The characteristics of Boussinesq starting forced plumes were investigated in this study. Two distinct periods in the transient plume penetration were identified, namely the Period of Flow Development (PFD) and Period of Developed Flow (PDF). PFD refers to the time period whereby the penetration rate is governed by the complex vortex dynamics initiated by the exit conditions that can include vortex coalescence, vortex leapfrogging, pinching off of the head vortex from the trailing stem and the eventual reconnection. The pinch-off and reconnection leads to an overshoot of the plume front which is a common observation reported in previous studies. The penetration rate in PDF is more predictable and depends on the continuous feeding of buoyancy and momentum into the head vortex by the trailing buoyant-jet stem. Similarity solutions are developed for PDF to describe the temporal variation of the penetration rate, by incorporating the behavior of an isolated buoyant vortex ring and recent laboratory results on the trailing buoyant jet. In particular, the variations of velocity ratios between the head vortex and trailing buoyant jet are analytically computed. To verify the similarity solutions, experiments were conducted on vertical starting forced plumes using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF).
In the study, we have developed a straightening system for 304 micro wires that are normally used in the medical and semi-conductor fields. To apply heat to the micro wires, we introduced the direct wire heating method which generates the thermal energy by the electrical resistance of the wire itself. To avoid the deterioration of the wire surface by the environment, such as the oxidation or the hydration, the $N_2$ gas was filled in the glass pipe in which the straightening process was being performed. A precision tension meter was also attached to control the tension of the wire during the heating and straightening process. In order to control the straightening process, several experimental investigations with varying the tension, the feeding velocity and the temperature (current) was carried out. As a result of experiments, we obtained the optimal processing conditions satisfying the straightness requirement of the micro wires.
Instead of direct driving like BLDC, the induction principle is adopted as a driving one for planar stage. The stage composed of four linear induction motors put in square type is activated by two-axial forces; low-frequency attractive force and thrust force of the linear induction motors. Here, the modified vector control whose new inputs are q-axis current and dc current biased to three phase current instead of d-axis current or flux current is applied extensively to overall motion of the stage. For the developed system, the precision step test and the constant velocity test are tried to guarantee its feasibility for TFT-LCD pattern inspection. However, to exclude a discontinuity due to phase shift and minimize a force ripple synchronized with the command frequency, the initial system is revised to the antagonistic structure over the full degree of freedom. Concretely describing, the porous air bearings guide an air-gapping of the stage up and down and a pair of liner induction motors instead of single motor are activated in the opposite direction each other. The performances of the above systems are compared from trapezoid tracking test and sinusoidal test.
In modern industries, materials are required that possess multi-functional properties and at the same time flexibility in their shapes with structural stability. The major technology realizing this requirement consists of thinning metal wires and laying them with stable contact nodes. This research has dealt with a new method to manufacture thin wires by drawing without applying dies, but with introducing enforced necking, which enables to process multi-ends. Based on the new method, the process dynamics was modelled and its steady-state characteristics were analyzed. Results showed that the profiles of the material velocity in the drawing zone increased with a downward convex shape, while the cross-sectional area decreased with the shape of upward convex. The microwave heating turned out to be effective in wire drawing, but dependent on the input feeding direction. The variation in the diameters of the drawn wires was negatively affected by increasing the drawing ratio.
This study created the running water (Bandibooliwon) and lentic water (Sooryunwon) artificial habitats of Luciola lateralis in Hwadamsup, Gwangju-si, Gyunggi-do from April 2014 to February 2016. Through various habitat types, metapopulation was formed, and more sound population was induced to be maintained via interactions between habitats. We investigated coenosite at the habitat creation-target site, and 20 species in the lentic water site and 38 species in running water site were found. After releasing L. lateralis, we checked the status of settlement of L. lateralis larvae through traps and macroscopy, controlled the flow velocity of the habitats in line with the life cycle of L. lateralis (hatching, larva period, landing, pupation, copulation, and oviposition), and shaped gentle slope at water side, and planted moss. We artificially supplied melanian snails (Semisulcospira sp.), the food source, in the running water site and induced stable feeding. Also, We created artificial insectary, bred larvae stably in winter, and secured firefly population for a festival. Through night time observation, the time most suitable for a festival was confirmed to be from 20:30 to 22:00.
We explore the role of various environments in triggering star formation (SF) and narrow-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) in SDSS spiral galaxies and the SF-AGN connection, using a volume-limited sample with $M_r$ < -19.5 and 0.02 < z < 0.055 selected from the SDSS Release 7. To avoid the dependency of AGN activity on bulge mass, the central velocity dispersion of the sample galaxies is limited to have a narrow range of $130{\leq}{\sigma}{\leq}200km\;s^{-1}$. We note that in gas sufficient galaxies, AGN feeding lags behind starburst, whereas as the gas exhausts, the SF slows down and AGN seems to even prevent the SF, and thus divide the high-${\sigma}$ sample into two subsamples according to their cold gas content at central region traced by fiber star formation rate, $SFR_{fib}$. We find that a high density (cluster) environment causes a significant increase in AGN activity as well as gas depletion in host galaxies. However, the finding is only noticeable in the high-${\sigma}$ and low $SFR_{fib}$ sample. It seems that a galaxy interaction with the nearest neighbor directly affects the SF of the central region. However, it is unclear whether it directly affects AGN activity.
Recently, the evolution in production techniques (e.g. high-speed milling) and the complex shapes involved in modem production design has been increasingly popular. The key to the achievement is a drastic improvement of the dynamic behavior of the machine tool axes used in production machinery. The more complex these tool paths the higher the speed and acceleration requirements. But it is very difficult to reach the target for high speed machine tool because of the limitations of servo system and motion control system. However the direct drive design of machine tool axes, which is based on linear motors and which recently appeared on the market, is a viable candidate to meet the ever increasing demands, because of these advantages such as no backlash, less friction, more mechanical simplicity and very higher acceleration and velocity comparing to the traditional system. This paper focused on the performance tests of the high speed horizontal machine tool based on linear motor. Especially, dynamic characteristics were investigated through circular test and circular form machining test is carried out considering many important parameter. Therefore these several experiments is used to be evaluated the model for prediction of circular motion error and circular machined error.
This study was carried out getting basic data for developing a new combine which is suitable for the cultivating situation in Korea or Southeast Asia. The relation of the amount of unthreshed grains and the axial displacement of crop in threshing process was attempted to formulate mathematically in a threshing chamber of axial-flow threshing unit. It was found that unthreshed grain is an exponetially-decaying functon of axial displacement of grains based on available data. Threshing experiments were performed to validate the mathematical model by changing various levels of pertinent variables for malting barley. Good correlation were obtained between the theoretical calculation and observed data for various test conditions, such as inclination, vane pitch, concave length, drum speed, feeding velocity, stream weight, moisture content. Therefore the model can be used for general purpose to find the amount of unthreshed grain if the mean rate of occurence of threshing of kernels(${\lambda}_{\tau}$) is properly calibrated considering some other operating conditions and crop conditions which are not involved in this analysis.
Commercial coal gasifiers typically use entrained flow type reactors, but have unique features in terms of reactor shape, gasifying agent, coal feeding type, ash/slag discharge, and reaction stages. The MHI gasifier is characterized as air-blow dry-feed entrained reactor, which incorporates a short combustion stage at the bottom and a tall gasification stage above. This study investigates the flow and reaction characteristics inside a MHI gasifier by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in order to understand its design and operation features. For its pilot-scale system at 200 ton/day capacity, the distribution of coal and air supply between the two reaction stages was varied. It was found that the syngas composition and carbon conversion rate were not significantly influenced by the changes in the distribution of coal and air supply. However, the temperature, velocity and flow pattern changed sensitively to the changes in the distribution of coal and air supply. The results suggest that one key factor to determine the operational ranges of coal and air supply would be the temperature and flow pattern along the narrower wall between the two reaction stages.
