  • The proposed method uses FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) and neural networks in order to extract texts in real time. In general, text areas are found in the higher frequency domain, thus, can be characterized using FFT. The neural network are learned by character region(high frequency) and non character region(low frequency). The candidate text areas can be thus found by applying the higher frequency characteristics to neural network. Therefore, the final text area is extracted by verifying the candidate areas. Experimental results show a perfect candidate extraction rate and about 95% text extraction rate. The strength of the proposed algorithm is its simplicity, real-time processing by not processing the entire image.

  • Noncontiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM)-based cognitive radio (CR) systems achieve highly efficient spectrum utilization by transmitting unlicensed users' data on subcarriers of licensed users' data when they are free. However, there are two disadvantages to the NC-OFDM system: out-of-band power (OBP) and a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). OBP arises due to side lobes of an NC-OFDM signal in the frequency domain, and it interferes with the spectrum for unlicensed users. A high PAPR occurs due to the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) block used in an NC-OFDM system, and it induces nonlinear effects in power amplifiers. In this study, we propose an algorithm called "Alternative Projections onto Convex and Non-Convex Sets" that reduces the OBP and PAPR simultaneously. The alternate projections are performed onto these sets to form an iteration, and it converges to the specified limits of in-band-power, peak amplitude, and OBP. Furthermore, simulations show that the bit error rate performance is not degraded while reducing OBP and PAPR.

  • This paper proposes an image segmentation for a vision-based automated defect inspection system on surface image of TFT-LCD(Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) panels. TFT-LCD images have non-uniform brightness, which is hard to finding defective regions. Although there are several methods or proposed algorithms, it is difficult to divide the defect with high reliability because of non-uniform properties in the image. Kamel and Zhao disclosed a method which based on logical stage algorithm for segmentation of graphics and character. This method is a one of the local segmentation method that has a advantage. It is that characters and graphics are well segmented in an image which has non-uniform property. As TFT-LCD panel image has a same property, so this paper proposes new algorithm to segment regions of defects based on Kamel and Zhao's algorithm. Our algorithm has an advantage that there are a few ghost objects around the defects. We had experiments to prove performance in real TFT-LCD panel images, and comparing with the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) method which is used a bandpass filter.

  • The CCTV is limited by weather conditions. To overcome this limitation, we develop a monitoring program that can sense the approach or recede of two or more objects within a surveillance system that uses a continuous-wave (CW) Doppler radar, and we proposed an algorithm to efficiently detect the approach or recede information of the object. The proposed algorithm separates the signal received by the CW Doppler radar into the real and imaginary parts using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and sums the amplitudes for each frequency to determine whether the objects are approaching or receding, using their locations. The algorithm is verified by simulations and experiments, which confirms that it successfully detects the approach or recede of two objects.

  • All-to-all personalized communication, or complete exchange, is at the heart of numerous applications, such as matrix transposition, fast Fourier Transform(FFT), and distributed table lookup. We present an efficient all-to-all personalized communication algorithm for a 2D torus inwormhole-routed networks. Our complete exchange algorithm adopts divide-and-conquer approach toreduce the number of start-up latency significantly, which is a good metric for network performancein wormhole networks. First, we divide the whole network into 2x2 basic cells, After speciallydesignated nodes called master nodes have collected messages to transmit to the rest of the basic cell, only master nodes perform complete exchange with reduced network size, N/2 x N/2. When finishedwith this complete exchange in master nodes, these nodes distribute messages to the rest of the masternode, which results in the desired complete exchange communication. After we present our algorithms,we analyze time complexities and compare our algorithms with several previous algorithms. And weshow that our algorithm is efficient by a factor of 2 in the required start-up time which means thatour algorithm is suitable for wormhole-routed networks.

  • In order to augment the robustness of OFDM system to Rayleigh multipath fading, there exist two smart antenna algorithms, namely, Pre-FFT smart antenna and Post-FFT smart antenna. After the mathematical modeling of both smart antenna algorithms, computer simulations have been carried to compare and analyze the performance of generalized eigen problem based Pre-FFT algorithm and the performance of Wiener solution based Post-FFT algorithm. It has been shown that the Post-FFT smart antenna far outperforms the Pre-FFT smart antenna due to the computational complexities. Especially it is so when the multipath signal arrives at beyond the guard interval and a rich co-channel interferer is introduced. Performance of a subcarrier clustering method proposed to lessen the computing load has been compared to that of a typical Wiener solution based Post-FFT smart antenna. Performance comparison between MRC(Maximum Ratio Combining) diversity based Post-FFT algorithm and typical Post-FFT algorithm has also been carried.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm that generates smooth and realistic transition views from one viewpoint to another view point on the panorama based navigation system. The proposed algorithm is composed with two steps. One is prewarping that aligns the viewing direction in two panorama image, the other is bidirectional disparity morphing (BDM) that generates the intermediate scene from the aligned panorama images. For the prewarping, first of all, we compute the phase correlation between two images in order to get the information such as the displacement, rotation, and scale. Then we align the original images using these information. As soon as finishing the prewarping, we compute the block based disparity vectors (DVs) and smooth them using the two occluding patterns. As we apply these DVs to the BDM, we can get the elaborate intermediate scenes. We make an experiment on the proposed algorithm with real panoramic images and we can get the satisfactory results.

  • Stochastic processes are used to represent phenomena in many diverse fields. Numerical simulation method is widely applied for the solution to stochastic problems of complex structures when alternative analytical methods are not applicable. In some practical applications the stochastic processes show non-Gaussian properties. When the stochastic processes deviate significantly from Gaussian, techniques for their accurate simulation must be available. The various existing simulation methods of non-Gaussian stochastic processes generally can only simulate super-Gaussian stochastic processes with the high-peak characteristics. And these methodologies are usually complicated and time consuming, not sufficiently intuitive. By revealing the inherent coupling effect of the phase and amplitude part of discrete Fourier representation of random time series on the non-Gaussian features (such as skewness and kurtosis) through theoretical analysis and simulation experiments, this paper presents a novel approach for the simulation of non-Gaussian stochastic processes with the prescribed amplitude probability density function (PDF) and power spectral density (PSD) by amplitude modulation and phase reconstruction. As compared to previous spectral representation method using phase modulation to obtain a non-Gaussian amplitude distribution, this non-Gaussian phase reconstruction strategy is more straightforward and efficient, capable of simulating both super-Gaussian and sub-Gaussian stochastic processes. Another attractive feature of the method is that the whole process can be implemented efficiently using the Fast Fourier Transform. Cases studies demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

  • The ventricular assist device(VAD) helps to reduce the overload against the patient's native heart(NH). The pulsatile VAD pumps out the ventricular blood to the aorta with pulsatile flow. If the VAD pulsates simultaneously with the NH, the ventricle of the NH could confronts abnormally elevated aortic pressure, and this could deteriorate the ventricle rather than assist to recover it. Thus counterpulsation algorithms to avoid copulsation have been adopted by many VADs, but these methods utilize electrocardiography or arterial pressure signals, which may have difficulties to acquire consistently for a long period. In this study, the copulsation estimation algorithm for the counterpulsation is developed using the VAD outlet pressure signal. The VAD outlet pressure signal is good to maintain for a long time and the sensor part could be integrated to the VAD as a built-in module. From the VAD outlet pressure signal and its pump rate information calculated with Fast Fourier Transform, pulse peaks by the VAD and the NH were extracted and the next copulsation time at which the VAD and the NH would pulsate simultaneously was estimated. This estimation algorithm was implemented by using PC MATLAB software and tested for various pump rate conditions with mock circulation system. For each condition, the copulsation time was estimated successfully. Consequently, the results showed the possibility to use the outlet cannula pressure signal in the copulsation estimation.

  • Automation of greenhouses has proved to be extremely helpful in maximizing crop yields and minimizing labor costs. The optimum conditions for cultivating plants are regularly maintained by the use of programmed sensors and actuators with constant monitoring of the system. In this paper, we have designed a prototype of a smart greenhouse using Arduino microcontroller, simple yet improved in feedbacks and algorithms. Only three important microclimatic parameters namely moisture level, temperature and light are taken into consideration for the design of the system. Signals acquired from the sensors are first isolated and filtered to reduce noise before it is processed by Arduino. With the help of LabVIEW program, Time domain analysis and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the acquired signals are done to analyze the waveform. Especially, for smoothing the outlying data digitally, Moving average algorithm is designed. With the implement of this algorithm, variations in the sensed data which could occur from rapidly changing environment or imprecise sensors, could be largely smoothed and stable output could be created. Also, actuators are controlled with constant feedbacks to ensure desired conditions are always met. Lastly, data is constantly acquired by the use of Data Acquisition Hardware and can be viewed through PC or Smart devices for monitoring purposes.
