This study was conducted to solve the problem of public grievance owing to odor of a pig farm. Odor emissions from pig production systems mainly originate from liquid manure storage and solid manure fermentation. The low-cost odor abatement system (OAS) for application at liquid manure storage tank and solid manure fermentation facilities was developed in this study. The OAS adapted odor removing principles of a biofilter and biotrickling filter. The OAS is very simplified in structure. The appearance of the OAS had a form of cylindrical or cubical shape. The system performance was monitored for about one year after stabilization. A 7 seconds empty bed contact time for the OAS was adapted to achieve the odor reduction levels. The commercial type of OAS was constructed with media comprised of wood chips. Moisture content always remained above 50% wet basis. Average ammonia removal efficiency for the developed design was 89% at the liquid manure storage tank. Also, the removal efficiency at a solid manure fermentation facility was 86% on ammonia.
The effects of the agitation and aeration rates on the production of serratiopeptidase (SRP) in a 5-L fermentor (working volume 2-l) were systematically investigated using Serratia marcescens NRRL B-23112. The dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, biomass, SRP yield, and maltose utilization were all continuously measured during the course of the fermentation runs. The efficiencies of the aeration and agitation were evaluated based on the volumetric mass transfer coefficient ($K_La$). The maximum SRP production of 11,580 EU/ml with a specific SRP productivity of 78.8 EU/g/h was obtained with an agitation of 400 rpm and aeration of 0.075 vvm, which was 58% higher than the shake-flask level. The $K_La$ for the fermentation system supporting the maximum production (400 rpm, 0.075 vvm) was 11.3 $h^{-1}$. Under these fermentor optimized conditions, kinetic modeling was performed to understand the detailed course of the fermentation process. The resulting logistic and Luedeking-Piret models provided an effective description of the SRP fermentation, where the correlation coefficients for cell growth, SRP formation, and substrate consumption were 0.99, 0.94, and 0.84, respectively, revealing a good agreement between the model-predicted and experimental results. The kinetic analysis of the batch fermentation process for the production of SRP demonstrated the SRP production to be mixed growth associated.
A cellulase hyperproducing mutant strain, JNDY-13, was obtained using the ARTP mutation system and with Trichoderma reesei RUT-C30 as the parent strain. Whole-genome sequencing of JNDY-13 confirmed that 105 of the 653 SNPs were point mutations, 336 mutations were deletions and 165 were insertions. Moreover, 99 mutations were insertions and duplications. Among all the mutations, the one that occurred in the galactokinase gene might be related to the production of cellulases in T. reesei JNDY-13. Moreover, the up-regulation of cellulase and hemicellulase genes in JNDY-13 might contribute to higher cellulases production. Under optimal conditions, the highest cellulase activity by batch fermentation reached 4.35 U/ml, and the highest activity of fed-batch fermentation achieved was 5.40 U/ml.
Ethanol fermentation of glucose by a strain of Saccharomyces cereuisiae was studied in membrane recycle bioreactor, where the fermentation vessel was coupled with cross flow hollow fiber membrane. The cell recycle system controlled backflushing with fresh medium was proven to be effective in alleviating membrane fouling and allowing long term operation of high-cell continuous fermentation. Using 100 g/l initial glucose concentration, the maximum productivity of about 9 5 g/$l \cdot h$ has been achieved at dilution rate 2.5 $h^{-1}$ and bleed stream ratio 0.05 with the corresponding ethanol concentration of 35g/l and glucose conversion of 100%. Increasing the glucose concentration to 200 g/$l \cdot h$ resulted in an increase in ethanol concentration to 48 g/l and productivity to 120 g1l.h. Substrate conversion, however, was only 69%. This productivity was the highest value in the study, and about 38 fold more than that of batch culture and 17 fold more that of single stage continuous culture without cell recycling. No further increase in the productivity was obtained when the glucose concentration was increased reased to 300g/l.
Background: The same plant, Camellia sinensis, is used to produce all types of tea, and the differences among the various types arise from the different processing steps that are used. Based on the degree of fermentation, tea can be classified as black, green, white, or oolong tea. Of these, black tea is the most or fully fermented tea. The oxidized polyphenolic compounds such as theaflavins (TF) and thearubigins (TR) formed during fermentation are responsible for the color, taste, flavor, and aroma of black tea. Results: Research indicates that an optimum ratio of TF and TR (1:10) is required to ensure a quality cup of tea. The concentrations of TF and TR as well as desirable quality characteristics increase as fermentation time increases, reaching optimum levels and then degrading if the fermentation time is prolonged. It is also necessary to control the environment for oxidation. There are no established environment conditions that must be maintained during the fermentation of the ruptured tea leaves. However, in most cases, the process is performed at a temperature of $24-29^{\circ}C$ for 2-4 h or 55-110 min for orthodox tea or crush, tear, and curl (CTC) black tea, respectively, under a high relative humidity of 95-98% with an adequate amount of oxygen. Conclusion: The polyphenolic compounds in black tea such as TF and TR as well as un-oxidized catechins are responsible for the health benefits of tea consumption. Tea is rich in natural antioxidant activities and is reported to have great potential for the management of various types of cancers, oral health problems, heart disease and stroke, and diabetes and to have other health benefits such as the ability to detoxify, improve urine and blood flow, stimulate, and improve the immune system.
In lactic acid fermentation, the end product inhibition by lactic acid causes several problems. The most important of which are low lactate formation rate and its recovery from fermentation broth. To overcome these problems, extractive lactic acid fermentation was carried out in a bioreactor, which was connected to a column packed with anion exchange resin (Amberlite IRA-400, 250 g). The system was started as a batch process, and then the separation process was started when the lactic acid concentration reached 10 g/L, 20 g/L or 30 g/L. In each case, total lactic acid concentration was reached to 48.6, 53.6, 52.6 g/L with its productivity of 1.2 g/L $.$ h, 1.6 g/L $.$ h, and 1.3 g/L $.$ h, respectively Especially, in the case of the 20 g/L recycling-initiation process, extractive fermentation reduced tie fermentation time (17 hrs) by 34% in comparison with the conventional batch process. The direct consequence of this time reduction was shown by a 1.8 fold increase in overall lactic acid productivity.

Changes of chlorophylls and carotenoids and antioxidative characteristics of crude chlorophylls and carotenoids(CCC) of mustard leaf kimchi(MLK) were investigated during the fermentation at 15$^{\circ}C$ for 25 days. At the beginning of fermentation chlorophylls were decreased rapidly, however, all chlorophylls and chlorophyllides were converted to pheophytins and pheophorbides at the final stage of fermentation. Total chlorophyll content remained constantly during the fermentation but 43.7% destruction of carotenoids was observed at 25 days of fermentation. Antioxidative activities of CCC from MLK against autoxidation of linoleic acid were significant(p<0.05) and much higher than those of $\alpha$-tocopherol. Fermentation period did not affect antioxidative activities of CCC of MLK. When the CCC of MLK was added to the autoxidation system of linoleic acid, degradation of total chlorophylls were observed to be slower than that of total carotenoids.
Objective: The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of four fungal pretreatments on the nutritional value of Camellia seed residues, and to evaluate the feeding value of pretreated Camellia seed residues for ruminants. Methods: Camellia seed residues were firstly fermented by four lignin degrading fungi, namely, Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium)-30942, Trichoderma koningiopsis (T. koningiopsis)-2660, Trichoderma aspellum (T. aspellum)-2527, or T. aspellum-2627, under solid-state fermentation (SSF) conditions at six different incubation times. The nutritional value of each fermented Camellia seed residues was then analyzed. The fermentation profiles, organic matter degradability and metabolizable energy of each pre-treated Camellia seed residue were further evaluated using an in vitro rumen fermentation system. Results: After 5 days of fermentation, P. chrysosporium-30942 had higher degradation of lignin (20.51%), consumed less hemicellulose (4.02%), and the SSF efficiency reached 83.43%. T. koningiopsis-2660 degraded more lignin (21.54%) and consumed less cellulose (20.94%) and hemicellulose (2.51%), the SSF efficiency reached 127.93%. The maximum SSF efficiency was 58.18% for T. aspellum-2527 and 47.61% for T. aspellum-2627, appeared at 30 and 15 days respectively. All the fungal pretreatments significantly improved the crude protein content (p<0.05). The Camellia seed residues pretreated for 5 days were found to possess significantly increased organic matter degradability, volatile fatty acid production and metabolizable energy (p<0.05) after the treatment of either P. chrysosporium-30942, T. koningiopsis-2660 or T. aspellum-2527. The fungal pretreatments did not significantly change the rumen fermentation pattern of Camellia seed residues, with an unchanged ratio of acetate to propionate. Conclusion: The fungi showed excellent potential for the solid-state bioconversion of Camellia seed residues into digestible ruminant energy feed, and their shorter lignin degradation characteristics could reduce loss of the other available carbohydrates during SSF.

To speed up the conversion of rice straw into feeds in a low-temperature region, a start culture used for ensiling rice straw at low temperature was selected by continuous enrichment cultivation. During the selection, the microbial source for enrichment was rice straw and soil from two places in Northeast China. Lab-scale rice straw fermentation at $10^{\circ}C$ verified, compared with the commercial inoculant, that the selected start culture lowered the pH of the fermented rice straw more rapidly and produced more lactic acid. The results from denatured gradient gel eletrophoresis showed that the selected start culture could colonize into the rice straw fermentation system. To analyze the composition of the culture, a 16S rRNA gene clone library was constructed. Sequencing results showed that the culture mainly consisted of two bacterial species. One (A) belonged to Lactobacillus and another (B) belonged to Leuconostoc. To make clear the roles of composition microbes in the fermented system, quantitative PCR was used. For species A, the DNA mass increased continuously until sixteen days of the fermentation, which occupied 65%. For species B, the DNA mass amounted to 5.5% at six days of the fermentation, which was the maximum relative value during the fermentation. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first report on ensiling rice straw with a selected starter at low temperature and investigation of the fermented characteristics.
Fermentation characteristics of Kluyveromyces fragilis CBS 1555 with Jerusalem artichoke juice, in extractive ethanol fermentation in aqueous two phase systems composed of polyethylene glycol 20000 (PEG) and crude dextran(Dx), were investigated as a function of initial sugar concentrations, concentrations of ethanol formed, or fermentation time. Both specific ethanol production rate increased with decrease in concentrations of PEG and Dx in two-phase systems. Without being related to the compositions of aqueous two-phase system, maximum specific cell growth rate and maximum specific ethanol production rate were showed in the initial sugar concentration fo $80g/\ell$ and $120g/\ell$, respectively. The inhibition effects of ethanol on specific cell growth rate and specific ethanol production rate decreased with decrease in PEG concentration and in the range of 2.5 to 5% Dx. Specific cell growth rate and specific ethanol production rate was fitted as an exponential function and a hyperbolic function, respectively, of the concentrations of ethanol formed. Overall ethanol productivity increased with increase in initial sugar concentrations, and also the required time for the maximum productivity was so. Ethanol production rate by the elapsed fermentation time showed the maximum value in the initial sugar concentration of $160g/\ell$.
