  • Present study explains some experimental results on the aerodynamic noise of the cross-flow fan usually installed in the indoor unit of the room air-conditioners and provides a simple reduction method of radiating sound to decrease the total noise level. The spectrums of the noise of the cross-flow fan were analyzed by the spectral decomposition method to characterize the generated sound. The unsteady fluctuating flow field was also measured using the I-type hot-wire probe. Comparing the spectral characteristics of the sound and the flow velocity, a useful noise reduction method was proposed which bounds the region with a fence where the flow fluctuations were noticeably changed in the same fashion as the source spectral distribution functions vary. To validate the proposed method for reducing noise generated by the cross-flow fan, the sound pressure levels of the cross-flow fan system were compared of the experimental rig with and without the bounding fence for various flow rates.

  • The cross-flow fan performance and its sound noise characteristics are predicted by computational methods. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in moving coordinates are solved by a SMAC method on unstructured triangular meshes, using a sliding mesh technique at the interface between the domain rotating with blades and the rest stationary part. The computationally predicted fan performance was favorably compared with experiment, and some numerical aspects of simulating the cross-flow fan are discussed. With the computed unsteady flow field, aeroacoustic sound noise of the fan is predicted by the Lighthill-Curie equation. The unsteady surface pressure fluctuations on stabilizer enables a prediction of BPF noise of the uniform pitch blade fan quite accurately. The aeroacoustic sound noise characteristics of both uniform and random pitch blade fans are also examined by SPL spectrum analysis.

  • In the Over-The-Range, the outlet size is limited by the industrial standards. Therefor to enlarge the volume of cavity, the installation height of ventilation fan is become small, the system resistance is higher than before. For that reason, the important design variables such as the diameter of a fan, the scroll expansion angle, etc. which play the significant role on flow rate and noise, are confined. In this study, we made an experiment of the diameter of fans relation to scroll expansion angle and investigated flow rate of the length of fans in enlarged cavity volume of OTR, and then we designed the new scroll to improve the flow rate and noise level. As a result, flow rate increased to 110% compared to current scroll and the blade passing frequency of a fan is disappeared by inclined cut-off shapes.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the amount of contributions of each Sirroco fan parameter to noise and performance using experimental and numerical approaches. We made several fans and structures related to fan housing and fan for parameter study like inlet blade angle, outlet blade angle, inlet diameter, outlet diameter, blade shape. etc.. Numerical analysis was performed using commercial code (FANNOISE) for the part not to be possible to do experiment. Using these parameter study, We have found the way to reduce noise and improve performance of fan and had some useful data for designing low noise and high performance fan.

  • Small axial fans have become widely used as cooling devices in recent years. Because of their increasing importance, studies have been conducted on ways to improve the performance and reduce the noise of such fans. In this report, a small axial fan with a diameter of 85 mm (a type popularity used in personal computer or workstation) was selected for further examination. The influence on aerodynamic performance and noise of such frame design parameters as blade tip clearance results in a decrease of discrete frequency noise and an increase of broad-spectrum noise. As for the most suitable design refinement in terms of fan efficiency, we found that the treatment of outlet corner roundness and altering spoke skew to the direction counter to that of fan rotation was effective.

  • A high performance and low noise refrigerator fan has been developed in order to satisfy the customer's high quality needs, that is, luxury, big size and low noise. In this study, the characteristics of a new developed fan and a current fan was calculated and compared by using numerical simulation. Rotation of a fan makes cold air circulation inside a refrigerator. A numerical simulation of air flow shows distribution and local flow regime of a cold air flow circulation, and revealed a cause of low noise as well. Optimization of a duct shape also decreased noise level.

  • The flow induced noise of the cross-flow fan with uniform/random pitch blades is predicted by computational methods. With the time dependent surface pressure data obtained by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in moving coordinates, the acoustic pressure is predicted by the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. The positions of the blade noise source are identified through an investigation of the acoustic pressure history induced by one blade, and it is confirmed that the dominant noise source is near the stabilizer. Since the acoustic pressure of the random pitch fan fluctuates according to the blade passin, the dominant BPF noise of the uniform pitch fan is modulated into some reduced discrete noises which have multiples of a 50Hz difference from BPF.

  • In this paper, a guideline of axial flow fan design for noise reduction of refrigerators is p resented. Refrigerators have components which have a role to screen particular frequency air borne-noise which is generated by an axial flow fan set in them. Effective ways to use the particular characteristic of refrigerators are shown in this study. As a result of application of the methods, we reduced the noise of the target systems by more than 3 dB(A) from the viewpoint of air-borne noise produced by the axial flow fan set.

  • Recently both high performance and low noise for a cooling fan used in a server computer have been required. In this study, we measured the noise characteristics for a small cooling fan used in a computer or in a server, and compared the computational data to measured ones. SC/Tetra V10 and FlowNoise V4.3 was used for the unsteady flow field and the aeroacoustic analysis, respectively. The aeroacoustic analysis results have the good agreement with measured data within 3% errors in overall SPL. In the noise spectrum, we could find the peak tonal noise at lower frequency than 1st BPF, and confirm that the reason is caused by the asymmetry of bell mouth shape.

  • This study is concerned with the reduction of noise radiation by an industrial fan unit. Among the noise sources involved in the fan unit, this article is focused on the noise source due to vibration of panels of the unit housing. It is shown here that noise radiation associated with the panel vibration can be as significant in some frequency ranges as that associated with other noise sources such as aeroacoustic fan noise.
