Assessment of Fatigue Crack Propagation Considering the Redistribution of Residual Stress due to Overload

  • For the assessment of the retardation of fatigue crack propagation behavior due to overload, new FE analysis algorithms considering compressive residual stress redistribution near crack tip was proposed in this paper. The size of plastic zone near crack tip was obtained by elasto-plastic analysis and it was compared with Irwin's equation. The amount of residual stress redistribution was assessed by subsequent elasto-plastic analysis, and the difference of residual stress distributions between constant amplitude load and overload was obtained. In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation, the applied SIF range was evaluated by ASTM E647, and the effect of residual stresses on crack propagation was considered using the effective SIF concept. The test results of crack propagations were compared with the predicted data obtained by the analysis.

  • SS41 material is welded automatically and is investigated some effects of the welding residual stress on the growth and propagation of fatigue crack, so as to study the fatigue behaviour in the welding residual stress field. The summarized results are as follows; 1) In case of the load amplitude is constant, as the stress ration is changing to 0.1, 0.33 and 0.5 the propagation life is constant but the initiation life decreases. And than, when maximum load or minimum load is constant, s the stress ration increases the initiation life and propagation life. 2) It was shown that the fatigue crack propagation ratio da/dn was almost constant regardless of the stress ratio change at constant load amplitude and that the larger stress ratio, the slower was the fatigue crack propagation ratio. 3) The opening ratio U is influenced by $K_{max}$ but it isn't only the function of $K_{max}$ because data range is very large. 4) The fatigue life of the specimens on tensile compressive residual stress field was decreased and increased respectably more than that of the base metal.

Effect of Specimen Thickness to Corrosion Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior of Structure Rolled Steel (일반구조용 압연강재의 부식피로균열전파거동에 미치는 시험편 두께의 영향)

  • In this paper, the corrosion fatigue crack propagation behavior of structure rolled steel (SWS 41C) was investigated by changing the thickness, and this experiment was done by the three point bending corrosion fatigue tester. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) As the thickness of specimen becomes thicker, the corrosion sensitivity to initial stage crack becomes some sensitive, and that the fatigue life becomes more sensitive. 2) The crack growth rate to initial stage crack (da/dN) was retarded as the thickness of specimen becomes thicker. But after initial stage crack, as the thickness of specimen is more thicker, da/dN is more rapid. 3) As the corrosion fatigue crack length grows, the accelerative factor of thick specimen (t=12mm) is more higher than that of thin specimen (t=6mm). 4) As the corrosion fatigue crack length grows, the corroson potential of both thick specimen and thin specimen becomes more less noble potential, however thick specimen (t=12mm) tends to more less noble potential than that of thin specimen(t=6mm).

  • Crack penetration behavior by fatigue crack propagation and measurements of AE before-and-after crack penetration were examined using SS41 steel plate. Experimental crack shape of SU type was in good agreement with calculated shape rather than S type. Crack propagation behavior on the front surface appears not to change markedly after penetration. However, crack growth on the back surface appears to accelerate as reported by author. As a crack propagates, AE occurred heavily just before penetration. Then, it decreases and crack is penetrating. A transition from plane strain to plane stress was observed by fractographic study. At this time, separation of fracture surface was shown which affects AE occurrence.

  • We propose the crack growth rate equation which will model fatigue crack growth rate behavior such that constant stress amplitude fatigue crack growth behavior can be predicted. Constant stress amplitude fatigue tests are conducted for four materials under three stress ratios of R=0.2, R=0.4 and R=0.6. Materials which have different mechanical properties i.e. stainless steel, low carbon steel, medium carbon steel and aluminum alloy are used. Through constant stress amplitude fatigue test by using unloading elastic compliance method, it is confirmed that crack closure is a close relationship with fatigue crack propagation. We describe simply fatigue crack propagation behavior as a function of the effective stress intensity factor range ($\Delta$ $K_{eff}$=U .$\Delta$K) for all three regions (threshold region, stable region). The fatigue crack growth rate equation is given by da / dN=A($\Delta$ $K_{eff}$­$\Delta$ $K_{o}$ )$^{m}$ / ($\Delta$ $K_{eff}$­$\Delta$K) Where, A and m are material constants, and $\Delta$ $K_{o}$ is stress intensity factor range at low $\Delta$K region. $K_{cf}$ is critical fatigue stress intensity factor.actor.

  • After the concept of fracture mechanics was applied to fatigue crack propagation by Paris. Paris' law is widely used to predict fatigue crack growth behavior. Since Elber proposed the effective stress intensity factor(SIF) and showed a good agreement with experimental results using the proposed SIF, emphasis in crack propagation studies has been placed on measuring the effective stress range ratio. This paper proposes a numerical model to simulate the crack closure and propagation behaviour under various loading spectrum. The validity of the proposed model is checked by comparing with the Toyosada numerical solutions on the crack propagation behaviour. Important insights developed are summarized.

  • The effect of different anisotropy and stress ratio on fatigue crack propagation behavior was investigated under various stress ratio(R=-0.4, -0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.4) using pure titanium sheet used in aerospace, chemical and food industry. The rack closure behavior under constant load amplitude fatigue crack propagation test was examined. Fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN was estimated in terms of effective stress intensity factor range, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$, regardless of various stress ratio but was influenced by anisotropy. Also, it was found that the effect of anisotropy was considerably decreased but still not negligible when he da/dN was evaluated by a conventional parameter, $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E and when the modified da/dN.$\sqrt{\varepsilon}_f$ was evaluated by $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E. On the other hand, da/dN could be evaluated uniquely by effective new parameter, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$/$sigma_{ys}$, regardless of anisotropy, as int he following equation da/dN=C''[\frac{{\Delta}K_{eff}}{{\sigma}_{ys}}]^{n''}. And effective stress intensity factor range ratio, U was estimated by the following equation with respect to the ratio of reversed plastic zone size, $\Delta r_{p}$ to monotonic plastic zone size, $r_p$ regardless of stress ratio and anisotropy.   • For the Tailor Welded Blank sheet used fur automobile body panel, the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation behavior were studied. The thickness of specimen was machined to be same (0.9+0.9mm) and different (0.9+2.0mm). As a base test, mechanical properties around welding zone were examined. The results indicated that there were no significant decreases in mechanical properties, but hardness around welding bead is 2.3 times greater than base material. The crack propagation rate was noticeably decreased around welding line and rapidly increased as it passed by welding line. Reviewing the shape of the crack propagation, crack width around welding line was wide around the welding zone due to retardation of crack growth, but it became narrow passing welding line due to decreased toughness. Elasto-Plastic analysis was performed by finite element analysis fur explaining the test results.

  • In this study, the mechanical behavious of a center crack which propagates between two holes in a panel are investigated. It is confirmed experimentally and analytically that a center crack stops and a small crack initiates from holes and propagates to fracture because of the compressive stress arising along the path of the fatigue crack propagation. Futhermore, it is noted that regardless of the configuration of the crack and the structure, Paris' law can be applied to the fatigue crack propagation.

  • An investigation of the crack propagation behavior of Al2O3-33Vol.% SiCw at 140$0^{\circ}C$ was conducted with various loading frequencies. Higher crack propagation was observed in lower frequency and higher load ratios. Interface sliding fracture due to glassy phase from the oxidation of SiCw and cavitation along grain boundary of diffusional creep appeared to be the main mechanism of fatigue fracture in slower crack propagation while interface sliding and whisker pull out aided by glassy phase formation played main role of fatigue fracture for higher crack growth condition. The frequency effect on deformation behavior was discussed with a Maxwell model.
