  • The effects of Cr content and film formation potential on electronic behaviors of the passive film on Fe-Cr alloys were investigated in borate buffer solution. Influence of pH on passive films of both Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Mo alloys was also investigated. Mott-Schottky and cyclic voltammetry techniques were used to elucidate electronic behaviors of passive films and their electrochemical characteristics. AES analysis of passive films was carried out. Results showed that doping density decreased as Cr content and film formation potentials increased. The addition of Mo to Fe-Cr alloy had little influence on donor densities in pH 9.2 solution but some effects on the decrease in donor densities in pH 1.6 acidic solution.

  • Nitrided compound layer and diffusion layer structure were observed by SEM. The compound layer and the constituent of nitrided surface of STS 304, STS 316, STS 410 and SACM 645 steel were analysed using EMPA and XRD respectively. The depth of nitriding layer that is obtained from similar nitriding condition decrease in the order of SACM 645 > STS 410 > STS 316 > STS 304. Result of phase transformation of the nitrided at $550^{\circ}C$ by XRD analysis were as follows; The austenitic stainless steel was mainly consist of $Cr_2N$ accompanying with $Fe_4N$ and $Fe_{2-3}N$ phase and martensitic stainless steel was mainly consist of present $Fe_{2-3}N+Cr_2N$ phase, but SACM 645 steel was $Fe_{2-3}N$ phase present only.

  • The T23 steel, whose composition was Fe-2.3%Cr-1.6%W, was arc-melted, and oxidized between $600^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 7 months. The amount of precipitates in the arc-melted microstructure was as large as 11.4 vol.%. The precipitates increased the oxidation rate of the arc-melted T23 steel. Owing to the low amount of Cr in the T23 steel, breakaway oxidation occurred after a few hours during oxidation above $700^{\circ}C$ in both arc-melted and as-received T23 steels. The scales that formed on arc-melted and as-received T23 steels were similar to each other. They consisted primarily of the outer $Fe_2O_3$ layer and the inner ($Fe_2O_3$, $FeCr_2O_4$)-mixed layer. The precipitates increased the microhardness and the oxidation rates.

  • A thin metal layer of molybdenum is placed between the conventional barrier layer and the stainless steel substrate for investigating the diffusion property of iron (Fe) atoms. In this study, the protection probability was confirmed by measuring the concentration of out-diffused Fe using a SIMS depth profile. The Fe concentration of chromium (Cr) barrier layer with 10 nm molybdenum (Mo) layer is 5 times lower than that of Cr barrier without the thin Mo layer. The insertion of a thin Mo metal layer between the barrier layer and the stainless steel substrate effectively protects the out-diffusion of Fe atoms.

  • Steel is generally not corrosion resistant to water with formation of non protective rusts on its surface. Rusts are composed of iron oxides such as $Fe_3O_4$, $\alpha-$, $\beta-$, $\gamma-$and ${\delta}-FeOOH$. However, steel, particularly weathering steel containing small amounts of Cu, Ni and Cr etc., shows good corrosion resistance against rural, industrial or marine environment. Its corrosion rate is exceedingly small as compared with that of carbon steel. According to the exposure test results undertaken in outdoor environments, the atmospheric corrosion rate for weathering steel is only 1 mm for a century. Atmospheric corrosion for steels proceeds under alternate dry and wet conditions. Dry condition is encountered on steel surface on fine or cloudy days, and wet condition is on rainy or snowy days. The reason why weathering steel shows superior atmospheric corrosion resistance is due to formation of corrosion protective rusts on its surface under very thin water layer. The protective rusts are usually composed of two layer rusts; the upper layer is ${\gamma}-FeOOH$ termed as lepidocrocite, and inner layer is nano-particle ${\alpha}-FeOOH$ termed as goethite. This paper is aimed at elucidating the atmospheric corrosion mechanism for steel in comparison with corrosion in bulky water environment by use of empirical data. The summary is as follows: 1. No corrosion protective rusts are formed on steel in bulky water. 2. Atmospheric corrosion for steel is the corrosion under wetting and drying conditions. Corrosion and passivation occur alternately on steel surface. Steel, particularly weathering steel with small amounts of alloying elements such as Cu, Ni and Cr etc. enhances forming corrosion protective rusts by passivation.

  • The effect of deformation temperature and manganes contents on the tensile properties of duplex stainless steels with the structure of both ferrite and austenite were investigate. For this investigation, Fe-19% Cr-5% Ni-4~8% Mn alloys were prepared. The result obtained from this experiment are summerized as follows. With decreasing deformation temperature, tensile strengths of duplex stainless steel increased. Elongation showd to be increased and then decreased after representing the highest value at specific temperature. Tensile properties of duplex stainless steel were controlled by TRIP behavior in this experimental range of austenite contents. Tensile strengths decreased with increasing Mn contents. With increasing Mn contents, elongation decreased in the high temperature region, but increased in the low temperature region. The peak temperature representing the maximum elongation were changed to low temperature and the width of peak appeared to be broaden with increasing Mn contents.

  • In the present study, oxidation behavior of 304 and 316 stainless steels was investigated. After solution treatment, specimens were polished up to $1{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ grade and then subjected to oxidation treatment in dry air. The range of temperature was used for oxidation treatment at $300^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and TEM was used for analyzing the components and structure of oxide film. Also, these results were compared with the results of ESCA and TG. According to the results of TEM analysis, it was found that Cr oxide film was formed on top of the surface after room temperature oxidation but amorphous Fe oxide was formed on top of the surface and polycrystalline $(Cr,Fe)_2O_3$ was formed below the amorphous Fe oxide layer after $500^{\circ}C$ oxidation treatment. The oxidized specimens at $500^{\circ}C$ showed that 316 stainless steel resists more strongly to grain and grain boundary oxidation than 304 stainless steel. These results suggested that Mo component resolved in 316 stainless steel matrix suppressed the formation of Cr carbide which may results in local Cr deplete area.

  • For a development purpose of thick metal / metal Graded-Boundary Materials(GBM), a basic research on the fabrication of Ni-Cr/steel GBM was carried out by a laser beam and its mechanical properties and thermal characteristics were investigated. In order to produce a compositionally graded boundary region between substrate steel and added Ni-Cr alloy, a series of surface alloying treatments was performed with a high power CO$_2$ laser beam. Ni-Cr sheet was placed on a low carbon steel plate(0.18%C), and then a CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated on the surface to produce a homogeneous alloyed layer. On this first surface-alloyed layer, another Ni-Cr sheet was placed and then the CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated again to produce second surface-alloyed layer. Sequential repetitions of laser surface alloying treatment 4 times resulted in a graded-boundary region with the thickness of about 1.4mm. Simultaneous concentration profiles of different kinds of alloying elements(Ni and Cr) showed from 42%Ni, 45%Cr and 13%Fe on surface region to 0%Ni, 0%Cr and 99%Fe in substrate region. Also a thermal conductivity gradient resulted in graded-region and its value changed from 0.03㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in surface region to 0.1㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in substrate region. Microstructural observation showed that any visible root porosities and solidification shrinkage cracks were not formed in graded region between alloyed layer and substrate region during rapid cooling.
