  • Micronesia is an island nation located north of Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean. A survey was conducted on Chuuk, which is one of the four main islands of Micronesia, from 11-25 Nov 2012. Echinoderms collected at one intertidal area as well as at 16 SCUBA diving points of 10-40 m depths in the subtidal zone were identified based on morphological characteristics. In total, 35 species from 165 individuals were identified: two crinoids, eight asteroids, four ophiuroids, seven echinoids, and 14 holothuroids. Among them, one asteroid, one ophiuroid, one echinoid, and two holothuroids were newly recorded from Micronesia.

  • Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) consists of six subfamilies, which are divided into three groups according to larval ecological habits (phytophagous, mycophagous, and zoophagous). The five basal subfamilies of Cecidomyiidae consist entirely of mycophagous species, with approximately 1500 species described worldwide and 29 previously known to occur in Korea. In this study, 37 named species (1 Lestremiinae, 29 Micromyinae, 4 Winnertziinae, and 3 Porricondylinae species) are newly reported from South Korea. We excluded Lestremia yasukunii Shinji from the list of Korean mycophagous cecidomyiids as it is a nomen nudum. Therefore, we herein officially recognize 65 species, 30 genera, and four subfamilies for the Korean mycophagous cecidomyiid fauna. We also provide diagnoses and photographs to aid species identification and discussion on the four years of gall midge taxonomic inventory in South Korea.

  • A faunistic list and distribution of aquatic beetles were given with two newly records, Copelatus parallelus Zimmermann, 1920 (family Dytiscidae) and Scirtes sobrinus Lewis, 1895 (family Scirtidae) from Nohwa and Bogil islands in South Korea. As a result, a total of 30 species belonging to 24 genera and eight families were recognized: 12 Dytiscidae species, eight Hydrophilidae species, three Haliplidae species, two Scirtidae species, two Gyrinidae species, one Noteridae species, one Elmidae species, and one Psephenidae species. Composition and habitus photographs of all collected aquatic beetles, habitats, and the diagnostic characters of C. parallelus and S. sobrinus are provided.

  • The Japanese codling fish, Physiculus japonica (family Moridae) is recorded as new to the Korean fish fauna. The specimen was fished from the South-Eastern waters off Jeju Island, Korea in March 1999. Standard length of the specimen was 343.2 mm, with a thin barbel on ower jaw, 67 soft second dorsal rays, 71 soft anal rays and 12 lateral-line above scales. Identification key of this specimen as P. japonica in the family Moridae was teethless vomer, chin barbel and well-developed black ventral light organ located on the anterior of anus. We give a new Korean name Dol-dae-gu for P. japonica.

  • The fish faeona of the Hyeongsan River was found to be as follows; 1. The study of fish fauna for this paper was achieved from May to August in 1978. 2. The collected cyprinid fishes from the Hyeongsan River are 13 species in 10 genera, i. e., Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus, Gnathopogon coreanus, Gnathopogon majimae, Pseudorasbora parve, Pungtungia herzi, Moroco oxycephalus, Moroco lagewskii, Triboledon hakenensis, Zacco platypus, Zacco temmincki, Rhodeus ocellatus and Pseudoperilampus uyekii. 3. Among them the 5 species, Pseudorasbora parva, Moroco oxycephalus, Zacco platypus, Rhodeus ocellatue and Pseudoperilampus uyekii, are first described from this river. 4. Zacco temmincki is a dominant species in the whole river and Moroco oxycephalus at the upper, Zacco temmincki at the middle and Carassius auratus at the lower part of the river are dominant species in each studied area. 5. The number of distributed cyprinid species in this river compared to the adjacent river basins is $43.3\%$ of the whole Nakdong River and $118.2\%$ of the Taewha River.

  • The branchiobdellidan species Holtodrilus truncatus (Liang, 1963) is reported for the first time in Korea. The genus Holtodrilus Gelder and Brinkhurst, 1990 is monotypic within the family Xironodrilidae, and the genus and family of this species are also new to the Korean fauna. The branchiobdellidan specimens were collected from the exoskeletons of the freshwater atyid shrimp, Neocaridina sp., sampled from the 'Andeok Valley', Jeju-do Province, South Korea. Holtodrilus truncatus is characterized by its terete body form, 7/7 dental formula (with a large medial tooth and three pairs of smaller lateral teeth), and no trunk appendages. In addition, we determined a partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene as a DNA barcode marker for H. truncatus. The present study is the first record of the branchiobdellidan occurrence on a non-crayfish host (shrimp) in Korea. To date, seven species (four genera in three families) of branchiobdellidans have been reported in the Korean fauna.

  • This study aims to clarify the diversity of bryozoans which were collected from Seogwipo waters in Jeju Island, Korea. A total of 78 species has been reported from Seogwipo waters so far. In the present study, 63 species were found from nine sites of Seogwipo waters from 2008 to 2012, including six newly added species to the Korean bryozoan fauna and twelve species new to Seogwipo waters. As a result of this study, the bryozoans from Seogwipo waters were turned out to be 96 species, 64 genera, 42 families, three orders and two classes.
