Fault Tolerant Attitude Control of a Spacecraft Using Two Wheels (두 개의 휠을 이용한 인공위성의 내고장 자세제어)

  • This paper considers a fault tolerant control problem for a spacecraft using wheels which are momentum exchanging devices. The control of a satellite with only two healthy wheels has been studied and its result has been presented. Two different configurations have been considered. When the yaw rate cannot be controlled directly by any control input, the desired yaw rate can be obtained by using the roll rate as a pseudo control. As a result, all three angular speeds have been stabilized, and two attitude angles including pitch and yaw have been controlled to converge to the desired values.

  • As the quantum volume increases, we are about to use quantum computers for real applications. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how much quantum-computational gain is achievable in the near future. In this work, we analyze a fault-tolerant quantum computing method for near-term applications such as the ground-state estimation problem. Based on quantitative analysis, we find that it is still necessary to improve the current fault-tolerant quantum computing. This work also discusses which parts should be improved to improve quantum computing performance.

A Study on Reliability Improvement of a Fault Tolerant Digital Governor (내고장성 디지털 조속기의 신뢰성 향상에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, fault tolerant digital governor is designed to realize ceaseless controlling and to improve the reliability of control system. Designed digital governor huts duplex I/O module and triplex CPU module and also 2 out of 3 voting algorithm and self diagnostic ability. The Processor module of the system(SIDG-3000) is developed based on 32 Bit industrial microprocessor, which guaranteed high quality of the module and SRAM for data also SRAM for command are separated. The process module also includes inter process communication function and power back up function (SRAM for back-up). System reliability is estimated by using the model of Markov process. It is shown that the reliability of triplex system in mission time can be dramatically improved compared with a single control system Designed digital governor system is applied after modelling of the steam turbine generator system of Buk-Cheju Thermal Power Plant. Simulation is carried out to prove the effectiveness of the designed digital governor system

  • This paper defines the quorum-based fault-tolerant mutual exclusion problem in a message-passing asynchronous system and determines a failure detector to solve the problem. This failure detector, which we call the modal failure detector star, and which we denote by $M^*$, is strictly weaker than the perfect failure detector P but strictly stronger than the eventually perfect failure detector ◇P. The paper shows that at any environment, the problem is solvable with $M^*$.

  • This paper presents a FTNCS (Fault-Tolerant Networked Control System) that can tolerate control surface failure and packet delay/loss in an UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). The proposed method utilizes the benefits of self-diagnosis by smart actuators along with the control allocation technique. A smart actuator is an intelligent actuation system combined with microprocessors to perform self-diagnosis and bi-directional communications. In the event of failure, the smart actuator provides the system supervisor with a set of actuator condition data. The system supervisor then compensate for the effect of faulty actuators by re-allocating redundant control surfaces based on the provided actuator condition data. In addition to the compensation of faulty actuators, the proposed FTNCS also includes an efficient algorithm to deal with network induced delay/packet loss. The proposed algorithm is based on a Lagrange polynomial interpolation method without any mathematical model of the system. Computer simulations with an UAV show that the proposed FTNCS can achieve a fast and accurate tracking performance even in the presence of actuator faults and network induced delays.

Fault-Tolerant Control of Cascaded H-Bridge Converters Using Double Zero-Sequence Voltage Injection and DC Voltage Optimization

  • Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) converters can be directly connected to medium-voltage grids without using transformers and they possess the advantages of large capacity and low harmonics. They are significant tools for providing grid connections in large-capacity renewable energy systems. However, the reliability of a grid-connected CHB converter can be seriously influenced by the number of power switching devices that exist in the structure. This paper proposes a fault-tolerant control strategy based on double zero-sequence voltage injection and DC voltage optimization to improve the reliability of star-connected CHB converters after one or more power units have been bypassed. By injecting double zero-sequence voltages into each phase cluster, the DC voltages of the healthy units can be rapidly balanced after the faulty units are bypassed. In addition, optimizing the DC voltage increases the number of faulty units that can be tolerated and improves the reliability of the converter. Simulations and experimental results are shown for a seven-level three-phase CHB converter to validate the efficiency and feasibility of this strategy.

  • In high reliability systems for industrial network such as railway signal system, fieldbus protocols have been known to satisfy the real-time and fault tolerant requirements. But, the application of fieldbus has been limited due to the high cost of hardware and software, and the difficulty in interfacing with multi-vendor products. Therefore, as an alternative to fieldbus, the computer network technology, especially Ethernet(IEEE 802.3), is being adapted to the industrial network. In this paper, we propose a switched Ethernet based railway signal system because of its very promising prospect for industrial application due to the elimination of uncertainties in the network operation. In addition, we propose the redundancy architecture for the reliability of network components. More specifically, this paper presents an analytical performance evaluation of switched Ethernet for railway signal system, and shows experimental evaluation of redundancy architecture.

  • This paper addresses some design issues for establishing the optimal number of spare units in array systems manufactured using fault-tolerant multichip modules(MCM's) for massively parallel computing(MPC). We propose a new quantitative approach to an optimal cost-effective MCM system design under yield and reliability constraints. In the proposed approach, we analyze the effect of residual redundancy on operational reliability of fault-tolerant MCM's. In particular, the issues of imperfect support circuitry, chip assembly yield and array topology are investigated. Extensive parametric results for the analysis are provided to show that our scheme can be applied to design ways using MCM's for MPC applications more efficiently, subject to yield and reliability constraints.

Efficient Fault-Recovery Technique for CGRA-based Multi-Core Architecture

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient fault-recovery technique for CGRA (Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture) based multi-core architecture. The proposed technique is intra/inter-CGRA co-reconfiguration technique based on a ring-based sharing fabric (RSF) and it enables exploiting the inherent redundancy and reconfigurability of the multi-CGRA for fault-recovery. Experimental results show that the proposed approaches achieve up to 73% fault recoverability when compared with completely connected fabric (CCF).
