  • A comparative study was conducted to examine the effects of mixed and separate gender feeding on growth performance of Korean native chickens (KNC) against a white semi-broiler (WSB) and a commercial broiler (CB) over five weeks. 576 chicks were used with eight birds per cage in a randomized complete block design with 18 replicates per breed. For the KNC lines, three groups of male (M), female (F) and mixed-gender (FM) were used. Fresh water and feed were supplied on an ad-libitum basis. Birds were fed a standard starter (d 1 - 22) and grower diet (d 23 - 35). Body weight (BW), feed intake, and shank length (SL) were measured weekly. From the BW and feed consumed data, the average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated. The commercial broiler showed higher performance (p < 0.05) for all the indices measured for the entire period. The CB group consumed more feed and were more feed-efficient thus grew faster. This group was followed by the white semi-broiler and the KNC, in order. An intra-breed comparison for KNCs revealed that the males showed better growth performance with longer SL (p < 0.05) compared to the female and mixed-gender groups. The results showed that other than the breed type, mixed and separate gender feeding impacted on the growth performance of the two lines of Korean native chickens. Males for both lines of KNC generally performed better for the parameters measured, as determined by a greater BW and reduced FCR.

  • Objective: The purpose of the study is to evaluate appropriate weight for aged farmers in manually handling livestock feed in bags using ergonomic methods. Background: In the livestock industry in South Korea, despite the trend of aging of labor manpower, heavy items are still manually handled in many farms. In particular, among stockbreeding works, the handling of feed in bags weighing 25~30kg is reported as a cause of frequent injuries and musculoskeletal system diseases. However, studies on the standard for recommended weight allowed considering the physical characteristics of aged farmers older than 60 years with greatly decreased physical strength and muscle strength are insufficient. Method: To evaluate appropriate weight for handling of heavy livestock feed in bags, physical techniques for measuring recognized levels of physical work loads, the NLE (NIOSH lifting equation) a method that is an observation type technique, and an ergonomic modeling technique to predict compressive force imposed on L5/S1 were used. Subjects who participated in the experiment were organized into two groups of males/females with mean age exceeding 60 years, and lifting tasks were evaluated for nine weight levels. Results: Based on the results of psychophysical measurement, females showed a tendency of more drastic increases compared to males when weight was over 19kg. The results of estimation of regression models for the weight, 18.0 kg ($r^2=0.97$) and 15.3kg ($r^2=0.97$) were evaluated as stable load for males and females, respectively. In addition, both the observation type evaluation and ergonomic model evaluation showed stable loads in a range of 15~18kg. Conclusion: Given the results of the study, the weight of the feed in bags currently distributed to farms can become a cause of not only overexertion but also farm work related disasters such as musculoskeletal disorders and safety accidents. Providing livestock feed in bags weighing not more than 19kg for aged farmers is judged desirable, and managerial improvement for this matter is considered necessary. Application: The results of the present study can be utilized as useful data for institutional improvement of the weight of livestock feed in bags.

  • This study was conducted on combined cycle power plant consisting of HRSG with integral deaerator type to avoid tube failures of low pressure evaporator tubes. Based on the observation of pH variation at the discharge of boiler feed water pump by continuous pH measurement for a period of time, it was identified that pH of feed water is getting reduced as ammonia is distributed into vapor and liquid depending on the distribution ratio of ammonia in the LP drum after the deaerator. To solve this problem, the counterplan was prepared by reexamination of ammonia injection point and quantity. In conclusion, it was accomplished that 9.2~9.6 is the optimized pH range for boiler feed water by arranging additional piping for ammonia to inject directly to LP drum.

  • Ferritin is known to regulate iron metabolism and maintain iron in a variety of the eukaryotic organisms. The region encoding the mature ferritin (0.47 kb, H-type) of Periserrula leucophryna was amplified using the designed primers including restriction enzyme site and termination codon and subcloned in frame to the pRBAS secretion vector containing the signal sequence, RBS, and promoter of amylase gene (E. coli-Bacillus shuttle vector), resulting in recombinant pRBAS-PLF vector. Recombinant ferritin (18 kDa) was correctly processed and secreted from Bacillus subtilis LKS strain harboring the pRBAS-PLF vector and quantitatively analyzed by SDS-PAGE and western blot, respectively. Secretion of the ferritin was optimized by culture conditions (host, medium, temperature, nitrogen source) in 3 L batch culture and 5 L jar fermenter. Finally. the ferritin was largely produced using 50 L fermenter as the following conditions; at $30^{\circ}C$, 150 rpm, 1 vvm in Bacillus subtilis LKS using PY medium. The secreted ferritin was maximally measured (approximately 177.6 ug/ml) when the cell density reached to 14.4 at $OD_{600}$ (20 h incubation). The iron binding activity was confirmed by Perls' staining in 7.5% non-denaturing gel, indicating that the multimeric ferritin (composed of 24 subunits) was formed in the culture broth after secretion. Biologically, the culture broth and powder type containing ferritin were tested for possibility as feed additive in chicken broiler. As a result, the ferritin stimulated the growth of chick broil and improved feed efficiency and production index.

  • The main purpose of the present study is to evaluate a revolving plate type biofilter system for mass culture of eel(Anguilla japonica) based on the experimental rearing for 120 days (Oct. 1982-Feb. 1983). Water quality changes, growth efficiency of fish and fish disease treatment were critically evaluated. A revolving plate type biofilter system was designed(Fig. 1). The system consisted of a glass tank (150 l), a revolving plate biofilter and a settling tank(150 l). The biofilter consisted of 60 submerged quadriangular plates ($28{\times}37$ cm) and 30 revolving plates (32 cm diameter) for a total of 19.0 $m^2$ of surface area. The revolving plates were made to rotate 10 time per minute, The total water volume of the rearing system were 300 l, and everyday 1/3 of the total water volume were changed with freshly prepared water. In the rearing system a total of 2 kg of eel (1,500 individuals, mean weight:1.3 g) were reared fed on the pellet feed and the dough feed. The growth efficiency were much better for the pellet feed (FC: 1.79) compared to the dough feed (FC: 3.56). During the experimental rearing water quality control was satisfactory. Total ammonia concentrations were 0.38-0.59 ppm and nitrite concentration were 0.83-1.19 ppm. On the other hand alkalinity decreased from 176ppm just after the water change to 17ppm just before the water change. The low alkaline condition was compensated by the regular change of water. Epidemics of parasitic gill-flocks (Pseudodactvlogylus sp.) was observed, and they were easily eliminated by the treatment of DDVP (1.0 ppm). Trichodina sp. and Costia sp. were observed, and they were also controlled by the treatment of potassium permanganate (4.0 ppm).

  • To model the behavior of expanded beds with aqueous feed streams containing different amounts of glycerol, we previously developed a modified Stokes expression that correlates the terminal settling velocity of a particle of a solution with the properties of the particle (particle diameter and density) and the solution (density and viscosity). Two empirical parameters, the effective diameter of the poly-disperse resins for protein adsorption and an exponent of non-unity for $(\rho_{P}-\rho)/\mu$ term, are introduced in the modified Stokes expression. We applied the same type of the modified Stokes expression in combination with the Richardson-Zaki correlation to the published results [1], and found that the expansions of the beds with feed streams containing different amounts of E. coli homogenates can also be successfully described.

  • In sewing, fabrics is fed by an elliptic motion of the feed dog. The feeding control mechanism controls an elliptic motion of the feed dog, finally, controls stitch spacings and feeding directions of fabrics. This study discusses the feeding control mechanism of an industrial lock stitch sewing machine, which is a good example to study a machine kinematics. This study makes mathematical expressions of machine's motion in the feeding control mechanism. Thus, the motions of this mechanism are characterized, which will be used for kinematic analysis of the feed dog later. Also, the above mathematical expressions may be a basis for the new design of the feeding control mechanism and may be applied to development of the similar feeding control mechanism of other type sewing machine.

  • Micro-machine tool is essential in the micro/meso cutting for the sake of saving of space, resources, and energy. In this research, a micro-turning lathe was fabricated with piezoelectric feed drive mechanism, and motion of each axis was generated by stepwise mechanism with two piezo actuators. The resolution to drive the axis was $0.05{\mu}m$ and position accuracy less than $2{\mu}m$ was assured. From the positioning experiment, piezo feed mechanism is good enough for the micro machine tools. Many fuming experiments were carried out with diamond-cutting tools to evaluate cutting capability of a machine tool. Continuous flow type chip could be obtained even if the cutting speed was very low due to small diameter of workpiece. However, thorough investigation about machineability in micro/meso cutting is inevitable to assure high quality surface roughness in micro machine tool.

  • This paper presents a practical method of measuring the cutting force milling process by sensing the feed-drive servo motor current, avoiding the use of a dynamomenter. The relation between the cutting force and the servo motor currents is obtained after the feed-drive system of machining center is modelled. In order to measure the cutting force indirectly, the cutting force in the feed-drive system is regrared as a disturbance, and a disturbance estimator is designed using Kalman filter. A horizontal type machining center is used in the experimental study. A comparison is made between the cutting force measured from the dynamometer and the servo motor current.
