  • This study has been made to investigate into the behavior of fatigue limit, of fatigue crack initiation, and of fatigue crack propagation under the condition of rotating bending stress; specifically on the independency of stress field as well as the crack behavior of surface micro hole defect, which is made artificially through the specimen. The results obtained can be summarized as followa; 1) For the single micro hole defect, initiation of fatigue crack is occurred at both tips of microhole defect simultaneosly along the slip which are produced in the range of maximum principal stress arround micro hole defect independent of the size of micro hole defect. 2) For the neighbored deuble micro hole defects with equal size, in the range ($\frac{L}{r}$)ratio $\gtrsim$ 3 defined as the size of micro hole defect(2r) to the distance between the centers of micro hole defects (2L), the crack behavior of the micro hole defects is same as single one. However, for the range of $\frac{L}{r}$<3, the interference effect becomes significant as the ratio approaches to 1.

  • The shaft with the circular cross section has symmetric structural combination parts to keep the rotating balance. Hence the crack usually initiates from symmetric combination parts due to the stress concentration of these parts. In this study to estimate the fatigue behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed by using a rotary bending tester and the specimen with symmetric defects in circular cross section. The characteristics of crack initiation and propagation on the symmetric surface cracks in circular cross section were examined. We also observed the internal crack using the oxidation coloring method and investigated the fatigue behavior using the relationship between the surface crack and the internal crack. As a result, the fatigue life of symmetric cracks was reduced by 35% compared to that of a single crack. We examined the characteristics of fatigue behavior of elements with symmetric cracks using internal crack propagation rate and maximum stress intensity factor range that were obtained from an approximation method.

  • Practical structures are subject not only to tension but also to shear and torsional loading. Even under uniaxial loading, when the load is not perpendicular to the crack plane, mixed mode crack can occur. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading. In this study, the propagation behavior of the fatigue crack of the STS304 steels under mixed mode loading condition was investigated. The mode I and II stress intensity factors of CTS specimen were calculated using elastic finite element method with experimental results. The fatigue crack propagation under mixed mode was evaluated by the effective stress intensity factor proposed by Tanaka.

  • The effect of the welding for the offshore structure in the TMCP steel on the fatigue crack propagation rate and crack opening-and-closure behavior was examined. The welding anisotropy of the TMCP steel and crack propagation characteristics of the excessive loading were reviewed. (1) It seemed that a heat which was generated by the welding made a compressive residual stress over the base metal, so fatigue crack propagation rate was placed lower than in case of the base metal. (20 In the base metal, an effect of the anisotropy which has an effect of fatigue crack propagation rate of the excessive load and the constant amplitude laos was not found but in the welding material case, fatigue crack propagation rate of the excessive load in the specimen of the width direction was located in the retard side as compared with a specimen rolling direction. (3) A crack opening ratio of the used TMCP stel in this study was not changed after excessive loading but a retard phenomenon of crack propagation was observed. Consequently, it was thought that all of the retard phenomenon of crack propagation did not only a cause of the crack opening-and-closure phenomenon.

  • It is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior of rail steel under the multi-axial stress state to assure the railway vehicle's safety. For this purpose, the stress analysis to investigate the crack initiation criteria, static failure and fatigue behavior under mixed-mode are performed. The stress analysis results show that the initiation of the transverse fissure depends on the maximum shear stress below the surface. For the mixed mode, the fatigue crack growth behavior which is represented by the projection crack length and comparative S.I.F, ${\Delta}K_v$, shows the more conservative results. Also, its rate is lower than that of the case of the mode I, and this difference decreases with increasing the stress ratio, R.

  • Generally almost all fatigue crack growth is affected by mode I. For this reason a study on mode I has concentrated in the field of fracture mechanics. However the fatigue crack initiation and growth in machines and structures usually occur in mixed mode loading. If there is any relationship between the cause of fracture in mixed mode loading and fracture surface, fracture surface pattern will be the main mean explaining reasons of fatigue fracture and obtaining further information about fracture process. In this paper low point shear-fatigue test with Aluminum alloy hi 5083-O is carried out from this prospect and then the mixed mode distribution of fracture surface is examined from the result after identifying the generation of fatigue crack surface pattern. It was found from the experimental results that the fatigue crack surface pattern and the fatigue crack shear direction are remarkably consistent. Furthermore It is possible that the analysis of distribution of mixed mode through the fatigue crack surface pattern.

  • In this study, the effect of specimen thickness and stress ratio on fatigue crack growth in S45C steel was investigated. Acoustic emission was monitored during the fatigue crack growth test. Both crack closure and AE technique were used in assessing fatigue crack growth behavior. Constant amplitude loading tests were performed on CT type specimen with three different thicknesses and stress ratios. Crack closure was investigated to explain the influence of specimen thickness and stress ratio on the fatigue crack growth in the second growth region. The crack closure effect was decreased with specimen thickness and stress ratio.

  • Recently, with rapid increase of gas demand, there occurs much interest their security of safety in the gas storage tanks and pressure vessels etc. In order to solve the problems, the occurrence of corrosion fatigue crack and the propagation behavior must be investigated. Especially the occurrence of corrosion fatigue crack and the propagation behavior in the part which has concentrated stress or defects, must be studied more carefully. In this paper, the high-tensile steel of SPV 50 which is much used for building the LPG storage tanks was tested by the use of a plane bending corrosion fatigue tester under the various marine environments and in the air. These experiments were done to investigate the corrosion fatigue crack propagation behavior, the variation of aspect ratio for part through crack and electro-chemical characteristics of the metal. The main results obtained are as follows ; 1. Comparing the same surface crack length with the crack depth, the crack depth toward the thickness of specimen in air propagated faster than that in corrosion environment. 2. The aspect variation of the half elliptical crack can be estimated as following equation; b/a=i-jb/t where a : surface crack length, b : crack depth, t : specimen thickness, i,j : experimental constants but the slope j is decreased as specific resistance decreases. 3. As the specific resistance of corrosion environment decrease or the corrosion fatigue crack propagates, the corrosion potential become less noble.

  • The research trends for metal matrix composites have been on basic mechanical properties, fatigue behavior after aging and fractographic observations. In this study, the fatigue crack initiation as well as the fatigue crack growth behavior and the fracture mechanism were investigated through observations of the fracture surface on silicon carbide particles reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites(SiCp/Al). Based on the fractographic study done by scanning electron microscope and replica, crack growth path model and fracture mechanism are presented. The mechanical properties, such as the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of SiCp/Al composites are improved in a longitudinal direction, however, the fatigue life is shorter than the basic Al6061 alloys. From fractographic observations, it is found that the failure mode is ductile in basic Ai6061 alloys. And because some SiC particles were pulled out from the matrix and a few SiC particles could be seen on the fracture surface of SiCp/Al, crack growth paths are believed to follow the interface of the matrix and its particles.
