About 40% of reactors in the world are being operated beyond design life or are approaching the end of their life cycle. During long-term operation, various degradation mechanisms occur. Fatigue caused by alternating operational stresses in terms of temperature or pressure change is an important damage mechanism in continued operation of nuclear power plants. To monitor the fatigue damage of components, Fatigue Monitoring System (FMS) has been installed. Most FMSs have used Green's Function Approach (GFA) to calculate the thermal stresses rapidly. However, if temperature-dependent material properties are used in a detailed FEM, there is a maximum peak stress discrepancy between a conventional GFA and a detailed FEM because constant material properties are used in a conventional method. Therefore, if a conventional method is used in the fatigue evaluation, thermal stresses for various operating cycles may be calculated incorrectly and it may lead to an unreliable estimation. So, in this paper, the modified GFA which can consider temperature-dependent material properties is proposed by using an artificial neural network and weight factor. To verify the proposed method, thermal stresses by the new method are compared with those by FEM. Finally, pros and cons of the new method as well as technical findings from the assessment are discussed.

The design of major industrial facilities for the prevention of fatigue failure is customarily done by defining a set of transients and performing a calculation of cumulative usage factor. However, sometimes, the inherent conservatism or lack of details as well as unanticipated transients in old plant may cause maintenance problems. Even though several famous on-line monitoring and diagnosis systems have been developed world-widely, in this paper, a new system fur fatigue monitoring and life evaluation of crane is proposed to reduce customizing effort and purchasing cost. With regard to the system, at first, comprehensive operating transient data has been acquired at critical locations of crane. The real-time data were classified, by using adaptive resonance theory that is one of typical artificial neural network, into representative stress groups. Then the each classified stress pattern was mapped to calculated cumulative usage factor in accordance with ASME procedure. Thereby, promising results were obtained fur the crane and it is believed that the developed system can be applicable to other major facilities extensively.
Recently, efficient operation and practical management of power plants have become important issues in the nuclear industry. In particular, typical aging parameters such as stress and cumulative usage factor should be determined accurately for continued operation of a nuclear power plant beyond design life. However, most of the major components have been designed via conservative codes based on a 2-D concept, which do not take into account exact boundary conditions and asymmetric geometries. The present paper aims to suggest an effective fatigue evaluation methodology that uses a prototype of the integrated model and its transfer functions. The validity of the integrated 3-D Finite Element (FE) model was proven by comparing the analysis results of individual FE models. Also, mechanical and thermal transfer functions, known as Green's functions, were developed for the integrated model with the standard step input. Finally, the stresses estimated from the transfer functions were compared with those obtained from detailed 3-D FE analyses results at critical locations of the major components. The usefulness of the proposed fatigue evaluation methodology can be maximized by combining it with an on-line monitoring system, and this combination, will enhance the continued operations of old nuclear power plants.

The traditional regulatory approach to managing pilots fatigue has been to prescribe limits on maximum daily, monthly, and yearly flight and duty hours, and require minimum breaks within and between duty periods. This approach comes from a long history of limits on working hours dating back to the industrial revolution. So, the Council of ICAO recently adopted International Commercial Air Transport regarding the development and implementation of fatigue risk management systems(FRMS). The FRMS can provide better safety outcomes than current prescriptive flight and duty regulations while allowing greater operational flexibility. This study aim to analyzing relative importance of pilots' fatigue factors in order to minimize pilots' fatigue-related safety risks. More researches regarding monitoring and managing fatigue, based upon scientific principles, are required in the future.
Exercise is beneficial to the body in some ways. It is vital for people who have heart problems to perform exercise according to their condition. This paper describes how an Android platform can provide early warnings of fatigue during wushu exercise using Photoplethysmography (PPG) signals. Using the data from a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope to detect heart rate, this study contributes an algorithm to determine a user's fatigue during wushu exercise. It sends vibration messages to the user's smartphone device when the heart rate exceeds the limit or is too fast during exercise. The heart rate monitoring system in the app records heart rate data in real-time while exercising. A simple pulse sensor and Android app can be used to monitor heart rate. This plug-in sensor measures heart rate based on photoplethysmography (PPG) signals during exercise. Pulse sensors can be easily inserted into the fingertip of the user. An embedded microcontroller detects the heart rate by connecting a pulse sensor transmitted via Bluetooth to the smartphone. In order to measure the impact of physical activity on heart rate, Wushu System tests are conducted using various factors, such as age, exercise speed, and duration. During testing, the Android app was found to detect heart rate with an accuracy of 95.3% and to warn the user when their heart rate rises to an abnormal level.

Recently, smart wearable devices for monitoring health status have been utilized as interest in health care has increased. In this paper, we developed a fatigue measurement system that works with smart wearable devices. Unlike physical fatigue that is restored when you take enough rest, mental fatigue can decrease the efficiency or concentration of work, so you can monitor your mental health status through measurements. This system provides the function to transmit the measured data from the smart wearable device to the smartphone and to calculate the mental fatigue. A fatigue index was developed to measure fatigue and expressed as a number from 1 to 5. In addition, the results of the fatigue calculation and the survey were compared with the results of the independent sample t-test. Therefore, this system will be used to help users manage their health efficiently.
Recently an electrochemical noise method (ENM) with three electrodes has gained attention as a corrosion monitoring system in chemical plants. So far a few studies have been carried out for localized corrosion and environmental cracking of chemical plant materials. In this paper the ENM system is briefly summarized. Then an application of ENM to general corrosion for chemical plant materials is described. The emphasis is focused upon the analysis of stress on the corrosion cracking process of austenitic stainless steel in 30% $MgCl_2$ aqueous solution and the corrosion fatigue crack initiation process of 12 Cr stainless steel in 3% NaCl aqueous solution by ENM. Finally future problems for ENM to monitor regarding corrosion and environmental cracking in chemical plants are discussed.
Wind monitoring system is an absolutely-required system for assessing a performance and fatigue load of the wind energy generator in an on-shore wind energy experimental research complex. It was implemented for the purpose of monitoring the wind information measured from a meteorological tower at the monitoring house and of utilizing the measured data for the performance assessment, by using the LabVIEW program. Then, by adding the performance assessment-related data acquired from the wind energy generator during the performance assessment and the data recorder for synchronizing the data of meteorological tower, the system was implemented. Because it transmitted the data by converting the output 'RS-232' of data logger which measures the wind condition into CAN protocol, the data error rate was minimized, This paper is intended to explain the developed wind data monitoring system.

Recently, based on the smart structure concept, optical fiber sensors have been increasingly applied to monitor the various engineering and civil structural components. Repairs based on adhesively bonded fiber reinforce composite patches are more structurally efficient and much less damaging to the parent structure than standard repairs based on mechanically fastened metallic patches. As a result of the high reinforcing efficiency of bonded patches fatigue cracks can be successfully repaired. However, when such repairs are applied to primary structures, it is needed to demonstrate that its loss can be immediately detected. This approach is based on the "smart patch" concept in which the patch system monitors its own health. The objective of this study is to evaluate the potentiality of application of transmission-type extrinsic Fabry-Perot optical fiber sensor (TEFPI) to the monitoring of crack growth behavior of composite patch repaired structures. The sensing system of TEFPI and the data reduction principle for the detection of crack detection are presented. Finally, experimental results from the tests of center-cracked-tension aluminum specimens repaired with bonded composite patch is presented and discussed.

As aircrafts are being operated at high altitude, wing structures experience various fatigue loadings under cryogenic environments. As a result, fatigue damage such as a crack could be develop that could eventually lead to a catastrophic failure. For this reason, fatigue damage monitoring is an important process to ensure efficient maintenance and safety of structures. To implement damage detection in real-world flight environments, a special cooling chamber was built. Inside the chamber, the temperature was maintained at the cryogenic temperature, and harmonic fatigue loading was given to a wing structure. In this study, piezoelectric active-sensing based guided waves were used to detect the fatigue damage. In particular, a beamforming technique was applied to efficiently measure the scattering wave caused by the fatigue damage. The system was used for detection, growth monitoring, and localization of a fatigue crack. In addition, a sensor diagnostic process was also applied to ensure the proper operation of piezoelectric sensors. Several experiments were implemented and the results of the experiments demonstrated that this process could efficiently detect damage in such an extreme environment.
