The most common deterioration cause of concrete structures in urban environment is carbonation. Recently, the $CO_2$ concentration and temperature at atmosphere is sharply increased with time due to global warming phenomena. In this study, the climate scenario IS92a, which was suggested by the IPCC, is used to consider temperature and atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration change in the model of service life prediction. The modified mathematical solution, which was based on the Fick's 1st law of diffusion, was used to reflect concrete materials properties such as the degree of hydration of concrete with elapsed time, and important parameters, which associated with deterioration rate. The techniques of service life prediction are developed introducing the method of reliability and stochastic concept to consider microclimatic condition in Seoul, South Korea. From the result of service life prediction, concrete containing high W/C ratio is shown fast carbonation rate due to $CO_2$ concentration increase. It is concluded that the deterioration of concrete structures due to carbonation is insignificant problem on the conditions that below W/C 55%, well curing concrete.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cure type on the processing and physical properties under conditions of similar stress-strain properties. On the carbon black filled natural rubber(NR) based compound, the induction time decreased, but the cure rate became fast with increasing loading of sulfur donor agent. Tensile strength was little affected on the curing type. However, elongation generally decreased with increasing accelerator. Effect of cure type on the blow-out properties was followings: CV
Generally polymer mortar and concrete using unsaturated polyester resin has high strengths and good chemical resistance. However it also has high brittleness and because of this reason, it is not used for the purpose that demands high resistance to impact. The purpose of this study is to improve the brittleness of unsaturated polyester mortar(UPE mortar) which could be used for the flooring material with recycled aggregates and UPE. Polyurethane liquid rubber(PU) and recycled aggregates were used to complement the brittleness and to recycle the resources respectively. The characteristics of mortar were investigated according to the molecular weight and substitution rate of PU. As the molecular weight and PU substitution rate were increased, the viscosity was increased, working life became fast and curing shrinkage was reduced. Compressive and flexural strengths were also reduced but tile brittleness was improved. Therefore, it is seemed that the improved WE mortar could be obtained by using polyurethane liquid rubber with the polyol of molecular weight 2000, 3000.

Structural integrity of solid rocket depends on the residual reactions between constituents of its composition(post cure, migration etc.), the oxygen(or anti-oxydent) in the free volume and humidity (desiccant) under the perfect sealed condition. Mechanical Properties of composite solid propellant arising from those factors are very complex. Moreover the propulsion are faced with thermal loads from diurnal & seasonal cycle till firing. In this study, the fast evaluation method of long term mechanical properties is suggested based on Thermo-Rheological Simplicity from curing oven to cool-down stage in view point of thermal stabilization. For this subject, endurance tester having temperature control capability are devised. From the results from incremental load and strain, non-linear characteristics are discussed.
Transparent, photocatalytic, and self-cleaning TiO2 thin film is developed by TiO2 sol-gel coating on glass and polycarbonate (PC) substrates. Acetyl acetone (AcAc) suppresses the precipitation of TiO2 by forming a yellowish (complex) transparent sol-gel. XPS analysis confirms the presence of Ti2p and O1s in the thin films on glass and PC substrates. The TiO2-sol is prepared by stabilizing titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) with diethylamine and methyl alcohol. The addition of AcAcsilane coupling solution to the TiO2-sol instantaneously turns to yellowish color owing to the complexing of titanium with AcAc. The AcAc solution substantially improves the photocatalytic property of the TiO2 coating layer in MB solutions. The coated TiO2 film exhibits super hydrophilicity without and with light irradiation. The TiO2 thin film stabilized by adding 8.7 wt% AcAc shows the highest photo-degradation for methylene blue (MB) solution under UV light irradiation. Also, the optimum photocatalytic activity is obtained for the 8.7 wt% AcAc-stabilized TiO2 coating layer calcined at 450 ℃. The thin-films on glass exhibit fast self-cleaning from oleic acid contamination within 45 min of UV-light irradiation. The appropriate curing time at 140 ℃ improves the anti-fogging and thermal stability of the TiO2 film coated on PC substrate. The watermark-free PC substrate is particularly beneficial to combat fogging problems of transparent substrates.
Composite structures have been designed by stacking the laminae with different stacking angles to meet the required mechanical performance. Although the induced stresses on the composite structures under the external loads usually differ depending on the location, we determined the stacking sequence based on the maximum stress, which leads to low efficiency and generally is not the optimum design. Recently, piecewise integrated composites (PICs) were suggested for solving this inefficiency. PICs assume the perfect bonding between adjacent pieces, but this is ideal and hard to accomplish. Therefore, the overlap at the boundary is essential to prevent separation from each other. In this study, we investigated the effect of the overlap design on the impact failure mode of PIC plates. We fabricated the sample composite plates with different overlap designs using the fast curing carbon prepreg and conducted the impact tests according to ASTM D 7136. We found that PICs had different failure modes according to the overlap design, which lead the changes of absorbed impact energies as well as impact load curves.

Solid polymer electrolyte films are prepared by ultraviolet radiation in the mixtures of an ionic liquid salt (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, $EMIBF_4$) and solvent (acetonitrile (ACN) or propylene carbonate(PC)), and an oligomer (poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate, PEGDA, 45-60 wt.%). Electrochemical properties of activated carbon supercapacitors adopting the solid polymer electrolyte films as a separator are also examined by cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurement techniques. As a result, the supercapacitor adopting the PEGDA as much as 45 wt.% exhibits a superior capacitance of $46Fg^{-1}$ at $20mVs^{-1}$. It seems that this is due to fast kinetics of ion conduction by sufficient film flexibility, which can be allowed by comparatively weak ultraviolet curing of small anount of the PEGDA.
In this study, the construction method of new underground continuos impervious wall that the bentonite slurry keeps the stability of excavated trench and the mixture of cement and bentonite plays a role as a constituent of impervious wall in the trench. The merit of homogeneity of the method so called as a cement-bentonite slurry wall enables to accurately make an estimation of hydraulic conductivity of the walls compared with that by other general grouting methods and to verify their waterproof efficiency without difficulty at the design stage. The use of cement-bentonite slurry walls for the containment of groundwater flow has also proven a cost-effective impervious wall technology by employing the simple combination of construction equipments and easy and fast construction procedures. The engineering characteristics of cement-bentonite impervious wall obtained by carrying out the laboratory experiments under various conditions. This study reveals the effect of variation of constituent materials and their mixing methods (Water-Cement-Bentonite) on the engineering characteristics of a composition. Also, this study makes some recommendations on the optimum mixing ratio and mixing sequence for the best quality at the site. That is the most important factors to estimate the construction cost and design of the technique. The comparison is lastly made to evaluate the effect of ordinary Portland and blast furnace slag cement as a bonding material on the behavior of impervious walls.
We have developed photosensitive electrochromic smart windows that does not require any transparent conducting oxide (TCO) substrate. In our previous study, we demonstrated that a flexible film-type device made with a low temperature curing WO3 sol and TiO2 sol could show a reversible and rapid switching between colored and bleached state via incorporation of platinum catalysts on the surface of WO3 layer. However, when these devices were exposed to sunlight over 4 hour, it was confirmed that they did not return to fully bleached state in the darkened state due to their overcoloring process. In this study, we added 4-hydroxy-(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPOL) as an additive to the electrolyte of photosensitive electrochromic device to effectively prevent the undesired overcoloring process. The resulting device with TEMPOL indeed did not undergo excessive coloration and showed great reversibility even after being exposed to sunlight for over 4 hours. Various concentrations of TEMPOL were applied to compare changes in the visible transmittance and coloring/bleaching kinetics of devices. In terms of energetic point of view, we proposed a plausible mechanism of TEMPOL to prevent excessive coloration.

Demand for energy consumption reduction is increasing according to the development expectations of future mobility. Lightweight structural materials are known as a method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency. In particular, fiber reinforced polymer composite (FRP) is attracting attention as a material that can replace existing metal alloys due to its excellent mechanical properties and light weight. In this paper, industrial applications and research trends of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRP, carbon FRP) and self-reinforced composites (SRC) were reviewed based on the reinforcement, polymer matrix, and manufacturing process. In order to overcome the expensive process cost and long manufacturing time of the epoxy resin-based autoclave method, which is mainly used in the aircraft field, mass production of CFRP-applied electric vehicles has been reported using a high-pressure resin transfer molding process including fast-curing epoxy. In addition, thermoplastic resin-based CFRP and interface enhancement methods to solve the recycling issue of carbon fiber composites were reviewed in terms of materials and processes. To form a perfect matrix-reinforcement interface, which is known as the major factor inducing the excellent mechanical properties of FRP, studies on SRC impregnated with the same matrix in polymer fibers have been reported. The physical and mechanical properties of SRC based on various thermoplastic polymers were reviewed in terms of polymer orientation and composite structure. In addition, a copolymer matrix strategy for extending the processing window of highly drawn polypropylene fiber-based SRC was discussed. The application of CFRP and SRC as lightweight structural materials can provide potential options for improving the energy efficiency of future mobility.
