Fatigue crack growth and life is estimated by various fracture mechanical parameters but affected by load, material and environment. Fatigue character of component without surface notch cannot be e valuated by above-mentioned parameters due to microstructure of in-service material. Single fracture mechanical parameter or nondestructive parameter cannot predict fatigue damage in arbitrary boundary condition but multiple fracture mechanical parameters or nondestructive parameters can Fatigue crack growth modelling with three point representation scheme uses this merit but has limit on real-time monitoring. Therefore, this study shows fatigue damage model using backpropagatior. neural networks on the basis of X-ray half breadth ratio B/$B_o$ fractal dimension $D_f$ and fracture mechanical parameters can predict fatigue crack growth rate da/dN and cycle ratioN/$N_f$ at the same time within engineering estimated mean error(5%).
This study aims to establish a new methodological framework for the evaluation of the evolution of the reliability of plain concrete for pavement vs number of cycles under flexural fatigue loading. According to the framework, a new method calculating the reliability was proposed through probability simulation in order to describe a random accumulation of fatigue damage, which combines reliability theory, one-to-one probability density functions transformation technique, cumulative fatigue damage theory and Weibull distribution theory. Then the statistical analysis of flexural fatigue performance of cement concrete tested was carried out utilizing Weibull distribution. Ultimately, the reliability for the tested cement concrete was obtained by the proposed method. Results indicate that the stochastic evolution behavior of concrete materials under fatigue loading can be captured by the established framework. The flexural fatigue life data of concrete at different stress levels is well described utilizing the two-parameter Weibull distribution. The evolution of reliability for concrete materials tested in this study develops by three stages and may corresponds to develop stages of cracking. The proposed method may also be available for the analysis of degradation behaviors under non-fatigue conditions.
After measuring actual stress by two measurements(Dynamic Strain Meter, Histogram Recorder) on truss rail road bridge, we could perform time history analysis by 3-D beam element method on modelling bridge. And then, after analyzing bridge structure in static by 3-D modelling, we estimated degree of fatigue damage in main member, secondary member of tie zone, cutting area of base metal cross section for confirming the result. In case that the simulated stress is carried out on modeling bridge, most of those simulation mainly is performed by main members. But in real bridge fatigue damage problems generally caused by junctions, connections, joints in which especially local stress is activated. Therefore, in this paper actual stress on critical area was estimated through the analysis result by simulation. With this study, we can estimate the degree of fatigue damage from a safety point of view and comparative accuracy.
One of the failure modes observed in steel yield energy dissipating devices (SYEDs) excited by a strong earthquake would be the low-cycle fatigue failure. Fatigue cracks of a SYED are prone to initiate at the notch areas where stress concentration is usually occurred, which is demonstrated by the cyclic tests and analyses carried out for this study. Since the fatigue failure of SYEDs dramatically deteriorates their structural capacities, the thorough investigation on their fatigue life is usually required. To do this, sophisticated modeling with considering a time-consuming and complicate fracture mechanism is generally needed. This study makes an effort to investigate the low-cycle fatigue life of SYEDs predicted by a simplified method utilizing damage indices and fatigue prediction equations that are based on the plastic strain amplitudes obtained from typical finite element analyses. This study shows that the low-cycle fatigue failure of SYEDs predicted by the simplified method can be conservatively in good agreement with the test results of SYED specimens prepared for experimental validation.
Due to the escalation in hydrocarbon consumption, the offshore industry is now looking for advanced technology to be employed for deep sea exploration. Riser system is an integral part of floating structure used for such oil and gas extraction from deep water offering a system of drill twines and production tubing to spread the exploration well towards the ocean bed. Thus, the marine risers need to be precisely employed. The incorporation of the strengthening material, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) for deep and ultra-deep water riser has drawn extensive curiosity in offshore engineering as it might offer potential weight savings and improved durability. The design for FRP strengthening involves the local design for critical loads along with the global analysis under all possible nonlinearities and imposed loadings such as platform motion, gravity, buoyancy, wave force, hydrostatic pressure, current etc. for computing and evaluating critical situations. Finite element package, ABAQUS/AQUA is the competent tool to analyze the static and dynamic responses under the offshore hydrodynamic loads. The necessities in design and operating conditions are studied. The study includes describing the methodology, procedure of analysis and the local design of composite riser. The responses and fatigue damage characteristics of the risers are explored for the effects of FRP strengthening. A detail assessment on the technical expansion of strengthening riser has been outlined comprising the inquiry on its behavior. The enquiry exemplifies the strengthening of riser as very potential idea and suitable in marine structures to explore oil and gas in deep sea.
Wind-induced failure around screwed connections has been documented in roof and wall cladding systems made with steel sheet cold-formed panels during high wind events. Previous research has found that low cycle fatigue caused by stress concentration and fluctuating wind loads is responsible for most such failures. A dynamic load protocol was employed in this work to represent fatigue under wind effects. A finite element model and fatigue criteria were implemented and compared with laboratory experiments in order to predict the fatigue failure associated with fluctuating wind loads. Results are used to develop an analytical model which can be employed for the fatigue analysis of steel cold-formed cladding systems. Existing three dimensional fatigue criteria are implemented and correlated with fatigue damage observed on steel claddings. Parametric studies are used to formulate suitable yet simple fatigue criteria. Fatigue failure is predicted in different configurations of loads, types of connections, and thicknesses of steel folded plate cladding. The analytical model, which correlated with experimental results reported in a companion paper, was validated for the fatigue life prediction and failure mechanism of different connection types and thicknesses of cold-formed steel cladding.

The residual life expectancy of the container crane which has been operated more or less 39 years is examined carefully, especially on the boom structure. The basic load and load combination need to be considered for to analyse the boom structure. Various parts of container crane are modeled for to analyse stress, the deflection and the fatigue. Analysis results show that the boom is stable in the stress and deflection but the boom vertical member is over the fatigue life. The rail support beam and boom bottom chord are approximately near the fatigue life. Analysis results show that the residual life of rail support beam and the boom bottom chord would be 2.2 years and 6.8 years, respectively.
As an LNG carrier preserves and transports liquefied natural gas under minus $163^{\circ}C$, the cargo tank has to have sufficient hull strength against not only the wave loads but also against loads caused by loading and unloading and thermal expansion to keep the LNG safely. The main insulation types for a CCS are No.96 and Mark III from GTT for the membrane LNG carrier. Particularly, the invar membrane plate in No.96 is very thin and its connections could experience high local stresses owing to such dynamic loads. Therefore, it should be verified whether those connections have sufficient fatigue lives for the purpose of operation and maintenance. This research aims at performing fatigue analysis with 0.1 fatigue damage criteria for 40 years of design life to support new membrane CCS development using proper S-N curves and the associated finite element modeling technique for each connection and then propose a reasonable design methodology.
Chloride corrosion has become the main factor of reducing the service life of reinforced concrete structures. The object of this paper is to propose a theoretical model that predicts the service life of chloride-corrosive concrete under fatigue load. In the process of modeling, the concrete is divided into two parts, microcrack and matrix. Taking the variation of mcirocrack area caused by fatigue load into account, an equation of chloride diffusion coefficient under fatigue load is established, and then the predictive model is developed based on Fick's second law. This model has an analytic solution and is reasonable in comparison to previous studies. Finally, some factors (chloride diffusion coefficient, surface chloride concentration and fatigue parameter) are analyzed to further investigate this model. The results indicate: the time to pit-to-crack transition and time to crack growth should not be neglected when predicting service life of concrete in strong corrosive condition; the type of fatigue loads also has a great impact on lifetime of concrete. In generally, this model is convenient to predict service life of chloride-corrosive concrete with different water to cement ratio, under different corrosive condition and under different types of fatigue load.
Stress analysis of bogie frame by using the finite element method has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC (International Union of Railways) Code 615-4. Multiaxial fatigue damage models such as signed von Mises method and typical critical plane theories were reviewed, and multiaxial fatigue analysis program (MUFAP) has been developed. Fatigue analysis of bogie frame under multiaxial loading was performed by using MUFAP and finite element analysis results. The procedure developed in this study is considered to be useful for the life prediction in preliminary design stage of railway components under multiaxial loading conditions. 3-dimensional surface modeling, mesh generation and finite element analysis were performed by Pro-Engineer, MSC/PATRAN and MSC/NASTRAN, respectively, which were installed in engineering workstation.
