Supplemental passive dampers are widely employed to improve the structural performance of buildings under seismic excitations. Nevertheless, the added damping could be counter-productive if the axial forces induced by the damper reaction forces are not routed properly in the columns. A few researchers engaged to optimize the width-wise damper arrangement to improve the delivered path of the axial column forces. However, most of these studies are limited under the design-based seismic level and few of them has evaluated the collapse performance of buildings under strong earthquakes. In this paper, the strategic width-wise placement method of viscous dampers is explored regarding the building performance under collapse state. Two realistic steel buildings with different storeys are modelled and compared to explore higher mode effects. Each building is designed with four different damper arrangement scenarios based on a classic damper distribution method. Both a far-fault and a near-fault seismic environment are considered for the buildings. Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) is performed to evaluate the probability of collapse and the plastic mechanism of the retrofitted steel buildings.
Based on the inherent relationship between dc-bus voltage and grid feeding active power, two dc-bus voltage regulators with different references are adopted for a grid-connected PV inverter operating in both normal grid voltage mode and low grid voltage mode. In the proposed scheme, an additional dc-bus voltage regulator paralleled with maximum power point tracking controller is used to guarantee the reliability of the low voltage ride-through (LVRT) of the inverter. Unlike conventional LVRT strategies, the proposed strategy does not require detecting grid voltage sag fault in terms of realizing LVRT. Moreover, the developed method does not have switching operations. The proposed technique can also enhance the stability of a power system in case of varying environmental conditions during a low grid voltage period. The operation principle of the presented LVRT control strategy is presented in detail, together with the design guidelines for the key parameters. Finally, a 3 kW prototype is built to validate the feasibility of the proposed LVRT strategy.

In DC micro-grid system energy storage systems (ESS) are responsible for storing energy and balancing power. Also, control target of the bidirectional DC-DC converter(BDC) for ESS should be changed depending on the operating mode. During the grid connected mode, the BDC controls the battery current or voltage. When a grid fault occurs, the BDC should change the control target to regulate the DC-bus. The BDC with conventional control method may experience large transient state during the mode change. This paper proposes a control method of BDC for ESS. The proposed control method is able to provide autonomous and seamless mode transfer by a variable current limiter. To validate the proposed concept, simulation results using PSIM and experimental results from a 2kW prototype are provided.

Recently, Uninterruptible power supply(UPS) is spotlighted from concern about black out, due to reserve power problem caused by increased power consumption. When fault occurs on the grid, UPS system supplies power to loads instead of the grid. Also, it is an advantage of possible operation as Energy storage system(ESS). Bi-directional power control of AC/DC Pulse width modulation(PWM) converter is essential for grid-connected UPS system. And, mode transfer control has to be performed considering phase and dynamic characteristic under grid condition. In this paper, control of mode transfer and bi-directional power control of AC/DC PWM converter is proposed for UPS system. Also, it is verified by simulation and experimental results.

Correct and fast detection of a micro-grid (MG) islanding is essential to the MG since operation, control and protection of the MG depend on an operating mode i.e., an interconnected mode or an islanding mode. When islanding occurs, the frequency of the point of common coupling (PCC) is not the nominal frequency during the transient state owing to the frequency rise or drop of generators in the MG. Thus, the active and reactive power calculated by the frequency domain based method such as Fourier Transform might contain some errors. This paper proposes an islanding detection algorithm for the MG based on the instantaneous active and reactive powers delivered to the dedicated line in the time domain. During the islanding mode, the instantaneous active and reactive powers delivered to the dedicated line are constants, which depend on the voltage of the PCC and the impedance of the dedicated line. In this paper, the instantaneous active and reactive powers are calculated in the time domain and used to detect islanding. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various scenarios including islanding conditions, fault conditions and load variation using the PSCAD/EMTDC simulator. The results indicate that the algorithm successfully detects islanding for the MG.

In the age of industry 4.0, artificial intelligence is being widely used to realize machinery condition monitoring. Due to their excellent performance and the ability to handle large volumes of data, machine learning techniques have been applied to realize the fault diagnosis of different equipment. In this study, we performed the failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor by using deep learning and big data. Several tests were performed to identify the main failure mode of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, and it was noted that the capacitance reduced significantly over time due to overheating. To reflect the capacitance degradation behavior over time, we employed the Vanilla long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network architecture. The LSTM neural network has been demonstrated to achieve excellent long-term predictions. The prediction results and metrics of the LSTM and Vanilla LSTM models were examined and compared. The Vanilla LSTM outperformed the conventional LSTM in terms of the computational resources and time required to predict the capacitance degradation.

Bluetooth utilizes a symmetric key that is exchanged at the first pairing to establish a secure channel. There are four authentication modes which enables device authentication, Just work, Passkey Entry, Out of Band, and Numeric Comparison. Up to now, Just work has been considered as the authentication mode that is vulnerable to Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) Attack. In addition, it is possible to intentionally change any authentication mode to Just work mode, in order to succeed in MITM Attack under Just work mode. However, this kind of attacks have just worked under the assumption that users should not notice that authentication mode was changed. In this paper, We analyze the specification of Secure Simple Pairing, LE Legacy Pairing and LE Secure Connection Pairing. When using Passkey Entry mode on each approach, it seems the MITM attack is possible. Also it offers Passkey Entry MITM attack that does not require assumptions about the user's fault, because it isn't change verification process of the authentication mode unlike traditional attacks. We implement the proposed MITM attacks. Also we presents a scenario in which an attack can be exploited and a countermeasure.

It is shown that the do Bruijn graph (dBG) can be used as an architecture for interconnection network and a suitable structure for parallel computation. Recent works have classified dBG based routing algorithms into shortest path routing and fault tolerant routing but investigation into fault free shortest path (FFSP) on dBG has been non-existent. In addition, as the size of the network increase, more faults are to be expected and therefore shortest path dBG algorithms in fault free mode may not be suitable routing algorithms for real interconnection networks, which contain several failures. Furthermore, long fault free path may lead to high traffic, high delay time and low throughput. In this paper we investigate routing algorithms in the condition of existing failure, based on the Bidirectional do Bruijn graph (BdBG). Two FFSP routing algorithms are proposed. Then, the performances of the two algorithms are analyzed in terms of mean path lengths and discrete set mean sizes. Our study shows that the proposed algorithms can be one of the candidates for routing in real interconnection networks based on dBG.

Recently, the installation of energy storage systems (ESSs) that have a range of functions, such as power stabilization of renewable energy sources, demand control, and frequency regulation, has been increasing annually. On the other hand, since the fire accident of ESS occurred at Gochang Power Test Center in August 2017, 29 fire accidents with significant property losses have occurred, including the Gyeongsan substation and Kunsan PV power plant. Because these fire accidents of ESS are arisen regardless of the season and capacity of ESS, an analysis of the fault characteristics in ESS is required to confirm the causes of the fire accidents accurately and ensure the safety of the ESS. This paper proposes the modeling of ESS using PSCAD/EMTDC S/W to identify the fault characteristics and ensure the safety of the ESS. From the simulation results of fault characteristics based on various scenarios, it is clear that the insulation of ESS may be breakdown due to the largely occurring CMV (common mode voltage). Furthermore, the CMV between the PCS and battery can be reduced, and the insulation breakdown of ESS can be prevented if an SPD (surge protect device) is installed in the battery and PCS sides, respectively.

Many kinds of telemetry should be monitored to check the state of spacecraft and it leads the time consumption. However, it is very important to define the status of satellite in short time because the contact number and time of low earth orbit satellite is limited. Also, on-board fault management should be prepared for non-contact operation because of the sever space environment. In this paper, on-board and ground autonomous operation method for the safety enhancement is described. Immediate fault detection and response is possible in ground by explicit anomaly detection through satellite event and error information. Also, satellite operation assistant system is proposed for ground autonomy that collect event sequence in accordance with related telemetry and recommend or execute an appropriate action for abnormal state. Critical parameter monitoring method with checking rate, mode and threshold is developed for on-board autonomous fault management. If the value exceeds the limit, pre-defined command sequence is executed.
