  • The solidification sequence and formation of intermetallic phase of Fe-rich Al-Si-Cu alloy were investigated by using real-time imaging of synchrotron X-ray radiation. Effects of cooling rate during uni-directional solidification on the resultant solidification behavior was also studied in a specially constructed vacuum chamber in the SPring-8 facility. The series of radiographic images were complementarily analyzed with conventional analysis of OM and SEM/EDX for phase identification. Detailed solidification sequence and formation mechanisms of various phases were discussed based on real-time image analysis. The growth rates of $\alpha$-AlFeMnSi and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ were measured in order to understand the growth behavior of each phase. It is suggested that real-time imaging technique can be a powerful tool for the precise understanding of solidification behavior of various industrial materials.

  • Addition of Ca element and nonequilibrium heat treatment which promotes shape modification of eutectic Si and ${\beta}$ intermetallic compound were conducted to improve the mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu alloy. Modification of eutectic Si and dissolution of needle-shape ${\beta}$ intermetallic compounds were possible by nonequilibrium heat treatment in which specimens were held at $505^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in Al-Si-Cu alloy with Fe. Owing to the decrease in aspect ratio of eutectic Si by the heat treatment of the alloy with 0.33wt.% Fe, the increase in elongation was prominent to be more than double that in the as-cast specimen. Dissolution of needle-shape ${\beta}$ intermetallic compounds in the alloy with 0.85wt.% Fe led to the improvement of tensile strength as the length of ${\beta}$ compounds decreased to 50%.

  • Medium carbon steel was aluminized by hot dipping into molten Al or Al-1%Si baths. After hot-dipping in these baths, a thin Al-rich topcoat and a thick alloy layer rich in $Al_5Fe_2$ formed on the surface. A small a mount of FeAl and $Al_3Fe$ was incorporated in the alloy layer. Silicon from the Al-1%Si bath was uniformly distributed throughout the entire coating. The hot dipping increased the microhardness of the steel by about 8 times. Heating at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ however decreased the microhardness through interdiffusion between the coating and the substrate. The oxidation at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ in air formed a thin protective ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer, which provided good oxidation resistance. Silicon was oxidized to amorphous silica, exhibiting a glassy oxide surface.

  • The main purpose of this paper was to investigate the change of rapidly solidified microstructures and dispersoid behavior according to heat-treatment in the Al-Fe-V-Si-(Mn) alloys. It was found that (111) preferred orientation identified by X-ray diffraction and fine subgrain/large grain were observed in the rapidly solidified Al-Fe-V-Si-(Mn) alloys. Cell boundary of the zone A was composed of the microcrystalline, whereas that of the zone B was amorphous. Decomposition of the Al-Fe-V-Si-(Mn) alloys occurred at about $300^{\circ}C$. These alloys exhibited excellent thermal stability at the elevated temperature. Microstructure of the zone B was more stable than that of the zone A. The spherical dispersoid and 5-fold symmetry phase was also more thermally stable than the amorphous structure of cell boundary.

  • Coal-fired power plants emit various Particulate Matter(PM) at coal storage pile and ash landfill as well as the stack, and affect the surrounding environment. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray analyzer(FE-SEM/EDX) were used to develop identification factor and the physico-chemical analysis of PM emitted from a power plant. In this study, three samples of pulverized coal, bottom ash, and fly ash were analyzed. The pulverized coal was spherical particles in shape and the chemical composition of C-O-Si-Al and C/Si and C/Al ratios were 200~300 on average. The bottom ash was spherical or non-spherical particles in shape, chemical composition was O-C-Si-Al-Fe-Ca and C/Si and C/Al ratios were $4.3{\pm}4.6$ and $8.8{\pm}10.0$. The fly ash was spherical particles in shape, chemical composition was O-Si-Ai-C-Fe-Ca and C/Si and C/Al ratios were $0.5{\pm}0.2$ and $0.8{\pm}0.5$.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the diffusion behavior of Al and Si from a coatings in the microstucture of Fe-Si steel. Steel samples deposited with Al-Si alloy are prepared by ion plating process, followed by annealing treatments for diffusion at $1050^{\circ}C$. Several intermetallic phases are found in the coatings and they are identified as Fe-Al and an orderd Fe-Si compounds. Series of different concentration profiles through the sample have been obtained and Si content reaches about 5 wt% in case of 90 minutes of diffusion time.

  • The effects of B additions, alone or in combination with Si, on the microstructure, $DO_3{\rightleftharpoons}B2$ transition temperature($T_c$) and corrosion behavior of Fe-25at%Al alloys were investigated. The raw materials were arc-melted in vacuum and then subjected to the following heat treatments to maximize the $DO_3$ order : homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 48hrs, slowly cooled to $500^{\circ}C$, and held at that temperature for 24hours. Results showed that the B addition to Fe-25at%Al alloys does indeed refine the grain and change from intergranular to transgranular fracture mode at room temperature, indicating a strengthening of grain boundaries. The Fe-25at% Al-1at% B-3at% Si alloy showed the highest $T_c$(${\Delta}T_c=150^{\circ}C$) in this work. However, the effectiveness of Si in raising $T_c$ decreased with more than 5at% Si additions combined with B. Since the preferential corrosion occurs at the precipitates, the corrosion resistance decreased due to the increased amount of precipitates with alloying additions.

  • Aenigmatite, $Na_4(Fe^{2+},Ti,Fe^{3+}){_{12}}(Fe^{3+},Si){_{12}}O_{40}$, is a common constituent of sodium-rich alkaline igneous rocks and is classified a an open-branched single-chain silicate. $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy of three natural aenigmatite specimens were done and the detailed crystal chemistry was obtained. Fitting of $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra led to the resolution of nine peaks. They consist of three doublets of $Fe^{2+}/oct$ and one merged peak at low velocity matching to two small peaks at high velocity which were assigned to $Fe^{3+}/tet\;and\;Fe^{2+}/oct$, respectively. Using the peak area for $Fe^{2+}\;and\;Fe^{3+}$ peaks, analytical data were recalculated. Precise assignment of $Fe^{2+}\;and\;Fe^{3+}$ ions in tetrahderal and octahedral sites revealed detailed crystal chemistry of aenigmatite. The existence of significant amounts of $Fe^{3+}/tet$ indicates that $Fe^{3+}$ has preference over $Al^{3+}$ for the tetrahedral sites. Crystal chemistry of aenigmatite (AEN1) yields the formula of $(Na_{3.97}Ca_{0.03})(Ca_{0.11}Mn_{0.59}Fe^{2+}{_{8.07}}Ti_{2.07}Mg_{0.70}Fe^{3+}{_{0.43}}Al_{0.04})(Fe^{3+}{_{0.56}}Al_{0.18}Si_{11.26})O_{40}$.

  • The Unsang gold deposit has been one of the three largest deposits (Daeyudong, Kwangyang) in Korea. The geology of this deposit consists of series of host rocks including Precambrian metasedimentary rock and Jurassic Porphyritic granite. The deposit consists of Au-bearing quartz veins which filled fractures along fault zones in Precambrian metasedimentary rock and Jurassic Porphyritic granite, which suggests that it is an orogenic-type deposit. Quartz veins are classified as 1) galena-quartz vein type, 2) pyrrhotite-quartz vein type, 3) pyrite-quartz vein type, 4) pegmatic quartz vein type, 5) muscovite-quartz vein type and 6) simple quartz vein type based on mineral assembles. The studied quartz vein is pyrite-quartz vein type which occurs as sericitization, chloritization and silicification. The white mica from stylolitic seams of laminated quartz vein occurs as fine or medium aggregate associated with white quartz, pyrite, chlorite, rutile, monazite, apatite, K-feldspar, zircon and calcite. The structural formular of white mica from laminated quartz vein is (K0.98-0.86Na0.02-0.00Ca0.01-0.00Ba0.01-0.00 Sr0.00)1.00-0.88(Al1.70-1.57Mg0.22-0.09Fe0.23-0.10Mn0.00Ti0.04-0.02Cr0.01-0.00V0.00Ni0.00)2.06-1.95 (Si3.38-3.17Al0.83-0.62)4.00O10(OH2.00-1.91F0.09-0.00)2.00. It indicated that white mica of laminated quartz vein has less K, Na and Ca, and more Si than theoretical dioctahedral micas. Compositional variations in white mica from laminated quartz vein are caused by phengitic or Tschermark substitution [(Al3+)VI+(Al3+)IV <-> (Fe2+ or Mg2+)VI+(Si4+)IV] and direct (Fe3+)VI <-> (Al3+)VI substitution. The structural formular of chlorite from laminated quartz vein is((Mg1.11-0.80Fe3.69-3.14Mn0.01-0.00Zn0.01-0.00K0.07-0.01Na0.01-0.00Ca0.04-0.01Al1.66-1.09)5.75-5.69 (Si3.49-2.96Al1.04-0.51)4.00O10 (OH)8. It indicated that chlorite of laminated quartz vein has more Si than theoretical chlorite. Compositional variations in chlorite from laminated quartz vein are caused by phengitic or Tschermark substitution (Al3+,VI+Al3+,IV <-> (Fe2+ or Mg2+)VI+(Si4+)IV) and octahedral Fe2+ <-> Mg2+ (Mn2+) substitution. Therefore, laminated quartz vein and alteration minerals of the Unsan Au deposit was formed during ductile shear stage of orogeny.
