The influence of weld defect, residual stress and microstructure on the Low Cycle Fatigue(L. C. F.) behaviour of AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel weldment has been studied. The specimens were welded by shielded metal are welding process, post weld heat treated(PWHT) at 900.deg.C for 1.5hrs, and tested under total strain controlled condition at room temperature. The results of the experiment showed that weld defect affected the L.C.F. behaviour of weldment deleteriously compared to the residual stress or microstructure, and it reduced the L.C.F. life about 70-80%. The PWHT exhibited beneficial effect on the L.C.F. behaviour and increased the L.C.F. life about 120%. This enhancement by PWHT was attributed to the removal of residual stress and recovery of weld metal ductility. The cyclic stress flow of as welded specimens showed intermediate cyclic softening, whereas those of heat treated specimens showed continuous cyclic hardening, and this difference was explained in terms of the residual stress removal and dislocation behaviour. Scanning electron microscopy studies of fatigue fracture surface showed that weld defects of large size and near weld surface were detrimental to the L.C.F. behaviour of weldment.
Traditionally used analytical approach to predict the fatigue failure of reinforced concrete (RC) structure is generally conservative and has certain limitations. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) offers less expensive solution for fatigue analysis with sufficient accuracy. However, the conventional implicit dynamic analysis is very expensive for high level computation. Whereas, an explicit dynamic analysis approach offers a computationally operative modelling to predict true responses of a structural element under periodic loading and might be perfectly matched to accomplish long life fatigue computations. Hence, this study simulates the fatigue behaviour of RC beams with finite element (FE) assemblage presenting a simplified explicit dynamic numerical solution to show computer aided fatigue behaviour of RC beam. A commercial FEM package, ABAQUS has been chosen for this complex modelling. The concrete has been modelled as a 8-node solid element providing competent compression hardening and tension stiffening. The steel reinforcements are simulated as two-node truss elements comprising elasto-plastic stress-strain behaviour. All the possible nonlinearities are duly incorporated. Time domain analysis has been adopted through an automatic Newmark-β time incremental technique. The program consists of twelve RC beams to visualize the real behaviour during fatigue process and to obtain the reliability of the study. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate a redistribution of stresses along the time and damage accumulation of beam which severely affect the serviceability and ultimate capacity of RC beam. The output of the FEM analysis demonstrates good match with the experimental consequences which affirm the efficacy of the computer aided model. The controlled fatigue damage evolution at service fatigue load limits makes the FE model an efficient tool in predicting high cycle fatigue behaviour of RC structures.

The technique of fretting fatigue test was developed and fretting fatigue tests of A12024-T4 were conducted under several conditions. The newly developed calibration methods for measuring surface contact tractions showed good linearity and repeatability. The plate type specimen to which tow bridge type pads were attached and vision system was used to observe the crack behaviour. The oblieque cracks appeared in the early stage of crack growth and they became mode I cracks as they grow about 1 mm. The mode I transition points were found to be longer when surface tractions are higher or bulk stress is lower. Before the crack becomes mode I crack, 'well point' where crack grow about rate is minimum, was detected under every experimental condition. The crack behaviour was found to be affected by surface tractions, contact area, bulk stress. It was also found that partial slip and stick condition is most detrimental and the crack starts from the boundary of stick and slip. For gross slip crack started at the outside edge of pad. After crack mode transition, fretting fatigue cracks showed almost same behaviour of plain mode I fatigue cracks. Equivalent stress intensity factor was used to analyze the behaviour of fretting fatigue cracks and it was found that stress intensity factors can be applied to fretting fatigue cracks.
Fatigue crack growth behaviour of Ti-6A-4V alloy is investigated in air and salt solution environment at room temperature and $200^{\circ}C$. Fatigue crack growth rate is blown to be fast for the formation of corrosive product in hot salt environment. For the effect on corrosion fatigue crack growth behaviour of region II. fatigue crack growth rate in atmosphere had a little gap to both case, $200^{\circ}C$ and room temperature. However, it showed very fast tendency in salt corrosive atmosphere, and it was remarkably accelerated in $200^{\circ}C$ temperature salt environment. When $\Delta$K was approximately 30MPa(equation omitted), fatigue crack growth rate had a little difference between at room temperature and at $200^{\circ}C$ high temperature, however in case of salt corrosive environment the room temperature was 3.5 times Inter and $200^{\circ}C$ high temperature for 16 times than air environment respectively.
In this paper, the interfacial stress intensity factors( $K_{i}$= $K_1$+i $K_2$) for the edge interface crack in the dissimilar materials(isotropic-isotropic materials, isotropic-composite materials) were analysed by BEM(Boundary Element Method). The fatigue crack growth behaviour was investigated by load constant fatigue test. From the experimental results, the relationship between da/dN and interfacial stress intensity facto, ( $K_{i}$ or $K_1$) can be expressed by Paris'law for homogeneous materials.s.s.
The fatigue behaviour of six different hollow section T-joints subjected to out-of-plane bending moment was investigated experimentally using scaled steel models. The joints had circular brace members and rectangular chord members. Hot spot stresses and the stress concentration factors. (SCFs) were determined experimentally. Fatigue testing was carried out under constant amplitude loading in air. The test results have been statistically evaluated, and show that the experimental SCF values for circular-to-rectangular (CHS-to-RHS) hollow section joints were found to be below those of circular-to-circular (CHS-to-CHS) hollow section joints. The fatigue strength, referred to experimental hot spot stress, was in reasonably good agreement with referred fatigue design codes for tubular joints.

An elastic-plastic finite element analysis is performed to investigate detailed closure behaviour of fatigue cracks in residual stress fields and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. The finite element analysis performed under plane stress using contact elements can predict fatigue crack closure behaviour. The mesh of constant element size along crack surface can not predict the opening level of fatigue crack. Specially, the mesh of element sizes depending upon the reversed plastic zone size included the effect of crack opening point can precisely predict the opening level. By using the concept of the mesh of element sizes depending upon the reversed plastic zone size included the effect of crack opening point, the opening level of fatigue crack can be determined very well.

TMCP steel manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process is known to have extra-ordinary mechanical properties such as tensile strength and toughness. However, there is much uncertainty about the fatigue fracture characteristics of this steel. In this paper, the fatigue fracture behaviour of the TMCP steel in base metal and weldment were inspected through the Dynamic Implant test method. Those results were quantitavely compared with those of the ordinary normalized steel of same strength level. Moreover, the effect of the diffusible hydrogen included in the welded part on the fatigue fracture behaviour were made clear. As the experimental results, the fatigue fracture characteristics of the TMCP steel in case of base metal proved out to be superior to that of the normalized steel. However, the TMCP steel weldment including the diffusible hydrogen appeared to have inferior fatigue characteristics compared with the same conditioned normalized steel weldment.
The leak-before-break(LBB) design on the large structures such as ship's hull, tank structure, pressure vessels etc. is one of the most inportant subjects for the evaluation and the assurance of safety. In these structures, various loads are acting. In some structural members, therefore, out-of-plane stress due to bending often may become with in-plane stress due to stretching. In the present report, the characteristics of fatigue life and peneration behaviour from a surface cracked plate under combined tension and bending have been studied experimentally and analytically by using eccentricity. Estimation of fatigue crack growth was done with the Newman-Raju formula before penetration, and with the stress intensity factor after penetration proposed by the author. Calculated aspect ratio showed the good agreement with the experimental result. It was also found that particular crack growth behaviour and crack shape after penetration can be satisfactorily evaluated using the K solution proposed.
In this study, residual stresses of the weldment were calculated by finite element analysis(FEA) and experiment. And, the crack closure behaviour and fatigue crack growth characteristics in field of residual stress of A106 Gr B steel pipe weldment were investigated under various stress ratio. Obtained results are as follows. I) $K_{op}$ was independent of $K_{max}$, and load ratio in fatigue crack growth. 2) In variation of load ratio, the scatter band of crack growth curve was reduced by half considering crack closure. and 3) Neglecting crack closure behaviour, actual fatigue crack growth rate can be underestimated' and Actual fatigue crack growth rate can be overestimated by $K_{res}$, in tensile residual stress field.
