Morphology and Surface Magnetism of Ultrathin Fe Films on Pd(111)

  • In situ surface magneto-optic Kerr effect(SMOKE), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and low energy electron diffraction(LEED) were used to study magnetic and structural properties of ultrathin Fe films grown on the Pd(111) surface. The SMOKE measurement showed strong enhancement of ferromagnetism after proper annealing process. Simultaneous changes in morphology was checked by LEED and XPS. After room temperature Fe deposition. longitudinal magnetization appeared above a critical thickness between 2.0 and 2.5 monolayers. When annealed at 450K, 2.0 monolayer Fe film exhibited boty longitudinal and polar magnetizations while 3.0 and 5.5 monolayer films showed little changes. After annealing at 600K, both magnetizations were totally destroyed in 2.0 monolayer film, but longitudinal magnetization was enhanced in 3.0 monolayer film. In the case of 5.5 monolayer film, it was only after 660K annealing that the enhancement of the longitudinal magnetization was observed. It was concluded that the surface flatness and the amount of intermixing were critical in the development of surface magnetism of this system.

External Magnetic Field Influence on Exchange Coupling Oscillations in Ultrathin Fe/Au/Tb Film Structures

  • In the present work exchange coupling between ultrathin Fe ($8{\AA}$) and Tb ($12{\AA}$) layers separated by Au spacer of varied thickness ($3-20{\AA}$) was studied. Anomalous Hall effect measurements showed weakly damped oscillating dependence of the Hall conductivity as a function of Au spacer thickness. Disagreement of the observed damping with the RKKY model of interlayer exchange coupling was explained by the influence of external magnetic field on the behaviour of exchange coupling oscillations. It was confirmed by Hall-like effect measurements at zero applied magnetic field and also illustrated by corresponding estimations.

Correlation between Ferromagnetic State and Thermally Stable Layer of Fe on the W(001) Surface

  • The variations of electronic and magnetic properties of ultrathin Fe overlayers on a W(001) surface as a function of Fe film thickness (1.0~4.0 ML) has been investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in conjunction with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). We found that the ferromagnetic property of Fe film started to build up over 2.0 ML, as we confirmed the spin and angular moment contribution to the magnetic moment using XMCD experiments. We will systematically demonstrate that the occurrence of ferromagnetic property of Fe film on a W(001) surface is closely correlated to a themally stable layer of Fe film on a W(001) surface.

  • The epitaxial growth of MgO film on Fe(001) has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). After confirming the clean Fe(001)-c($2{\times}2$) substrate by STM, Mg was deposited at room temperature (RT) under $O_2$ partial pressure of $10^{-7}\;Torr$. The MgO was grown as clusters, not as an epilayer even after postannealing at $400^{\circ}C$, as shown in Figure (a). On the contrary, when Mg was deposited on Fe(001)-c($2{\times}2$) at RT and post-oxidized through exposing $O_2$ at partial pressure $10^{-7}\;Torr$, the thin-layered film with some clusters was formed. Extended-annealing at $400^{\circ}C$ reduced the cluster density, and finally the single and epitaxial MgO-c($2{\times}2$) film was formed on Fe(001)-c($2{\times}2$) as shown in Figure (b). This ultrathin MgO film formed on Fe is expected to be applied to many technological applications, such as catalysis, microelectronics, and magnetic devices.

Pt(111) 표면 위에 증착된 Fe 초박막의 산소 흡착에 관한 연구 (Oxygen Chemisorption on the Fe Ultrathin Films on Pt(111) Surface)

  • 내각준위 X선 광전자 분광법을 이용하여 Pt(111) 표면 위에 증착된 Fe 초박막의 산소 흡착에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 6개 단층 이하의 두께를 갖는 Fe 초박막을 상온에서 산소에 노출시켜 산소 원자가 화학흡착된 것을 확인하고, 후열처리 과정에 따른 탈착 및 Fe층의 변화를 살펴보았다. 흡착된 산소 원자는 $600{\sim}700K$에서 부분적으로 탈착되고, 700 K 이상에서 Fe 원자들이 Pt 기판 안으로 섞여 들어감을 내각준위 스펙트럼 세기들로부터 알 수 있었다. Fe 원자들과 Pt 원자들 간의 섞임은 산소가 흡착되지 않은 경우와 거의 동일한 경향을 보였으며, 섞임에 의한 Fe-Pt 합금의 형성은 Fe $2p_{3/2}$ 광전자 스펙트럼의 속박에너지의 변화로부터 확인할 수 있었다. 탈착되지 않고 남은 산소의 양은 전체의 1/2로서 속박에너지가 $600{\sim}700K$ 사이에서 탈착된 산소보다 약 1.3 eV 커서 Fe층 위에 흡착된 산소들과는 다른 상임을 알 수 있었다. 이들 산소 원자는 1000 K에서야 탈착되었다.

Ferroelectric P(VDF/TrFE) Copolymers in Low-Cost Non-Volatile Data Storage Applications

  • P(VDF/TrFE(72/28) ultrathin films were used in the fabrication of Metal-Ferroelectric polymer-Metal (MFM) single bit device with special emphasis on uniform film surface, faster dipole switching time under applied external field and longer memory retention time. AFM and FTIR-GIRAS were complementary in analyzing surface crystalline morphology and the resultant change in chain orientation with varying thermal history. DC-EFM technique was used to 'write-read-erase' the data on the memory bit in a much faster time than P-E studies. The results obtained from this study will enable us to have a good understanding of the ferroelectric and piezoelectric behavior of P(VDF/TrFE)(72/28) thin films suitable for high density data storage applications.

Ga 극초박막의 계면특성과 초전도 물성제어에 대한 연구 (Interface Engineering in Superconducting Ultra-thin Film of Ga)

  • 비정질 Ga 박막은 벌크에 비해 높은 초전도 임계온도와 임계자기장 값을 보이나 그 특성은 불안정하여 상온에 한번 노출되면 그 초전도 특성을 잃어버리게 된다. 이 논문에서는 Ga/Al 두층 박막을 제작하여 이러한 비정질 Ga 박막의 불안정한 초전도 특성을 개선할 뿐만 아니라 기존의 스핀검출에 응용되고 있는 Al 박막을 대체할 수 있는 가능성을 연구하였다. 극초진공 분자빔박막 증착장비(UHV-MBE)를 사용하여 Ga/Al 두층 박막을 제작하고, 표면의 적절한 플라즈마 산화 처리에 의한 Ga/Al/$Al_2O_3$/Fe의 터널 접합구조를 제작하여 Ga/Al 박막의 초전도 특성을 측정하였다. 한편, Ga/Al 박막의 표면 특성은 Auger 전자 분광기를 이용하여 분석하였다.
