  • Fenton system using homogeneous iron catalyst is very powerful in the degradation of organic compounds, but has a disadvantage to remove Fe ions from water after wastewater treatment. Thus, iron catalyst was bounded to support such as inorganic and polymer materials. The PVP supporting iron catalyst showed a good catalytic performance in degradation of phenol contained in waste water and iron catalyst supported on ${SO_4}^{2-}$ type PVP (KEX 511) showed the best catalytic performance. Also, reaction kinetic study was carried out in this system. Reaction constants on various catalysts was obtained from the pseudo first order equation. Reaction rate constants with the heterogenized $FeCl_2/PVP$ catalyst is a three-fold smaller than that of $FeCl_2$ catalyst.

  • This work investigated the difference between $Fe^{2+}$ autoxidation-induced and Fenton-type cleavage of pBR322 plasmid DNA. $^{\cdot}OH$ generation reactions in the absence and presence of $H_2O_2$ under various conditions were also investigated. Although both the $Fe^{2+}$ autoxidation and Fenton-type reactions showed DNA cleavage and $^{\cdot}OH$ generation, there were significant differences in their efficiencies and reaction rates. The rate and efficiency of the cleavage reaction were higher in the absence of 1.0 mM of $H_2O_2$ than in its presence in 20 mM phosphate buffer. In contrast, the $^{\cdot}OH$ generation reaction was more prominent in the presence of $H_2O_2$ and showed a pH-independent, fast initial reaction rate, but the rate was decreased in the absence of $H_2O_2$ at across the entire tested pH range. Studies using radical scavengers on DNA cleavage and $^{\cdot}OH$ generation reactions in both the absence and presence of $H_2O_2$ confirmed that both reactions spontaneously involved the active oxygen species $^{\cdot}OH$, ${O_2}^{\cdot-}$, $^1O_2$ and $H_2O_2$, indicating that a similar process may participate in both reactions. Based on the above observations, a new mechanism for the $Fe^{2+}$ autoxidation-induced DNA cleavage reaction is proposed.

  • This study was aimed to investigate treatment feasibility of leachate from D landfill that is located in gyr대ungbuk. From the analytical results of leachate, organic and nonbiodegradable matters were contained in high concentration. Thus chemical treatment was introduced to degrade nonbiodegradable matters in pre or post biological process. Two types of Fenton oxidation were adapted in this study. The first one is pre treatment process before biological treatment. The second one is post treatment process after biological treatment. The optimal conditions of both treatment methods were investigated as follows. In case of pre treatment process, the optimal conditions appeared in $Fe^{+2}/H_2O_2$(mmol/mmol): 0.1, $H_2O_2/CODcr$(mg/mg): 27.0, pH: 3 and reaction time: 2hrs. On the other hand, in case of post treatment process, the optimal conditions appeared in $Fe^{2+}$(mmol/mmol): 0.14, $H_2O_2/COD_{cr}$(mg/mg): 57.4, pH: 3 and reaction time: 1.25hrs. In the above optimal conditions, high COD removal was obtained in pre and post treatment process. Also it can expect that Fenton oxidation converted nonbiodegradable matters into biodegradable matters.

  • A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the treatment of photographic processing wastewater by chemical oxidation and biological treatment system. The effect of reaction conditions such as hydrogen peroxide dosage, ferrous sulfate dosage and pH on the COD removal in Fenton oxidation were investigated. The optimal dosage of hydrogen peroxide was 2.58 M and 3.87 M for the developing and fixing process wastewater, respectively. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5 and the optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 5 for a developing process wastewater. With iron powder catalyst, the COD for a developing process wastewater was removed in lower pH than with ferrous sulfate catalyst. The removal efficiency of COD for refractory compounds such as Diethyleneglycol, Benzylalcohol, Hydroxylamine Sulfate, Ammonium Thiosulfate, Ammonium Ferric EDTA and Disodium EDTA in the photogaphic wastewater was found than 90% except Potassium Carbonate. When the photographic processing wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation was treated with batch activated sludge process, the addition of $KH_2PO_4$ as a phosphorous compound improved the removal efficiency of COD. During the continuous biological treatment of developing and fixing process wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation, the effluent COD concentration less than 100 mg/l was obtained at 0.425 and 0.25 kgCOD/m$^3$.d, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the partial oxidation of the biological treatment plant effluents using Fenton's reagent as a pretreatment step prior to a tertiary biological oxidation of these effluents. Fenton's reagent was evaluated as a pretreatment process for inhibitory or refractory organics. Based on the Fenton oxidation system, the petrochemical wastewater treatment plant effluent was shown to have significant improvement in toxicity after oxidation with hydrogen peroxide. For example, at ranee of 42 ∼ 184 mg/L COD of petrochemical plant effluents, the COD removal efficiencies were from 38.2% to 60.1% after reaction with hydrogen peroxide 200 mg/L and Fe2+ 100 mg/L and reaction time was 30 minutes. The total TOC reduction were about 15.8∼22.4% with same test condition and difference between the overall removal rate and BOD/COD ratio after Fenton's oxidation estabilished in the biodegradation and otherwise meets the discharge standard or reuse for cooling tower make-up water.

  • Fenton reaction with zerovalent iron (ZVI) and $Fe^{2+}$ ions was studied to treat pharmaceutical wastewaters (PhWW) including antibiotics and non-biodegradable organics. Incremental biodegradability was assessed by monitoring biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) changes during Fenton reaction. Original undiluted wastewater samples were used as collected from the pharmaceutical factory. Experiments were carried out to obtain optimal conditions for Fenton reaction under different $H_2O_2$ and ion salts (ZVI and $Fe^{2+}$) concentrations. The optimal ratio and dosage of $H_2O_2$/ZVI were 5 and 25/5 g/L (mass basis), respectively. Also, the optimal ratio and dosage of $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ ions were 5 and 35/7 g/L (mass basis), respectively. Under optimized conditions, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency by ZVI was 23% better than the treatment with $Fe^{2+}$ ion. The reaction time was 45 min for ZVI and shorter than 60 min for $Fe^{2+}$ ion. The COD and total organic carbon (TOC) were decreased, but BOD was increased under the optimal conditions of $H_2O_2$/ZVI = 25/5 g/L, because organic compounds were converted into biodegradable intermediates in the early steps of the reaction. The BOD/TOC ratio was increased, but reverse-wise, the COD/TOC was decreased because of generated intermediates. The biodegradability was increased about 9.8 times (BOD/TOC basis), after treatment with ZVI. The combination of chemical and biological processes seems an interesting combination for treating PhWW.

  • This research was carried out to evaluate role of supplementary reagents, such as phosphate and SDS, to remove hydrophobic organic contaminant from soils during the EK-Fenton process. The $H_2O$$_2$ stability improved due to the role as stabilizer of phosphate and SDS during the EK-Fenton process. Furthermore, although pH in region near cathode was 8.2 after test, $H_2O$$_2$ stability improved due to transportation of SDS in the region near cathode. Therefore, in tests using phosphate and SDS as supplementary reagent, the efficiency of phenanthrene treatment improved through the EK-Fenton process using longer reaction time.

  • This study explored the feasibility of applying Electrokinetic-Fenton process(EK-Fenton process) to remediation of contaminant sorbed on the soil possessed low-permeability. The addition of 0.01 N H$_2$SO$_4$ in the anode reservoir for the $H_2O$$_2$stabilization improved the stabilization of $H_2O$$_2$and the treatment effect of phenanthrene across the entire soil specimen. The use of $H_2O$$_2$and dilute acid as anode purging solution is a promising method treating of HOCs in low-permeability subsurface environments.

  • For further removal of non-biodegradable CODs and color in biologically treated distillery waster water, we selected a chemical treatment with Fe(III) and cationic polymers and then another chemical treatment with Fenton reagent. We developed Pregenerated Bubble Flotation(PBF) to effectively remove the chemical sludge from each chemical reaction process. The flotation unit was constructed with hydraulic loading rate, 7 ㎥/$m^2$.hr. The CODMn and suspended solids (SS) in biologically treated distillery waste water were reduced by the first PBF from 310-1096 mg/L to 141-303 mg/L and from 160-990 mg/L to 48-385 mg/L, respectively. Again, after the Fenton reaction process, floated SS was skimmed off at the top of the flotation unit and the final effluent was directly discharged without any tap water dilution. The quality of final effluent can be below 40 mg/L-CODMn but IISan Distilery has been maintained effluent quality of 73 mg/L-CODMn and 10-80 mg/L-SS. The chemical cost was saved by more than 30% as compared with that of prior process.

  • A nanocomposite consisting of $Fe_3O_4$ and MWCNT was produced via sol-gel technique using $FeCl_3$ along with MWCNT by calcination at $300^{\circ}C$. The degradation effect of rhodamine B dye has been investigated under UV illumination in a darkroom. The degradation reaction was studied by monitoring the discoloration of dye as a function of irradiation time using UV-visible spectrophotometeric technique. The $Fe_3O_4$-MWCNT samples have continuous degradation ability under the UV illumination with the first order kinetics and the dye removal was better than in the pristine $Fe_3O_4$. The resultant composite catalyst was found to be efficient for the photo-Fenton reaction of the dye.
