  • The heat generation at the start-up period of an autogeneous single screw extruder was determined with various feed materials, die structure and operational conditions. The highest heat generation rate was observed with defatted soybean meal, while the lowest value was obtained with rice flour, and wheat and barley flour showed the intermediate rate. As the moisture content of the flour decreased and the screw speed increased, the electric power requirement and heat generation rate increased. The temperature at compression section increased with the decrease in the particle size. The same effect was also observed as breaker plate was installed. The optimum operation was established as the temperature profile was maintained in decreasing order of metering section, die and compression section.

  • Eleven sorghun-sudangrass hybrids have been recommended as the government recommended forage cultivars, however, their forage performance and quality have mostly been tested at two regions, such as Suweon in the Middle Northwestern Coast Region and Sunghwan in the Middle Southwestern Coast Region. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to retest the forage performance and quality of eleven government recommended sorghum-sudangrass hybrids(TE haygrazer, 988. TE haygrazer-R, SX-17, NC + 855, 855F, GW9110G, G83F, Sordan 79, Speed feed and Jumbo) at five regions, such as Icheon in the Middle Northern Inland, Suweon in the Middle Northwestern Coast, Sunghwan in the Middle Southwestern Coast, Keongsan in the Keongpook Inland and Kwangju in the Southern Inland, 1993 and 1995. Among the eleven hybrids tested, 'NC + 855' gave the highest forage yield at all regions when averaged over the two-year period, but others varied by region. 'NC + 855' was the highest yielding at Icheon, Keongsan and Kwangju, G83F was highest at Suweon and 855F was highest at Sunghwan. 'Jumbo' (headless type) was generally higher in forage quality than others, but at both Suweon and Icheon, 'NC + 855' and '855F' were higher quality than others. As the results of the experiment, 'TE haygrazer', 'NC + 855' , G83F and 'GW9110G1 at Icheon, 'G83F' and 'Sordan 79' at Suweon, 'NC + 855' and '855F' at Sunghwan, '988' and 'NC + 855' at Keongsan, and 'TE haygrazer-R' , 'NC + 855', 'GW9110G' and 'G83F' at Kwangju might be preferable to other hybrids because they have higher forage yield.

  • The speed of the reformation of the Korean engineering and science education systems is very slow compared with the fast change of the society. Current society requires colleges to raise high quality gold color engineers, who can feed tens of thousands people, however current education system cannot fulfill the requirement. So we need a novel education system to adapt the fast change of the society. In this study, we analyzed the difference of the education quality between supplies and demands, and based on the analysis, we suggested a new continuous quality improving system. We also collected current data on the student capability of Korean engineering freshmen and surveyed on the required vocational basic skills. Finally we suggested some programs with that the government could support improving the quality of engineering and science college students.

  • This study presents an electronic catalogue based cutting parameter selection system using MS Access software. The proposed system has been designed to electronically select proper cutting conditions based on the stored data base. The existing approaches used in most small and medium sized companies are basically to use manufacturing engineer's experience or to find the recommended values from the manufacturing engineer handbook. These processes are often time consuming and inconsistent, especially when a new engineer is involved. Therefore, this study proposes a simple, yet quick and consistent electronic catalogue based cutting parameter selection method which uses MS Access in terms of programming and database implementation. Consequently, the proposed system could automatically generate the proper cutting conditions (feed, depth of cut, and cutting speed) as soon as the input data (proper information about the tool and work material) is given. Thanks to the simple structure and popularity of the MS Access, the engineer could be quickly accustomed to the system and easily modify/insert/delete the database if necessary.

  • This research was conducted to study the characteristics of the extruded products prepared from blends containing fixed amounts of frozen pollack (20%) and defatted soy flour (5%) and varying amounts of rice and corn flour using laboratory-scale single-screw extruder. Extrusion conditions were set at 27% feed moisture, $160^{\circ}C$ process temperature and 170 rpm screw speed. Results showed that there was almost no difference in proximate compositions among all extruded products. The product made from 100% rice flour had the highest expansion ratio, the lowest bulk density and the lowest shear force (P<0.05). Also, this product was the highest in L value and had the highest preference in sensory evaluation. Consequently, the addition of frozen pollack and defatted soy flour to rice flour could make desirable expanded extruded products. This study will form the basis for future development of rice snacks containing frozen pollack.

  • Bale is an operation of collecting livestock feed materials from field crop residue, and mechanization demand on the operation has been increased. Bailers imported from foreign countries such as Japan and European countries have been used, but those models showed improper performance in Korean situations. In recent years, a steel-roller type round baler attachable to medium size tractors(40 to 60 HP) for effective bale operation in Korea was developed. This study was conducted to evaluate field performance of the baler. For proper baling operation, engine speed was greater than 1,800rpm, average traction force and PTO torque were about 4kN and in a range of 380-671Nm, and maximum values were about 7kN and 3,000Nm, respectively. Performance evaluation tests for sudan grass, rice straw, and blue barley showed that field capacity was 0.59ha/h for blue barley and 0.99ha/h for sudan grass and rice straw. Bale weight, diameter, width, and bulk density were in ranges of 176.1~418.4kg, 1.07~1.12m, 1.02~1.04m, and 175.3~454.1kg/$m^3$. Noise sound level during the baling operation was 4dB greater than idle operation condition, which was considered to be ignorant.

  • The permeation experiments were carried out for the submerged membrane module equipped with self-designed rotating disks in order to determine the effect of fouling reduction and the optimum operating conditions as a function of operating time. Kaolin and bentonite particles were used to prepare various concentrations of feed solution. Every experiment was continued until 60 minutes at various rotating disk speeds up to 120 rpm. The suction pressure for kaolin solutions decreased to 28% by using rotating disk to decrease the fouling. Also, the optimum permeation flux decreased as kaolin concentration increased, and became 60 to 70 LMH for 0.4 wt% of kaolin solution. The suction pressure for bentonite experiment approached to 0 mmHg at 30 LMH and above 80 rpm rotating disk speed.

  • Burr generation is inevitable during the machining of a micro-pattern, and it is difficult to distinguish between the pattern and burr because they have a very small dimensions. In this study, a micro-pattern with a pitch of $60{\mu}m$and height of $1{\mu}m$ was fabricated on a cylindrical surface using a turning machine. The structure of a burr and its generation mechanism were determined, and a magnetic abrasive deburring process was used to improve the accuracy of the pattern. As a result, when fabricating a micro-pattern, it was shown that the direction of the burr was determined by the feed direction of the tool. The measured pattern height was $1.018{\mu}m$ when the magnetic flux density and spindle speed were respectively 40 mT and 1600 rpm, respectively, during magnetic abrasive deburring, which were determined to be the optimal conditions for processing.

  • HVOF thermal spray coating of micron size Co-alloy powder has been studied for the durability improvement of high velocity spindle (HVS). Optimal coating process of this system for the best surface properties is hydrogen flow rate 75 FMR, oxygen flow rate 38-42 FMR, feed rate 30 g/min at spray distance 5 inch. Friction coefficient (FC) and wear trace (WT) decrease increasing coating surface temperature from 25$^{\circ}$C to 538$^{\circ}$C due to the higher lubricant effects of the oxides at the higher temperature. At the study of adhesion of T800 coating on a light metal alloy Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) tensile bond strength (TBS) and tensile fracture location (TFL) of Ti64/T800 are 8,740 psi and near middle of T800 coating respectively. This shows that adhesion of Ti64/T800 is higher than the cohesion strength (8,740 psi) of T800 coating. Therefore T800 coating is strongly advisable for the surface coating on HVS such as high speed air-bearing spindle.

  • The lithographic process depends on a satisfactory ink-in-water emulsion being formed during printing and the speed of wet presses makes the choice of fountain solution vitally important as the ink and fount must react quickly to form a stable emulsion. Ink and water come into contact with each other on the rolls of the press and are forced together in the roll nips. The water is not soluble in the ink since it is slightly fat. Instead, an emulsion is formed, a heterogeneous mass consisting of small water drops mixed into the ink, if the water feed is too great. This emulsification can affect the properties of an off-set ink and negatively affect the printability. So we investigated the effects of the emulsification of phenol free heat-set ink and existing heat-set ink on printed quality, such as amount of ink transfer, printed density, print-through and uniformity. We used Duke emulsification tester for the emulsification of inks, and used IGT printability tester for printed quality. The printed quality were measured by densitometer and were evaluated by the image analysis system. Compared to conventional printing ink, phenol-free ink showed better results of the printability at the emulsification.
