A study on the Fatigue Life Prediction Method of the Spot-welded Lap Joint (점용접이음재의 피로수명 예측기법에 관한 연구)

  • For reasonable fatigue design and estimation of fatigue durability considered fatigue strength and stiffness of the automotive body structure, many fatigue data must be insured according to the shapes, materials, and welding conditions of the spot welded lap joints. However, because it is actually difficult problem, there is need to establish a new method to be able to predict its fatigue life without any additional fatigue tests. Therefore, In order to improve such problems, in this study, the maximum stress function presenting the $\delta\sigma_{1max}―\delta P$ relation was defined form the relation between $\delta\sigma_{1max}-N_f$ and ${\delta}P-N_f$. By using the fatigue data on the IB type spot-welded lap joints previously obtained from the fatigue test results, fatigue life of the spot-welded lap joint previously obtained from the fatigue test results, fatigue life of the spot-welded lap joint having a certain dimension was tried to predict without any additional fatigue tests. And, its result was verified by ${\delta}P-$N_f$ curves. Obtained conclusion are as follows, 1) a maximum stress function considered the relation of the maximum principal stress, fatigue load, and the effects of geometrical factors of the IB type spot-welded lap joint was suggested. 2) the fatigue life predicted by the maximum principal stress function and the relation of $\delta\sigma_{1max}-N_f$ was well agreed with the fatigue life obtained through the actual fatigue test result. 3) the fatigue life of the IB type spot-welded lap joint having a certain dimension is able to be predicted without any additional fatigue tests from the fatigue life prediction method by the maximum principal stress function.

  • The purpose of this study is fatigue damage assessment for large sized casting parts (hub and mainframe) of the 3MW offshore wind turbine by computer simulation. Hub and mainframe durability assessment is necessary because wind turbine have to guarantee for 20 years. Fatigue life evaluation must be considered all of fatigue load conditions as the components are wind load transmission path. Palmgren-Miner linear damage accumulation hypothesis is applied for fatigue life estimation with stress-life approach. S-N curve for the spheroid graphite cast iron EN-GJS-400-18-LT is derived according to durability guidelines. Reduction factors were applied for survival probability, surface roughness, material quality and partial safety factor according to Germanischer Lloyd rules. To calculate fatigue damage, stress tensors, extracted from the unity load calculation from ANSYS is multiplied with time track of fatigue loads extracted from GH bladed. Damage accumulation is performed with all of fatigue load conditions at each finite element nodes. In this study maximum nodal damage value is under 1.0. casted parts are safe.   • In order to ensure the structural integrity of nuclear welded structures during design life, the fatigue life has to be evaluated by fatigue analysis procedures presented in technical codes such as ASME B&PV Code Section III. However, existing fatigue analysis procedures do not explicitly consider the presence of welded joints. A new fatigue analysis procedure based on a structural stress/fracture mechanics approach has been recently developed in order to reduce conservatism by erasing uncertainty in the analysis procedure. A recent review of fatigue crack growth data under various mean loading conditions using the structural stress/fracture mechanics approach, does not consider the mean loading effect, revealed some significant discrepancies in fatigue crack growth curves according to the mean loading conditions. In this paper, we propose the use of the stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ characterized with loading ratio R effects in terms of the structural stress. We demonstrate the effectiveness in characterizing fatigue crack growth and S-N behavior using the well-known data. It was identified that the S-N data under high mean loading could be consolidated in a master S-N curve for welded joints.

Fatigue Design of Various Type Spot Welded Lap Joints Using the Maximum Stress

  • Recently, a new issue in designing spot welded structures such as automobile and train car bodies is to predict an economical fatigue design criterion. One of the most typical and traditional methods is to use a ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curve. However, since the fatigue data on the ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curve vary according to the welding conditions, materials, geometry of joint and fatigue loading conditions, it is necessary to perform the additional fatigue tests for determining a new fatigue design criterion of spot-welded lap joint having specific dimension and geometry. In this study, the stress distributions around spot welds of various spot welded lap joints such as in-plane bending type (IB type), tension shea. type (TS type) and cross tension type (CT type) were numerically analyzed. Using these results, the ΔP-N$\sub$f/ curves Previously obtained from the fatigue tests for each type were rearranged into the Δ$\sigma$-N$\sub$f/ relations with the maximum stresses at the nugget edge of the spot weld.

Fatigue Life Evaluation of Butt-Welded Tubular Joints

  • Recent deepwater offshore structures in the Gulf of Mexico utilize butt welded tubular joints. Application of a welded tubular joint includes tendons, production risers, and steel catenary risers. Fatigue life assessment of these joints becomes more critical, as the structures to which they are attached are allowed to undergo cyclic and sometimes large displacements around an anchored position. Estimation of the fatigue behavior of these tubular members in the design stage is generally condrcted by using S-N curves, as specified in the codeds and standards. Applying the stress concentration factor of the welded structure to the S-N approach often results in a very conservative assessment, because the stress field acting on the tubular has a non-uniform distribution through the thickness. Fatigue life analysis using fracture mechanics has been applied in the design of the catenary risers. This technology enables the engineer to establish proper requirements on weld quality and inspection acceptance criteria to assure satisfactory structural integrity during its design life. It also provides guidance on proper design curves and a methodology for accounting for the effects of non-uniform stress distribution through the wall thickness. Still, there is inconsistency when designing tubular joints using a conventional S-N approach and when specifying weld flaw acceptance criteria using fracture mechanics approach. This study developed fatigue curves that are consistent with both the S-N approach and the fracture mechanics approach. Accounting for non-uniform stress distribution and threshold stress intensity factor were key parameters in relating both approaches. A series of S-N curves, generated from the fracture mechanics approach, were compared to the existing S-N curves. For flat plate butt joint, the S-N curve generated from fracture mechanics matches with the IIW class 100 curve when initial crack depth was 0.5 mm (0.02 ). The new curves for tubular joint agree very well with the experimental results. The comparison also indicated the degree of conservatism built into the API X design curve.

  • Generally the life of die is limited by fatigue fracture or dimensional inaccuracy originated from wear. In this paper to predict the fatigue life of die the stress and strain histories of die can be predicted by the analysis of elastic-plastic finite element method and the elastic analysis of die during the process analysis of workpiece. Also the stress-life curve of die material can be obtained through experiment. With the above to재 facts we propose the analysis method of prediction fatigue life in die,. In the proposed model the analysis of elastic-plastic finite element method for material is carried out by using ABAQUS. Surface force resulted from the contacting border of the die and workpiece is transformed into the nodal force of die to implement elastic analysis. besides the proposed analysis model of die is applied to extrusion die and forging. die.

  • In the case of life prediction on the structures and machines after long service, it is natural to consider a degradation problems. Most of degradation data form practical structures are isolated data obtained at the time of periodical inspection or repair. From such data, it may be difficult to obtain the degradation curve available and necessary for life prediction. In this paper, for the purpose of obtaining a degradation curves, developed the simulate degradation method and fatigue test and Charpy impact test were conducted on the degraded, simulate degraded and recovered materials. Fatigue life prediction were conducted by using the relationship between fracture transition temperature (DBTT : vTrs) obtained from the Charpy impact test through the degradation process and fatigue crack growth constants of m and C obtained from the fatigue test.

  • Quantitative analysis have been carried out on the micro-cracks on the surface and into the depth of unnotched smooth mild steel specimen under cyclic stains by rotating bending fatigue tests. Some of the results are; (1) Cracks initiate at the early stage of fatigue life N$_{I}$/ N$_{f}$=10 to 20%, and propagate during the rest of fatigue life. (2) Coalescence of highly crowded small fatigue cracks of random distribution seems to induce the final fracture at higher stress level. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (4) The distributions of micro-surface crack length and depth show the composite Weibull distributions which are approximated to two straight lines separated by the value of transient region between stage I and stage II crack.k.k.

  • Big accidents of flyings, vessel, subways, gas equipments, buildings and bridge happens frenquently. Therefore many people are suffering harm of property. The destruction cause of macaine components is almost accused by fatigue. This study is test for STS304 specimen using pure and cantilever bending state. Rounded specimen and notched specimen including fracture surface investigation was comparatively experimented, fatigue life according to degree of surface finishing was examined. Fatigue fracture probability of notched canilever specimens were predicted by P-S-N curve, median rank and Weibull distribution. And at the relation with the rotational speed and stress, the fatigue life of the test specimen was higher at high speed than low speed.
