The $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}$ clusters with 2-, 3-, and 4-pyridinemethanethiolate (S2-Pic, S3-Pic, and S4-Pic, respectively) terminal ligands have been synthesized from the ligand substitution reaction of the $(^nBu_4N)_2[Fe_4S_4Cl_4]$ (I) cluster. The new $(^nBu_4N)_2[Fe_4S_4(SR)_4]$ (R = 2-Pic; II, 3-Pic; III, 4-Pic; IV) clusters were characterized by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Cluster II was crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 24.530 (5) $\AA$, b = 24.636(4) $\AA$, c = 21.762(4) $\AA$, ${\beta}=103.253(3)^{\circ}$, and Z = 8. The X-ray structure of II showed two unique 2:2 site-differentiated $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}$ clusters due to the bidentate-mode coordination by 2-pyridinemethanethiolate ligands. Cluster III was crystallized in the same monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 26.0740(18) $\AA$, b = 23.3195(16) $\AA$, c = 22.3720(15) $\AA$, ${\beta}=100.467(2)^{\circ}$, and Z = 8. The 3-pyridinemethanethiolate ligand of III was coordinated to the $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}$ core as a terminal mode. Cluster IV with 4-pyridinemethanethiolate ligands was found to have a similar structure to the cluster III. Fully reversible $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}/[Fe_4S_4]^+$ redox waves were observed from all three clusters by cyclic voltammetry measurement. The electrochemical potentials for the $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}/[Fe_4S_4]^+$ transition decreased in the order of II, III and IV, and the reduction potential changes by the ligands were explained based on the structural differences among the complexes. The complex III was reacted with sulfonium salt of $[PhMeSCH_2-p-C_6H_4CN](BF_4)$ in MeCN to test possible radical-involving reaction as a functional model of the [$Fe_4S_4$]-SAM (S-adenosylmethionine) cofactor. However, the isolated reaction products of 3-pyridinemethanethiolate-p-cyanobenzylsulfide and thioanisole suggested that the reaction followed an ionic mechanism and the products formed from the terminal ligand attack to the sulfonium.
Bilayers of soft NiFe (150 nm-420 nm) on hard Ni (150 nm) were prepared by electrodeposition. The process of magnetization reversal in the NiFe/Ni bilayers was then investigated. The hysteresis loop generated by a magnetization reversal of soft NiFe under a positive saturation state of a hard Ni layer shows a shift along the negative field axis, which is clear evidence for the exchange spring effect in the NiFe/Ni bilayers. The dependence of the coercive field $H_c$ and exchange bias field Hex on the thickness of the NiFe layer was also investigated. As the NiFe thickness increases from 150 nm to 420 nm, both $H_c$ and $H_{ex}$ decrease rapidly from $H_c$= 51.7 Oe and $H_{ex}$ = 12.2 Oe, and saturate to $H_c$ = 5.8 Oe and $H_{ex}$ = 3.5 Oe.
Microbial Fe (III) reduction is important for the biogeochemical cycle in the sediment of freshwater system. Also, the Fe (III) reducing mechanism make a model of oxidizing organic compounds and reducing toxic heavy metals, such as chrome or uranium. Thirty-seven strains which have Fe (III) reducing activity were isolated from sediments in lake Soyang and Chunho reservoir. The initial concentration of Fe (II) was the highest in sediments of lake Soyang. However, the highest Fe (III) reducing activity was shown in Chunho reservoir. All isolates were tested for Fe (III) reducing activity. Strains C2 and C3, which were isolated from sediments of Chunho reservoir, showed the highest activity. These strains were tested to see if they utilize various electron donors such as glucose, yeast extract, acetate, ethanol and toluene. Significantly, glucose and yeast extract were used as electron donors. Also these strains were conformed to use humid acid and nitrate as electron accepters. The 16S rRNA sequences of strains C2 and C3 were closely related to Aeromonas hydrophila with 95% similarity.
We present an experimental investigation of the superconducting transition temperatures, $T_c$, of superconductor/ferromagnet bilayers with varying the thickness of ferromagnetic layer. FeN was used for the ferromagnetic (F) layer, and NbN and Nb were used for the superconducting (S) layer. The results were obtained using three different-thickness series of the S layer of the S/F bilayers: NbN/FeN with NbN thickness, $d_{NbN}{\approx}9.3nm$ and $d_{NbN}{\approx}10nm$, and Nb/FeN with Nb thickness $d_{Nb}{\approx}15nm$. $T_c$ drops sharply with increasing thickness of the ferromagnetic layer, $d_{FeN}$, before maximal suppression of superconductivity at $d_{FeN}{\approx}6.3nm$ for $d_{NbN}{\approx}10nm$ and at $d_{FeN}{\approx}2.5nm$ for $d_{Nb}{\approx}15nm$, respectively. After shallow minimum of $T_c$, a weak $T_c$ oscillation was observed in NbN/FeN bilayers, but it was hardly observable in Nb/FeN bilayers.
The Fe-TM-C-N nanocrystalline films (TM : Hf, Zr and Nb) are investigated to examine the relation between microstructure and soft magnetic properties. In these films, as the atomic radius of TM element increases, $P_{N2}$ which was added to get good soft magnetic properties was decreased and the maximum value of the permeability shifted to the high Fe range in the composition diagram. The best soft magnetic properties achieved in these films are : Hc of 0.15 Oe, $\mu_{eff}$ of 7800 (1MHz) and $4{\pi}M_{s}$ of 17.5 kG in Fe-Hf-C-N film ; Hc of 0.06 Oe, $\mu_{eff}$ of 2750 (1MHz) and $4{\pi}M_{s}$ of 16.8 kG in Fe-Zr-C-N film and Hc of 0.31 Oe; $\mu_{eff}$ of 2100 (1MHz) and $4{\pi}M_{s}$ of 15.5 kG in Fe-Nb-C-N film. It was considered that the stronger the bonding force between TM and C(N), the finer TM(C,N) phase is precipitated and therefore, the finer $\alpha$-Fe grains are formed. The effective permeability of the Fe-Zr-C-N films and Fe-Nb-C-N films remains nearly constant up to 10 MHz.
Two solid solution-type phases has been experimentally found in the quaternary system Cu-Fe-Sn-S:$(Fe, Cu, Sn)_{1+x}$ and $Cu_{2-x}Fe_(1+x}SnS_4$. These solid solutions are stable around the CuS-FeS-SnS referecne plane in the composition tetrahedron. One is the sphalerite-type monosulfide solid solution which has a extensive stability range with varying degrees of sulfur/metal ratio 9.7-1.0/1.0. The other is tetrahedrite-type phase $Cu_{2-y)Fe_{1+y}SnS_4(y_{max}=0.4)$ which is stable along the $Cu_2FeSnS_4-FeS$ tie line, but shows no phase transformation in the subsolidus range and decomposes incongruently at the range of 835-862${\circ}C$, depending on the compositional variation. Particularly, the latter phase shows the characteristic superstructure reflections, indicating that it is a derivative of sphalerite structure. The stability field of these two sphalerite-type phases are defined on the basis of diffraction pattern and optical homogeneity of the synthetic materials at the temperature range of 700-400${\circ}C$.
The magnetic thin films can be prepared without vacuum process and under the low temperature ( < $100^{\circ}C$) by ferrite plating. We have performed ferrite plating of $Fe_{3-x}Mn_{x}O_4(x=0.0~0.023)$ films on glass plate at $80^{\circ}C$. We got the film $9000\AA$ in thickness, having a mirror-like luster. The composition parameter, x, in the $Fe_{3-x}Mn_{x}O_4$ films is much smaller then the corresponding on, x', in the reaction solution(x/x'=O.04). The saturation magnetization($M_{s}$) of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ ferrite film as measured by a VSM was $M_{s}$=480 emu/cc which agrees with $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ bulk samples.
Fe-TiC composite was fabricated from Fe and TiC powders by high-energy milling and subsequent spark-plasma sintering. The microstructure, particle size and phase of Fe-TiC composite powders were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction to evaluate the effect of milling conditions on the size and distribution of TiC particles in Fe matrix. TiC particle size decreased with milling time. The average TiC particle size of 38 nm was obtained after 60 minutes of milling at 1000 rpm. Prepared Fe-TiC powder mixture was densified by spark-plasma sintering. Sintered Fe-TiC compacts showed a relative density of 91.7~96.2%. The average TiC particle size of 150 nm was observed from the FE-SEM image. The microstructure, densification behavior, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness of Fe-TiC sintered compact were investigated.

High Temperature wear behavior of plasma sprayed ZrO$_2$ and MoS$_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ coatings were investigated for high temperature wear resistance applications. The MoS$_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ added powders containing 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 mol% of $MoS_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ for plasma spray were made by spray drying method. Wear test were performed at temperature ranges from room temperature to 600$\circ$C. The microstructural change of coatings and the worn. surface were examined by SEM and XRD. In ZrO$_2$ coating, the coefficient of friction and wear amount of room temperature to 400$\circ$C was increased with temperature and decreased with temperature over 400$\circ$C. The coefficient of friction and wear amount of MoS$_2$ added coatings were increased with temperature, but those of $Fe_2O_3$ added coatings had lower coefficient of friction and higher wear resistance than ZrO$_2$ coating.
The effects of titanium ions on the crystallographic and spin-rotation transitions in iron sulfide have been examined by M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range of 78 to 600 K. It is noted that the titanium impurity of $Ti_{0.02}Fe_{0.98}S$ affects both the crystallographic and spin-rotation transitions of the iron sulfide. 2% impurity of $Ti^{2+}$ in FeS causes the increase in the difference between the spin rotation and ${\alpha}$ transition temperature by as much as 10 K compared with that for FeS. Both 1c and 2c structures coexist in the range between the ${\alpha}$ transition temperature and approximately 26 K, with a smaller hyperfine field corresponding to the 1c structure. The spin-rotation temperature for $Ti_{0.02}Fe_{0.98}S$ was measured to be 365 K, which is 10 K lower than the ${\alpha}$ transition temperature. By the 2% impurity of $Ti^{2+}$ in FeS the N$\'{e}$el temperature appreciably is not affected.
