  • Induction motors are a critical component of many industrial processes and are frequently integrated in commercially available equipment. Safety, reliability, efficiency, and performance are some of the major concerns of induction motor applications. Preventive maintenance of induction motors has been a topic great interest to industry because of their wide range application of industry. Since the use of mechanical sensors, such as vibration probes, strain gauges, and accelerometers is often impractical, the motor current signature analysis (MACA) techniques have gained murk popularity as diagnostic tool. Fault tolerant control (FTC) strives to make the system stable and retain acceptable performance under the system faults. All present FTC method can be classified into two groups. The first group is based on fault detection and diagnostics (FDD). The second group is independent of FDD and includes methods such as integrity control, reliable stabilization and simultaneous stabilization. This paper presents the fundamental FDD-based FTC methods, which are capable of on-line detection and diagnose of the induction motors. Therefore, our group has developed the embedded distributed fault tolerant and fault diagnosis system for industrial motor. This paper presents its architecture. These mechanisms are based on two 32-bit DSPs and each TMS320F2407 DSP module is checking stator current, voltage, temperatures, vibration and speed of the motor. The DSPs share information from each sensor or DSP through DPRAM with hardware implemented semaphore. And it communicates the motor status through field bus (CAN, RS485). From the designed system, we get primitive sensors data for the case of normal condition and two abnormal conditions of 3 phase induction motor control system is implemented. This paper is the first step to drive multi-motors with serial communication which can satisfy the real time operation using CAN protocol.

  • This paper proposes a corrective control system to achieve fault-tolerant control for input/output asynchronous sequential circuits vulnerable to transient faults violating fundamental mode operations. To overcome non-fundamental mode faults occurring in transient transitions of asynchronous sequential circuits, it is necessary to determine the end of unauthorized state transitions caused by the faults and to stably take the circuit from the faulty state to a desired state that is output equivalent with the normal next stable state. We address the existence condition for a proper output-feedback corrective controller that achieves fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control for these non-fundamental mode faults. The corrective controller and asynchronous sequential circuit are implemented on field-programming gate array to demonstrate the synthesis procedure and applicability of the proposed control scheme.

  • The position sensors used in a magnetic bearing system are desirable to provide some degree of fault-tolerance as the rotor position is necessary for the feedback control to overcome the open-loop instability. In this paper, we propose an inductive position sensor that can cope with a partial fault in the sensor. The sensor has multiple poles which can be combined to sense the in-plane motion of the rotor. When a high-frequency voltage signal drives each pole of the sensor, the resulting current in the sensor coil contains information regarding the rotor position. The signal processing circuit of the sensor extracts this position information. In this paper, we used the magnetic circuit model of the sensor that shows the analytical relationship between the sensor output and the rotor motion. The multi-polar structure of the sensor makes it possible to introduce redundancy which can be exploited for fault-tolerant operation. The proposed sensor is applied to a magnetically levitated turbo-molecular vacuum pump. Experimental results validate the fault-tolerance algorithm.

  • A major difficulty with the practical application of the multiple observer based IFDI schemes is the computational burden of the residual generation. In this paper, a new residual generator that employs function observers is proposed to reduce the computational burden, and the design methods of the IFDIS, equipped with the residual generator, are presented. The function observers employed in the residual generator can be considered as a dual of the unknown input (function) observer And it can be designed to estimate the measurement errors that are due to sensor faults. The error estimates are further processed to generate the residuals by which reliable fault detection/isolation result car be obtained. The proposed scheme is more useful, in real-time application, than any other multiple state observer based IFDISs. It can be effectively applied to fault tolerant control because the failure effects can be compensated by the use of the estimates of measurement errors. The proposed IFDI scheme is applied to an inverted pendulum control system for the IFDI of failed sensor and fault compensation.

  • Computer center of university or company manages many non fault-tolerant servers and network devices to spare expenses. Because a service fault occurs sometimes by worm virus, system bug etc, we need a technique to detect it for continuing service. This paper introduces design and implementation of the system to observe many heterogeneous services, and web-based interface improving convenience of system manager. A system fault is reported to system managers via email or SMS by introduced service observation system, not service user. Then system managers can recover the system fault by this notification and minimize a fault period.

  • In this paper, we applied the forward and backward error recovery techniques to a reduced instruction set computer (risc) processor to develop two fault-tolerant processors, namely, fetch redundant risc (FRR) processor and a redundancy execute risc (RER) processor. To evaluate the fault-tolerance capability of three target processors, we developed the base risc processor, FRR processor, and RER processor in SystemC hardware description language. We performed fault injection experiment using the three SystemC processor models and the SystemC-based simulation fault injection technique. From the experiments, for the 1-bit transient fault, the failure rate of the FRR, RER, and base risc processor were 1%, 2.8%, and 8.9%, respectively. For the 1-bit permanent fault, the failure rate of the FRR, RER, and base risc processor were 4.3%, 6.5%, and 41%, respectively. As a result, for 1-bit fault, we found that the FRR processor is more reliable among three processors.

  • This paper presented a solution to encryption and decryption problem suffering data transmission error for encrypted message transmission. Block cypher algorithms experience avalanche effect that a single bit error in an encrypted message brings substantial error bits after decryption. The proposed fault tolerant scheme addresses this error avalanche effect exploiting a multi-dimensional data array shuffling process and an error correction code. The shuffling process is to simplify the error correction. The shuffling disperses error bits to many data arrays so that each n-bit data block may comprises only one error bit. Thereby, the error correction scheme can easily restore the one bit error in an n-bit data block. This scheme can be extended on larger data blocks.

  • 2-Dimensional Ring-banyan network is a high-performance fault-tolerant switching network using a deflection self-routing. The throughput of the switching network is better than that of Cyclic Banyan network under non-uniform traffic. In this paper, we present an analytic reliability analysis of the fault-tolerant switching network. We present the Mean-Time-to-Failure that is calculated by using probabilistic model. This model also takes into account a hardware complexity. In case of $16\;{\times}\;16$ size, the presented switching network is 1.275 times more reliable than Hui's switching network. And it is 1.510 times more reliable than Hui's network in case of $64\;{\times}\;64$ size.

  • This paper considers a fault tolerant control problem for a spacecraft using reaction wheels. Faults are assumed to be inherent to only actuators(reaction wheels) and a control algorithm to accommodate actuators' faults is proposed. An attitude control loop includes an angular velocity control loop. The time delay control method is used to make a spacecraft follow the command angular velocity and to accommodate actuators' faults. A stability condition for the proposed algorithm is derived and the performance is demonstrated by computer simulations.
