasts.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of ferric sulfate and formocresol as pulp dressing agents in pulpotomized teeth of dogs. 40 teeth of 5 dogs, weighting 10kg. were used in this study. The animals were sacrificed at the intervals of 3, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days for histopathologic evaluation. The specimens were observed by the light microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Inflammatory response was observed in both groups, but pulp tissue of ferric sulfate group was showed lesser inflammatory degree and more rapid recovery than that of formocresol group. 2. In ferric sulfate group odontoblasts showed irregular arrangement pattern at initial stage and returned to regular pattern after 2 weeks. But in formocresol group. continued irregular pattern of odontoblast was observed during experimental period. 3. Reparative dentin was produced widely along the canal in one specimen of formocresol group at 8 weeks and dentinal bridge was formed in two specimens of ferric sulfate group at 8 weeks.

The objective of this report is to assess clinically and radiographically the state of the primary molars pulpotomized with a 15.5% ferric sulfate solution. The subjects selected were healthy children treated at the pediatric dental clinic of the Seoul National University Hospital in Korea. Thirty teeth were pulpotomized with a ferric sulfate solution(FS). Another twenty-one teeth were pulpotomized with 20% dilute formocresol(FC). Clinical and radiographic data for the fifty-one primary molars were collected with a mean follow-up period of 34 months. The success rate for the FS group was 80.0%. The success rate for the FC group was 81.0%. The differences in the results between the two groups were analyzed statistically utilizing the chi square test. External root resorption was observed in four teeth of FS group and four of the FC group. Periapical bone destruction was observed in three of FS group and two of FC group. There were no significant statistical differences between the success rates for FS group and the FC group.

Pulpotomy is a frequently used treatment modality in primary teeth. It is method by which infected coronal pulp is removed while retaining vital radicular pulp. Since its introduction in 1930 by Sweet formocresol remains the most popular medicament for this treatment. However, despite its outstanding bactericidal properties, formocresol is known to cause adverse tissue reactions. Theoretically, formocresol disinfects and fixes radicular pulp and thus prevents infection and internal resorption. In reality, however, it leads to chronic inflammation and is sometimes responsible for failures through abscess formation and internal root resorption. Also, Myers et al., in 1978, reported on the systemic distribution of FC and other studies have followed with reports of its immunological, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. Much effort has, therefore, focused on the development of alternative medicaments and techniques. Since its introduction in 19C, ferric sulfate proven itself as an effective hemostatic agent and is used as an astringent in dentistry. In 1988, Landau and Johnsen suggested ferric sulfate be used as a medicament in pulpotomy and many studies have focused on it to overcome the toxic effects of FC. Ferric sulfate acts through its ferric ion and iron ion, which react with blood protein leading to aggregation. The aggregated protein acts to plug the blood vessels, causing mechanical hemostasis. As blood clot formation is minimal, there is reduced inflammation of radicular pulp and enhanced healing. There are no reports regarding its systemic distribution. This is a report of cases treated by the author using pulpotomy with ferric sulfate.
In order to remove the pollutants effectively in the dye wastewater by chemical precipitation process, coagulation arid flocculation test were carried out using several coagulants on various reaction conditions. It was found that the Ferrous sulfate was the most effective coagulant for the removal of disperse dye(B79), and we could get the best result lot the removal of disperse dye(B56) in the aspects of TOC removal efficiency and sludge field. When the Ferrous sulfate dosage was $800mg/\ell$, the sludge settling velocity was very fast>, and the color was effectively removed in the disperse dye(B79) solution. Although the color removal was ineffective when the Alum was used as a coagulant, the sludge field was decreased in comparison with the Ferrous sulfate or the Ferric sulfate was used in the disperse dye(B56) solution. The general color removal effect for the disperse dye(B56 and B79) solutions, the Ferric sulfate was more proper coagulant than the Alum. It was showed that TOC removal was improved 5% and over by the addition of Calcium hydroxide, and $30mg/\ell$ of sludge yield was decreased(B79). When Alum or Ferric sulfate was used as a coagulant, pH condition for most effective color removal was 5 in B56 solution. In case of Ferrous sulfate as a coagulant, most effective pH condition for color removal was 9. When Ferric sulfate or Ferrous sulfate was used as a coagulant, pH condition for most effective color removal was 9 in B79 solution.
The coagulation of combined sewer overflows ($CSO_{s}$) was investigated by jar-testing with several commercial coagulants. $CSO_{s}$ sample showed different characteristics of coagulation from secondary wastewater with three common coagulants, aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride and polyaluminum chloride (PACl). Jar-tests showed that relatively wide range of optimal SS and T-P removal yielded with alum and ferric chloride compared with cationic polymers, though efficient SS and T-P removal can be achieved with all three coagulants. The decrease of pH was caused by the increase in dosage of aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride and PACl as coagulants. The pH was changed from 7.0 to 4.7 with the dosages of ferric chloride 25 mL/L. Aluminum sulfate revealed pH of 5.0 and PACl was highest pH of 5.4 after dosing of coagulants. The optimal pH to treat $CSO_{s}$ with aluminum sulfate were 6-6.5; with PACl 6-7, and with ferric chloride higher than 7.

In this study, chemical coagulation conditions for treating combined sewer overflow(CSO) occurred during rainy season were evaluated by jar tests with aluminum sulfate[$Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}17H_2O$] and ferric chloride[$FeCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$]. The raw domestic sewage sampled from the primary sedimentation tank at a local sewage treatment plant was filtered through $150{\mu}m$ sieve before using. Point of zero charge(PZC) for various dose of aluminum sulfate occurred at pH 5.8-6.5, while for ferric chloride occurred at pH 5.3-6.0 in term of streaming current(SC) values. Charge neutralization ability of aluminum sulfate was bigger than that of ferric chloride. Optimum pH and dose of aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride were 6.2, 0.438mM and 5.8, 0.925mM, respectively. Removal efficiencies of TCOD, turbidity, SS and TP were 75, 97, 95, 96% with aluminum sulfate and 74, 96, 98, 99% with ferric chloride at their optimum coagulation conditions. More efficient removal of SS, TP and small particles was possible with ferric chloride at optimum coagulation conditions. Both SC values and COD removal started to increase where soluble phosphorus was completely removed.
The effect of ferrous/ferric molar ratio on the formation of nano-sized magnetite particles was investigated by a co-precipitation method. Ferrous sulfate and ferric sulfate were used as iron sources and sodium hydroxide was used as a precipitant. In this experiment, the variables were the ferrous/ferric molar ratio (1.0, 1.25, 2.5 and 5.0) and the equivalent ratio (0.10, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0), while the reaction temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) and reaction time (30 min.) were fixed. Argon gas was flowed during the reactions to prevent the $Fe^{2+}$ from oxidizing in the air. Single-phase magnetite was synthesized when the equivalent ratio was above 2.0 with the ferrous/ferric molar ratios. However, goethite and magnetite were synthesized when the equivalent ratio was 1.0. The crystallinity of magnetite increased as the equivalent ratio increased up to 3.0. The crystallite size (5.6 to 11.6 nm), median particle size (15.4 to 19.5 nm), and saturation magnetization (43 to 71 $emu.g^{-1}$) changed depending on the ferrous/ferric molar ratio. The highest saturation magnetization (71 $emu.g^{-1}$) was obtained when the equivalent ratio was 3.0 and the ferrous/ferric molar ratio was 2.5.
In order to remove the pollutants effectively in the dye-processing wastewater by chemical precipitation, coagulation and flocculation test was carried out using several coagulants on various reaction conditions. It was found that the Ferric sulfate was best coagulant for the treatment of mixed dye-processing wastewater. When the Ferric sulfate dosage was 1,100mg/$\ell$, the COD removal rate was very high(50%), and the color was removed very effectively. The COD was decreased relatively well up to 40%, when Alum was dosed as coagulant. But it was difficult to remove the color effectively. Test results about COD removal for the Ferrous sulfate and the Ferric chloride used were mostly same as those of the Alum used. However, the color removal by the Ferrous sulfate was much better than the case of the Alum or the Ferric chloride. It was found that the COD removal was increased and the sludge yield was decreased by pH control before polymer flocculant addition, during the jar test for the Ferrous sulfate and the Ferric sulfate as a coagulant.
The chemical formula of magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) is $FeO{\cdot}Fe_2O_3$, t magnetite being composed of divalent ferrous ion and trivalent ferric ion. In this study, the influence of the coexistence of ferrous and ferric ion on the formation of iron oxide was investigated. The effect of the co-precipitation parameters (equivalent ratio and reaction temperature) on the formation of iron oxide was investigated using ferric sulfate, ferrous sulfate and ammonia. The equivalent ratio was varied from 0.1 to 3.0 and the reaction temperature was varied from 25 to 75. The concentration of the three starting solutions was 0.01mole. Jarosite was formed when equivalent ratios were 0.1-0.25 and jarosite, goethite, magnetite were formed when equivalent ratios were 0.25-0.6. Single-phase magnetite was formed when the equivalent ratio was above 0.65. The crystallite size and median particle size of the magnetite decreased when the equivalent ratio was increased from 0.65 to 3.0. However, the crystallite size and median particle size of the magnetite increased when the reaction temperature was increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $75^{\circ}C$. When ferric and ferrous sulfates were used together, the synthetic conditions to get single phase magnetite became simpler than when ferrous sulfate was used alone because of the co-existence of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ in the solution.
