Dark Sides of Engaging in Fan Community of Human Brand

  • People enthusiastic about human brands eagerly engage in fan communities to share their common interests with others. Although sharing one's enthusiasm towards the same celebrities can give thempositive senses of we-ness (in-group identity, togetherness, camaraderie) and belongingness, negative sides also exist such as schadenfreude and trash talk. Even though the studies addressing the negative sides of fan community are gaining significance, no prior studies formally examined the negative consequences of engaging in a fan community and their effect on one's well-being. Therefore, this current study aims to investigate how engaging in fan community negatively affects members' psychological well-being through schadenfreude and trash talk. Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that engaging highly in a fan community leads members to feel malicious pleasure at rivals' misfortunes and share negative opinions of rival human brands and fan communities. These negative consequences of fan community engagement ultimately lead to a lower level of psychological wellbeing, especially in the area of personal growth whereas fan community engagement has a direct positive effect on personal growth. By showing the negative influences of engaging in fan communities on members' well-being through schadenfreude and trash talk, the results of this study are expected to add depth to the existing literature.

스포츠 구단의 경기 성적 및 소셜미디어 운영이 팬덤의 인게이지먼트에 미치는 영향: 팬 토큰의 조절 효과를 중심으로 (The Effects of Sports Team Performance and Social Media Operations on Fan Engagement: The Moderating Role of Fan Tokens)

  • 스포츠 팬덤은 스포츠 구단의 수익구조에 있어 핵심적인 요인으로, IT기술의 발달에 힘입어 전세계적으로 확산되고 있다. 이에 따라 스포츠 구단에도 글로벌 팬덤을 관리하기 위한 노력이 요구되고 있으며 소셜미디어를 포함한 디지털 마케팅 전략의 중요성 또한 높아지고 있다. 본 연구는 스포츠 구단의 경기 성적 및 소셜미디어 운영이 팬들의 구단에 대한 인게이지먼트를 반영하는 온라인 정보 검색량에 대하여 미치는 영향을 실증분석을 통해 확인한다. 더불어, 이러한 영향이 스포츠 팬 토큰의 발행 여부에 따라 다를 수 있음을 검증한다. 본 연구를 위하여 2022년 7월~12월의 기간에 대하여 유럽축구연맹, 네이버 스포츠, 엑스, 네이버 데이터랩에서 각 구단별 경기 일정 및 성적, 소셜미디어 게시물의 게시량, 팬들의 온라인 정보 검색량을 수집하여 분석하였다. 데이터 분석 결과, 구단의 경기 성적인 경기 중 골 득실점과 구단의 소셜미디어 게시물의 게시량은 팬들의 온라인 정보 검색량에 유의하고 긍정적인 영향을 미친다. 나아가, 구단의 스포츠 팬 토큰이 발행된 경우, 구단의 경기 성적 및 소셜미디어 운영이 팬들의 온라인 정보 검색량에 미치는 상술된 영향력이 강화되는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 스포츠 구단과 팬 인게이지먼트에 대한 실증분석을 수행하고 팬 토큰의 마케팅적 측면을 탐구함으로써 스포츠 마케팅의 연구 범위를 확장하며 스포츠 구단의 마케팅 전략 수립을 위한 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다.

  • Purpose Facebook is a social network service that has the highest number of Monthly Active Users around the world. Hence, marketers have selected Facebook as the most important platform to get customer engagement. With respect to the customer engagement enhancement, the most popular and engaging post type in the Facebook brand fan pages related to what was usually classified as 'sweepstakes'. Sweepstakes refer to a form of gambling where the entire prize may be awarded to the winner. Which makes customers more engaged with the brand. This study aims to explore sweepstakes-oriented social media marketing approaches based on the application of big data analytics. Design/methodology/approach we collect sweepstakes data from each company based on the data crawling from the Facebook brand fan pages. The output of this study explains how companies in each category of FCB grid can design and apply sweepstakes for their social media marketing. Findings The results show that they have one thing in common across the four quadrants of FCB grid. Regardless of the quadrants, most frequently observed type is 'Simple/Quiz or Comments/Quatrains [event type of sweepstakes] + Gifticon [type of reward prize] + Image [type of message display] + No URL [Link toother website] +Single-Gift-Offer [type of reward prize payment]'. So, if the position of the brand is hard to be defined by the FCB grid model, then this general rule can be applied to all types of brands. Also some differences between the quadrants of the FCB grid were observed. This study offers several research implications by analyzing Sweepstakes-oriented social media marketing approaches in Facebook brand fan pages. By using the FCB grid model, this study provides guidance on how companies can design their sweepstakes-oriented social media marketing approaches in the context of Facebook brand fan pages by considering their context.

  • Purpose One of the main characteristics of Social Network Service(SNS) is that users in an open space makes posts through voluntary participation and sharing among them. This makes SNS a very attractive channel to companies that need to send their messages to consumers. As a matter of fact, there are many companies doing marketing activities through a platform of Fan Page as a space for corporations and consumers to act together. This study defines the values and types of companies' advertising posts on Facebook, empirically analyzes the results of them, and investigates factors that could enhance the customer engagement. Design/methodology/approach A research model was built to demonstrate which values and types of posts were combined by corporations' posts on Facebook and create their messages and which of those combinations would lead to high results of customer engagement. Findings The results show differences in the values of posts between the group of high customer engagement and the other group on Facebook. This study makes its contribution by conducting elaborate analysis of posts on Facebook and thus proposing marketing strategies that companies, which had difficulties with systematic marketing activities due to cost limitations, could use on Facebook.

소셜 네트워크 사이트의 구전 마케팅의 효과성 영향 요인 (Factors Affecting Viral Marketing Effectiveness in Social Network Sites)

  • Social Network Services (SNSs) have grown to be new and promising tools of marketing. By referring to researches done on e-mail viral marketing, this paper operationizes SNS viral marketing effectiveness to accurately reflect marketing success in SNS environment, and tries to identify its affecting factors. As potential affecting factors, fan size, advertisement type, existence of engagement elicitation and incentive are identified. By sampling real advertisement postings on Facebook, we showed that fan size, advertisement type, and engagement elicitation are factors affecting SNS viral marketing success. This research expanded the conventional model of viral marketing into SNS settings to improve understanding on SNS viral marketing. Motivation is discussed as an important factor, and this research showed that viral campaign can be more successful when it triggers internal motivation to engage, but not the external motivation. This research could also be a guide for practitioners on how to post a successful advertisement in SNSs.

An Empirical Investigation into How to Use Visual Storytelling for Increasing Facebook User Engagement

  • In order to identify effective approaches for creating more viral Facebook posts, this research conducted an empirical content analysis of leading Korean brands' Facebook fan-pages (Samsung Mobile, SK Telecom, Kia Motors, and POSCO). Their distinctive visual storytelling and communication patterns were investigated as effective user engagement triggers. Through analysis of the research results, it was statistically proved that the different industrial attributes of the four brands, which are primarily characterized by their product (or service) types, affect their Facebook posting patterns by showing different engaging rates (measured by like, comment, and share metrics). In addition, the user engagement rates of the posts were influenced by their visual storytelling factors (i.e. ad objective, value scale, and visual media types). In line with these statistical findings, the distinctive visual storytelling strategies of the four brands were identified. Moreover, competitive and uncompetitive visual storytelling tactics were suggested according to the ad objectives and visual media types on Facebook.

Labour of Love: Fan Labour, BTS, and South Korean Soft Power

  • With the steady rise in global popularity of the Korean music group BTS, the South Korean government and surrounding industries have swiftly begun utilizing their image and international recognition for specific nation branding purposes. While K-pop soft power strategies are not novel to the South Korean state, what is new is the rapid speed at which BTS have become a beacon for South Korean culture, language, and symbolism in the international arena. However, few scholarly works have sought to investigate the role fans have played in this heightened position for the group as state representatives, with minimal research conducted into the work fans do within the framework of ARMY fan culture. This paper will thus aim to fill the gap in scholarship on ARMY as an organized labour network, focusing on the role fans play as labourers in online spaces that work to promote, disseminate, and cultivate wider recognition for BTS as artists. Through the conjunct engagement of a political economy framework and theories of participatory culture, this paper will explore the manner through which the free labour of ARMY, premised on affect, has constructed the fandom as active agents of soft power alongside BTS themselves.

Analyzing User Feedback on a Fan Community Platform 'Weverse': A Text Mining Approach

  • This study applies topic modeling to uncover user experience and app issues expressed in users' online reviews of a fan community platform, Weverse on Google Play Store. It allows us to identify the features which need to be improved to enhance user experience or need to be maintained and leveraged to attract more users. Therefore, we collect 88,068 first-level English online reviews of Weverse on Google Play Store with Google-Play-Scraper tool. After the initial preprocessing step, a dataset of 31,861 online reviews is analyzed using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling with Gensim library in Python. There are 5 topics explored in this study which highlight significant issues such as network connection error, delayed notification, and incorrect translation. Besides, the result revealed the app's effectiveness in fostering not only interaction between fans and artists but also fans' mutual relationships. Consequently, the business can strengthen user engagement and loyalty by addressing the identified drawbacks and leveraging the platform for user communication.

  • 본 연구는 페이스 북 브랜드 팬 페이지 사용자들이 추구한 편익을 기능적, 정서적, 상징적 편익의 세 차원으로 분류하여 이들 편익이 브랜드 애착과 브랜드 몰입에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 구조적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 기능적 편익에 비해 감성적 편익이 브랜드 애착을 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 상징적 편익과 기능적 편익 간의 비교에서는 상징적 편익이 브랜드 애착 형성에 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 감성적 편익과 상징적 편익은 차이가 없이 브랜드 애착에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 브랜드 애착은 브랜드 몰입에 영향을 주는 선행 변수라는 점이 확인되었다.

국내 100대 기업 페이스북 콘텐츠 전략과 인게이지먼트 연구: B2B·B2C 기업 간 차이를 중심으로 (Study on Corporate Facebook Posts and User Engagement of the KOSPI 100 Companies in Korea: Difference between B2B and B2C Companies)

  • 기업은 브랜드 인지도 제고와 제품 판매를 위한 공중과의 소통 창구로 소셜미디어를 적극 활용해 왔다. 특히 팬데믹은 효과적인 비대면 소통 채널로서 소셜미디어의 역할이 부상하는 계기가 되었다. 그러나 기업의 사업 성격에 따른 소셜미디어 활용 전략의 차이에 관한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 기업을 B2B와 B2C로 구분하여 두 집단 간 이용자 인게이지먼트에 영향을 미치는 소셜미디어 콘텐츠 구성 요소에 차이가 있는지를 실증적으로 알아보았다. 분석을 위해 국내 시가총액 상위 100대 기업 중 페이스북 팬페이지를 운영하는 기업 22개를 대상으로 2020년 1월 1일부터 12월 31일까지 게재한 콘텐츠를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 B2C 기업은 콘텐츠 제작 시 B2B 기업보다 동영상을 더 많이 사용해 생생함을 강조했으며, 정보 검색 용이성 측면에서 해시태그를 더 많이 사용했고, 본문에서는 제품명을 더 많이 언급한 것으로 나타났다. 반면 B2B 기업은 콘텐츠 제작 시 이미지를 선호했으며, 용이한 정보 검색을 위해 하이퍼링크를 더 많이 사용했고, 본문에서 제품보다는 회사명을 더 많이 언급했다. 콘텐츠 구성 요소와 인게이지먼트 간의 관계에서 B2B 기업은 이미지가 포함된 경우와 본문 길이가 긴 경우 인게이지먼트 지표(좋아요, 댓글, 공유 수)가 높아졌으나, 하이퍼링크와 URL이 포함된 경우 반대로 인게이지먼트가 낮아졌다. B2C 기업에서는 본문 길이가 길수록 인게이지먼트가 유의미하게 증가함을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 기업 실무자나 운영자가 회사의 특성에 맞춰 인게이지먼트를 높일 수 있는 소셜미디어 전략을 수립하는 데 실무적인 시사점을 제공한다.
