  • A new fast motion estimation algorithm is presented in this paper. The algorithm, named Enhanced Cross-Diamond Search (ECDS), is based on the Diamond Search (DS) algorithm. The DS algorithm, even though faster than the most well-known algorithms, was found not to be very robust in terms of objective and subjective qualities for several sequences and the algorithm searches unnecessary candidate blocks. We propose a novel ECDS algorithm using a small cross search as the initial step, and large/small DS patterns as subsequent steps for fast block motion estimation. Experimental results show that the ECDS is much more robust, provides a faster searching speed, and smaller distortions than other popular fast block-matching algorithms.

  • We present an efficient block-based motion estimation algorithm with motion analysis. The motion analysis determines a size of search pattern and a maximum repeated count of search pattern. In case of large movement in large image, we reduce search points and the local minimum which caused by low performance. The proposed algorithm employs with searching step of 2. The first step determines an initial search point with neighbor block vector and a size of initial search pattern. The second step determines a size of search pattern and a maximum repeated count with motion analysis. We improve motion prediction accuracy while reducing required computational complexity compared to other fast block-based motion estimation algorithms.

  • This paper introduces a new technique for block is matching motion estimation. Since the temporal correlation of the image sequence, the motion vector of a block is highly related to the motion vector of the same coordinate block in the previous image frame. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous frame, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. Using that idea, an efficient predicted direction search algorithm (PDSA) for block matching algorithm is proposed. Based on the direction of the blocks of the two successive previous frames, if the direction of the to successive blocks is same, the first search point of the proposed PDSA is moved two pixels to the direction of the block. The searching process after moving the first search point is processed according to the fixed search patterns. Otherwise, full search is performed with search area $\pm$2. Simulation results show that PSNR values are improved up to the 3.4dB as depend on the image sequences and improved about 1.5dB on an average. Search times are reduced about 20% than the other fast search algorithms. Simulation results also show that the performance of the PDSA scheme gives better subjective picture quality than the other fast search algorithms and is closer to that of the FS(Full Search) algorithm.

  • Motion Estimation time in the H.264 has a large portion of encoding time and must be improved for real time application. Most of proposed motion estimation algorithm including Sub-pixel search use the fast search algorithm to speed up motion estimation by targeting the performance of full search in the reference code. This paper proposes a novel fast sub-pixel search control algorithm for H.264 encoder by using neighbor motion vector after analyzing the encoded Motion vector of video sequence. In addition the horizontal/vertical searching method is proposed with the horizontal/vertical directionality of motion vector. And the evaluation is performed with the proposed algorithms and other reference algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose two fast VQ coclebook search algorithms efficient to the Wavelet/ VQ coding schemes. It is well known that the probability having large values in wavelet coefficient blocks is very low. In order to apply this property to codebook search, the index tables of the reordered codebook in each wavelet subband ae used. The exil condition in PDE can be satisfied in an earlystage by comparing the large coefficients of the codeword with their corresponding elements of input vector using the index tbles. As a result, search time can be reduced.

  • Internet routers perform packet forwarding which determines a next hop for each incoming packet using the packet's destination IP address. IP address lookup becomes one of the major challenges because it should be performed in wire-speed for every incoming packet under the circumstance of the advancement in link technologies and the growth of the number of the Internet users. Many binary search algorithms have been proposed for fast IP address lookup. However, tree-based binary search algorithms are usually unbalanced, and they do not provide very good search performance. Even for binary search algorithms providing balanced search, they have drawbacks requiring prefix duplication. In this paper, a new binary search algorithm which provides the balanced binary search and the number of its entries is much less than the number of original prefixes. This is possible because of composing the binary search tree only with disjoint prefixes of the prefix set. Each node has a prefix vector that has the prefix nesting information. The number of memory accesses of the proposed algorithm becomes much less than that of prior binary search algorithms, and hence its performance for IP address lookup is considerably improved.

  • Various Motion Estimation (ME) algorithms have been proposed since ME requires large computational complexity. The proposed algorithm employs Enhanced Cross Search Pattern (ECSP) using motion vector of neighbor-blocks to search the motion vector. The experimental results show that proposed algorithm reduces the search point up to 35% compared to conventional methods.

  • The three-step search (TSS) algorithm for block motion estimation has been widely used in real-time video coding due to the simplicity of the algorithm significant reduction of computationl cost and good performance. In this paper an improved three-step search (ITS) algorithm is proposed to improve the performance of the TSS algorithm. Simulation results show that in terms of motion compensation errors the proposed ITSS outperforms some popular fast search algorithms while it has the lower computational complexity.

  • A Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) algorithm is developed to analyze whole flow field both qualitatively and quantitatively. The practical use of PIV requires the use of fast, reliable, computer-based methods for tracking numerous particles suspended in a flow field. The TSS, NTSS, FFT-Hybrid, which are developed in the area of image compression and coding, are introduced to develop fast vector search algorithm. The numerical solution of the lid-driven cavity flow by the ADI algorithm with the Wachspress Formula is introduced to produce synthetic data for the validation of the tracking algorithms. The algorithms are applied to image data of real flow experiments. The comparisons in CPU time and mean error show, with a small loss of accuracy, CPU time for tracking is reduced considerably.

  • Two fast search algorithms are proposed for VQ encoding in subband/VQ coding schemes. These algorithms exploit the property of the transform domain that the large coefficients rarely exist in the decomposed subbands. And the exit condition of PDE algorithm can be satisfied by comparing the large values of the codeword with the corresponding ones of the input vector. The computational complexity can be reduced at the expense of memories without extra coding errors.
