  • In this paper, we have described a simple CPW-fed UWB antenna for wireless UWB communication. The proposed antenna consists of two symmetrical strips having two steps and CPW feeding. Two techniques(symmetrical structure, two steps) are used to produce good low-dispersion and impedance matching. The proposed UWB antenna has an omni directional radiation pattern, compact size, low dispersion, and low cost.

  • This study extends the modified linear feedback equalizer (MLFE), normally used for differentially coherent DPSK systems, to the equalization of double differentially coherent PSK (DDPSK) signals. By feeding back into the feedback part after modifying the equalizer output using decision feedback-based demodulation, the proposed equalizer can operate like an equalizer with a decision feedback structure. Simulation results showthat performances of the decision feedback demodulation-based feedback equalizer (DFD-FE) approach those of the DFE/coherent.

  • An orthogonal antenna is presented for reader applications of radio frequency identification (RFID) at 433 MHz. The antenna is composed of two $1{\times}2$ sub-arrays orthogonally placed on a ground plane. Two different feeding networks are introduced to control horizontal and vertical radiation current flows for each sub-array, respectively. An inverted-F structure is used as a radiation element with vertical and horizontal currents flowing on the radiator, thereby obtaining two linear polarizations. Antenna gains are 3.71 and 3.43 dBi and isolation between the two input ports is less than 25dB.

  • Substructure shake table testing is a class of real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS). It combines shake table tests of substructures with real-time computational simulation of the remaining part of the structure to assess dynamic response of the entire structure. Unlike in the conventional hybrid simulation, substructure shake table testing imposes acceleration compatibilities at substructure boundaries. However, acceleration tracking of shake tables is extremely challenging, and it is not possible to produce perfect acceleration tracking without time delay. If responses of the experimental substructure have high correlation with ground accelerations, response errors are inevitably induced by the erroneous input acceleration. Feeding the erroneous responses into the RTHS procedure will deteriorate the simulation results. This study presents a set of techniques to enable reliable substructure shake table testing. The developed techniques include compensation techniques for errors induced by imperfect input acceleration of shake tables, model-based actuator delay compensation with state observer, and force correction to eliminate process and measurement noises. These techniques are experimentally investigated through RTHS using a uni-axial shake table and three-story steel frame structure at the Johns Hopkins University. The simulation results showed that substructure shake table testing with the developed compensation techniques provides an accurate and reliable means to simulate the dynamic responses of the entire structure under earthquake excitations.

  • This study describes the optimum structure and deployment of an abalone reef for marine ranching creation in Jeonnam archipelago of Korea. The structure of an abalone reef was analyzed based upon the functions of both feeding and shelter. Deployments of abalone reefs were considered based upon the stability against waves in water depth shallower than 5 m. Also, the calculation of their stabilities was made to only rocks of abalone modules, and exposure coefficient of rocks used was 1.0 and 0.5. The results show that rocks of both 0.2 and 0.5 ton are unstable under the condition that exposure coefficient is 1.0 at a depth of 5 m, but that they are stable under the condition that exposure coefficient is 0.5. It means that, if the structures(e.g. breakwater blocks) for dissipating the energy of waves and currents are provided, small rocks of 0.2 ton can be used as an abalone reef.

  • Functional feeding groups (FFGs) of benthic macroinvertebrates are guilds of invertebrate taxa that obtain food in similar ways, regardless of their taxonomic affinities. They can represent a heterogeneous assemblage of benthic fauna and may indicate disturbances of their habitats. The proportion of different groups can change in response to disturbances that affect the food base of the system, thereby offering a means of assessing disruption of ecosystem functioning. In this study, we used benthic macroinvertebrate communities collected at 650 sites of 23 different water types in the province of Overijssel, The Netherlands. Physical and chemical environmental factors were measured at each sampling site. Each taxon was assigned to its corresponding FFG based on its food resources. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) using a backpropagation algorithm, a supervised artificial neural network, was applied to evaluate the influence of environmental variables to the FFGs of benthic macroinvertebrates through a sensitivity analysis. In the evaluation of input variables, the sensitivity analysis with partial derivatives demonstrates the relative importance of influential environmental variables on the FFG, showing that different variables influence the FFG in various ways. Collector-filterers and shredders were mainly influenced by $Ca^{2+}$ and width of the streams, and scrapers were influenced mostly with $Ca^{2+}$ and depth, and predators were by depth and pH. $Ca^{2+}$ and depth displayed relatively high influence on all four FFGs, while some variables such as pH, %gravel, %silt, and %bank affected specific groups. This approach can help to characterize community structure and to ecologically assess target ecosystems.

  • Cell structure is based on proteins. Since the antibody is proteous substance, the continous low protein feeding decreases the resistance of host against pathogenic agents. The present study was designed to investigate the infectivity of protozoa to rats which were fed with variously prescribed diets. Experimental group was divided into 4 groups according to the level of casein in the diet, group I: casein 0%, group II: casein 5%, group III: casein 15%, group IV: casein 30%. Each animal was fed for 5 weeks followed by inoculation of protozoa in cecum and sacrified each 1 week later of the infection. Each diet group, non infected with protozoa was recognized as the control. Result are summerized as follows : 1. All the rats of group I died in 2∼4 weeks and 2 of 12 rats in group II were also died in the period. 2. The growth rate and FER were high in group III and IV compared with group II. Therefore low protein feeding decrease growth and feed efficaly ratio(FER). 3. The pH of caecal contents between the infected group and control showed no difference, but the values of group III and IV were higher than the group II. Low pH of the caecal contents provides a suitable condition for determining their susceptibility to Entameoeba histolytical trophozoite. 4. Amounts of serum total protein in group II, III and IV showed no significant difference with the control and infected group, but amounts in group III and IV were higher than the group II. Therefore, continuous low protein feeding decrease serum total protein. 5. Albumin, ${\alpha}$1, gloulin, ${\alpha}$2 globulin, ${\beta}$ globulin, ${\gamma}$ gloulin of group III and IV were all high to compare than the group II. Albumins of group III and IV of control was higher than infected group, but there was no difference in ${\gamma}$ globulin between the infected and control group.

  • In this letter, a compact rectangular spiral antenna is proposed. Instead of a center excitation of conventional spiral antennas, the proposed antenna is adopted a modified feed network, feeding at the end of the spiral. The matching circuit of $'{\sqsupset}'$ shape is added at the feeding point. With this matching circuit, we can easily match the input impedance well, without the limit of the space. The parameter which determines the circular wave characteristic is explained, and the design guideline of the proposed antenna is presented. We design a proposed antenna operating at 9.5 GHz. Its size is only $0.6\lambda_g\times0.6\lambda_g$. The simulated bandwidth of the input impedance $(S11\leq-10)$ is 8.12% and that of $(AR\leq-3)$ is 4.62%, which is excellent characteristics as compared to its simple structure.
