The current trend in the studies of the Role of the Father - Analysis on America and Japan - (아버지역할과 자녀양육에 관한 연구동향(I) -미국.일본을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this article is to document the trend in studies on the role of the father. A large number of studies on parent-child relationships have been focused on the nature of mother-child relationships. Since the 1970s, the role of the father has become an increasingly popular topic in the U.S and Japan. Why has the father's role been forgotten for such a long time\ulcorner Why is the father's role being rediscovered in recent years\ulcorner Does the father have significant impact on child's development\ulcorner This proper reviews these issues in terms of sociocultural background, trends, and future implications of the studies. A comparison and determinants analysis regarding the extent of father-child interaction, of the lather's behavior, and its effects on the child in the U.S and Japan is provided.

Correlations among male college students' perceptions of the degree of closeness to their fathers their fathers' paternal role and their own paternal role in the future (남자대학생의 친부에 대한 친밀도와 부성역할 지각 및 미래자기 부성역할 지각간의 상관관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data needed to examine the relationship between father and son by investigating correlations among male college students' perceptions of the degree of closeness to their fathers their fathers' paternal role and their own paternal role in the future. The subjects of this study were 474 male college students(sophomores juniors and seniors) from Seoul and Daegu. The questionaire the means of this research is composed of classified questions on related studies and on the researches of reference literatures, Statistical methods applied for data analysis were frequencies mean standard deviation Pearson's correlation. Major findings are as follows; 1) When a son perceives that he is on intimate terms with his father he perceives that his father performs paternal role well. Intimate relation between the father and the son can be considered essential to good performance of paternal role. 2)When a son perceives that he is on intimate terms w th his father he believes that he will perform his own paternal role will in the future. That is the son seems to accept his future paternal role positively as he feels close to his father. 3) Male college students who perceive their fathers' paternal role is properly performed tend to believe they will perform their own paternal role well in the future. Judging from the relation between fathers' performance of paternal role and sons' perception of thir future paternal role we can say good performance of paternal role is important is building up sons' affirmative perception of paternal role.

Men's Father-role in the Context of Family Friendly Environment (가족친화환경 측면에서 본 남성의 아버지역할 수행 실태)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the father-role in the context of Family-Friendly-Environment and to give the information for enhancing the father-role and balancing between work and family. Through the survey in February and March 2010 the data from 973 cases was collected. As a research method the frequency, percent proportion, mean, $X^2$ and Anova were used. From the data 'friendly father' was found as the most preferred father role. And we found the context of father-role was varied with the stage of children's age group. Also the need for the family-friendly program of Healthy-Families-Center was founded. This result was to be applicated for the educational program for fathers. So we proposed the educational program for the fathers in accordance with the developmental stage of children focused on the friendly father-role. In order to perform the friendly father role, more concert information and specific contents have to be developed.

A Cross-Cultural Study of Father's gender role attitudes and Father's Involvement Behaviors in Korea an Japan (한국과 일본 아버지의 성역할태도와 양육참여행동과의 비교연구)

  • This study in investigated differences between father's involvement Behavior perceived by their children which consisted of both qualitative and quantitative behavior and Father's gender role attitude in korea and Japan. The research sample consists of 240, 4-5th grade Korean children and their fathers and 215, 5-6th grade Japanese children and their fathers in Seoul and Tokyo respectively,. Results showed that (1) Korean fathers exhibited more affectionate child rearing behavior than Japanese fathers. On the other han Japanese father exhibited more father's involvement behavior than Korean fathers (2) Korean fathers tended to show more traditional gender role attitude than Japanese fathers do. (3) In the both countries father's affectionate child rearing behavior are greatly affected by non-traditional gender role attitude whereas father's involvement are affected by length of time the that fathers devot to child care.

Development of the Pre-father Education Program - Based on Developmental Approach and Narrative Therapeutic Perspective - (예비아버지 교육 프로그램의 개발 -발달적 접근과 이야기 치료적 관점을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a program which aims at providing a better understanding of parenthood, establishing a desirable value of being a parent and preparing for being a good father positively affecting children, and determine effects of the program on unmarried men who are in the so-called stage of 'not belonged youth'. The program consisted of 5 sessions titled 'My father, 'I will be a father, too', 'Being a good father I', 'Being a good father II' and 'I will be a respectable father'. 7 unmarried men surveyed here were asked to participate in the program held at B church located in Busan from Oct. 3 to Nov. 7, 2004, with 1 session a week and 120 minutes per session based. Before and after the program, tests were carried out with the father acceptance-rejection scale and the scale of confidence in father's role'. For each of the sessions, a process evaluation was performed. Results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, the pre- and post-tests with the father acceptance-rejection scale showed some changed recognition that father's attitude of child raising would be more acceptable and unrejectable. This indicates that the program made some achievements in relation to understanding and reestablishing relations with father. Second, significant differences were found in confidence in father's role between before and after the program. Especially, anxiety about father's role as a sub-area of such confidence was most considerably reduced. In conclusion, such objectives of the program as removing vague anxiety about father's role, establishing a desirable view of fatherhood and improving confidence about being a father proved to be achievable through getting skills of child understanding with the concept of developmental perspective and narrative therapy based.

A Study on the Perceived Father’s Role Performances and Self-Esteem of Adolescents (청소년이 지각한 아버지의 역할수행과 자아존감에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the state of father’s role performance and self-esteem of adolescents, to investigate the relation between the father’s role performances recognized by adolescents and the self-esteem of adolescents, and to present the basic data for showing the importance of father’s role in increasing the adolescents’self-esteem. The subject of this survey was 795 male and female students of the second grade in Kwangju middle and high schools. The questionnaire was used for this study as a means of measuring. The results of this study were as follows:1. The degrees of father’s role performances were considered ‘82.19 points’out of 125 by adolescents but rather high by the female students, it didn’t have any significant difference between the male students and female. 2. The degrees of adolescents’ self-esteem were ‘51.17 points’out of 85 on the whole. But specifically, the degrees of adolescents’self-esteem of the male students were higher than those of the female students. This self-esteem of adolescents caused significant differences in the right to the decision-making and the father’s occupation only. 3. The influence of father’s role performances on the adolescents’self-esteem was found very high, and more influence were showed by the female students than by the male students. 4. The order in the effective poser of variables on the adolescents’self-esteem was as following; the role in command and harmony, the sex, the economic role, the role in intellectual ability development. In conclusion, father’s role performance were found to be important variables on the conform adolescents’self-esteem.

Analysis of Father's Role in Korean Biographies (우리 나라 위인전에 나타난 아버지 역할 내용 분석)

  • Children team about their roles through literature, receive the information about the roles of family members and come to accept them. Especially, father's roles in biographies are so diverse, not consistent, compared to mother's roles, that it world be judged to be difficult for the children who had read to form the concept of the father's roles. As the father's roles in the fairy tales have important effect upon the formation of the children's role concept toward their fathers, the purpose of this study is to investigate the father' role appeared in Korean biographies. The method used for this study is the content analysis of the context related with fathering in Korean biographies. It is found that the most frequent father' role appeared in Korean biographies was a friend and companion such as to talk with child about the child's future. And the second frequent father's role in Korean biographies was a family ancestor, such as, to pray for a son's birth, to name the child, to arrange the child's marriage. The third role was that of a loaming helper. These results have been discussed in the light of former studies, and the limits of study method also have been discussed.

Father's Child-Rearing Behaviors, Children's Sex-Role Taking, Children's Emotional Responses and Children's Prosocial Behavior (아버지의 양육참여와 아동의 성역할, 정서 반응, 친사회적 행동과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships and predictor variable between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's sex-role taking, emotional responses and children's prosocial behavior by demographic variables and mother's work status. Subjects were 142 kindergarten children and their mothers in Busan. Three type of measurement were used in this study; (1) Two scales for father's child-rearing behaviors and children's emotional responses, (2) an interview for children's sex-role taking, and (3) amount of candies to share with classmates for children's prosocial behavior. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient, t-test, F-test, multiple regression, Scheffe's post hoc test using the SAS computer program. There were significant correlations between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's sex-role taking, and between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's prosocial behavior. There were significant differences in father's child-rearing behaviors, children's emotional respones, and children prosocial behavior by SES and mother's job. Father's child-rearing behaviors were the most important predictor variables influencing children's sex-role taking and children's prosocial behavior.

  • This study investigated the effects of work-father role conflict and parenting stress on parenting sense of competence. The subjects were 205 fathers who had a child 3 to 6 years old in Daegu. The major findings of this study were as follows. (1) There is a significant difference in the work-father role conflict according to the child's sex and family income. (2) There is a significant difference in the parenting stress according to the child's sex. (3) There is a significant difference in the parenting sense of competence according to family income. (4) Parenting sense of competence isinfluenced by work-father role conflict. (5) Parenting sense of competence is influenced by parenting stress.

A Study on the Transition of the Parental Role of Fathers Who Experienced Parental Leave (육아휴직을 경험한 아버지의 부모역할 전환에 관한 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore the parental role that men experience during parental leave. From the moment when a man decides to take parental leave, to his experiences during parental leave, and to the father's role that lasts until after reinstatement, this course will be examined. Methods: The subjects of this study were five fathers who were taking parental leave. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews done on Zoom, telephone calls and e-mail. Results: The results are as follows. First, the motive for the father's decision to take parental leave was that he wanted to take a break from work and to spend time with his children. Second, the father had experiences of a caregiver and secure-base for his ones. Also, he experienced intergenerational transmission of his parental role. Third, the father's role was maintained even after parental leave. Conclusion/Implications: The decision to take parental leave was a process of conformation of one's own decision. The parental role of the father was experienced through daily life and interaction with his children. And that continued even after parental leave.
