This study examined the influences of both peer and parent-child relationships on suicidal ideation in adolescents with a focus on interpersonal relationships in adolescence that can act as risks as well as protective factors for youth suicide. This study analyzed 5,440 middle and high school students drawn from data, the seventh Happy Planet Index of children-adolescent in Korea, and conducted a series of logistic regressions. The results are as follows. First, both direct and indirect involvement in the school violence affects suicidal ideation as a risk factor in peer relationships. However, the quality and quantity of close friends of adolescents do not represent a protective role against suicidal ideation insofar as they are exposed to school violence. Second, adolescents who live apart from one of their parents are vulnerable to suicidal ideation than those who live with two parents. Third, very poor parent-child relationships in adolescence are not necessarily associated with suicidal ideation in adolescents. Fourth, shared time or activities between parents and adolescents in terms of family meal times are more likely to reduce suicidal ideation in adolescents than the emotional characteristics (trustworthiness or a close relationship) of parents and adolescents. The findings provide implications that frequent contact and shared activities in terms of family dining may contribute to the prevention of adolescent suicide.
This study compares marital satisfaction between male and female rural migrants and explores the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The survey included 483 migrants living in rural communities of North Jeolla Province and South Jeolla Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross tables, the t-test, correlations, and a hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. According to the results, marital satisfaction was higher in men than in women. In addition, the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction were greater in men than in women. The major determinant of marital satisfaction in men was economical preparation, whereas that in women was family values. Economical preparation for rural living was more important for men, and the sufficient understanding and internalization of rural living was more important for women. In particular, family values represented the main variable between men and women in terms of marital satisfaction. These results suggest that family relationships may be the most important factor influencing rural migrants' marital satisfaction and that spousal relationships may be the core factor influencing family relationships.

This study forecasts the outlook 10 years from now regarding domestic labor and caregiving by the Baby Boomer generation and the preparations needed in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The scenario-planning method was used to explore changing trends in domestic labor and caregiving, the rationale for which has been questioned by both seniors and family welfare experts. Based on the results of the survey and our researchers' opinions, it was concluded that the changing trends were caused by two factors: the probability of alterations in domestic labor and the strength of family relationships. On the basis of these conclusions, four scenarios regarding baby boomers' domestic labor and caregiving in 10 years were proposed using two axes: the "high and low probability of alterations" and the "strengthening and weakening of family relationships." The first scenario is a "preference for the self-caring form of family," which has a high probability of domestic labor alterations and weak family relationships. The second scenario is a "preference for the flexible form of family," which has a high probability of domestic labor alterations and strong family relationships. The third scenario is a "preference for the traditional form of family," which has a low probability of domestic labor alterations and strong family relationships. The fourth scenario is a "preference for the public caregiving form of family," which has a low probability of domestic labor alterations and weak family relationships. These results provide basic information about the various aspects of baby boomers' lives-including the development of various goods and services, the establishment of policies regarding seniors, and programs for successful aging-and can help equip our society to take the actions needed for a super-aged population.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of family-of-origin experiences(parents' marital adjustment and affectionate relationship with parents) and self-differentiation on the nuclear family relationships(marital adjustment of married men women, and affectionate relationship with child). Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire method with 159 married men and 193 married women. The results showed that first, married men and women perceived the level of family-of-origin experiences lower than that of nuclear family relationships, and there were significant differences in the level of marital adjustment across sex, age, marital status, and income. Second, there was significant positive correlation between family-of-origin experiences and self-differentiation, between family-of-origin experiences and the nuclear family relationships, and between self-differentiation and the nuclear family relationships. Third, multiple regression analyses indicated that parents' marital adjustment and emotional cutoff were the powerful predictors of marital adjustment of married men women. Finally, women's affectionate relationship with child was predicted by such variables as affectionate relationship with parents, fusion with others, and emotional fusion, whereas men's affectionate relationship with child was predicted by such variables as affectionate relationship with parents, emotional reactivity, and I-position.
The aim of this study was to grasp the context of family life education under the Joseon Dynasty. As a first step to attain this goal, we used Yi Duk-Hong's Bubuyubyeoldo as our main material and examined the meaning of 'bubuyubyeol'(夫婦有別) in family life education as it was defined during the Joseon Dynasty. As a result, we found that 'bubuyubyeol' implied the strict avoidance of the opposite sex in the relationship between a couple and others as well as within the marital relationship. We also determined that in the family life education, 'bubuyubyeol' was closely related to 'bujayuchin'(父子有親), a concept that refers to the ethical relationship between parents and children. This concept also, formed the basis of social relationships. These results imply that contemporary family life education will be more effective and efficient 1) when it presupposes a common basic concept pertaining to the contents of object-specific education as well as overall family life education, and 2) when direct education programs are executed in harmony with indirect education.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among family health, parental monitoring, and the self-esteem of adolescents. Data gathered from 306 adolescents in Incheon City and Gyeonggi-do were analyzed. The major findings were as follows: First, adolescents generally perceived their family as healthy, perceived their mothers' monitoring as higher than their fathers' monitoring. And many adolescents also had positive self-esteem. Second, there were positive correlations among family health, parental monitoring, and the self-esteem of adolescents. Lastly, the relatively important factors affecting adolescents' self-esteem were family health, parental monitoring, and family economic status. This study suggests we need many family life education programs in order to enhance family health, parental monitoring, and the self-esteem of adolescents.
The purposes of this research were to investigate the conditions of family life education and to develop an effective program for single-mother families. to study these objectives, two kinds of questionnaire were used and the data were obtained through 60 officials and 173 single mothers. the most frequently educated topic by organizations was counseling and mental hygiene. Family relationships and women's activity were following important topics, but family relationships was most needed topic by officials and single mothers. Concurrent education type for mother and children was more preferred and its appraisal was relatively high. for effectiveness in education, single mothers and officials both demanded more practical and easy understandable contents. According to above results, the concurrent-type program for strong mother-children relationships that emphasized communication skills, psychological strategies, and the importance of social support system was proposed.
Although not many older Korean parents who take care of children with intellectual disabilities have been reported depression due to care-giving related stresses, little is known about how they could be protected from this. This study examines whether satisfaction with family relationships moderate the relationships between time demands, caregiving stress, and depression of older parents who take care of children with intellectual disabilities. The analyses were conducted based on data from the Korean National Survey on Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their Families of 2011, and only a total of 276 parents, aged over 60 were examined. Multiple regression analysis shows that older parents with higher level of satisfaction with family relationships were less likely to be influenced by time demands of care-giving. This indicates that satisfaction with family relationships could buffer the relationships between time demands of care-giving, and depression. This finding suggests that satisfaction with family relationships is a protective factor, buffering the negative effects of time demands of care-giving and depression. This supports 'socio-emotional selectivity theory' which family relationships are important to older people. Therefore, it is highly recommended to develop practical intervention that can improve the level of satisfaction of family relationship of the older parents, and to make policy and institutional supplementation.
The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between family of origin and youth transitioning from out-of-home care. Data were collected from six youths transitioning from out-of-home care and were analyzed using the phenomenological approach. The results of this study were as follows. Four categories and twelve subcategories were drawn from the meaning units. The four categories were 'chaos in separation', 're-established relations but with distance', 'completely ended relationships with the family of origin', and 'redrawing family boundaries'. First, the participants who were separated from their parents due to poverty or divorce reunited with their parents, and they appeared to continue their relationships with the family of origin after transitioning from out-of-home care. The youth were receiving various forms of support from their parents in order to be independent, and they were experiencing stable independence through this support. Second, the participants who were separated from their parents due to serious child abuse or parental death had broken relationships with their parents. The youth were independent and relied on new alternative relationships that were not with the family of origin, but they experienced somewhat unstable self-reliance. In short, participants' relationships with families of origin in this study can be defined as a tight rope between love and hate. Based on these results, child welfare practice and policy implications were discussed to help out-of-home care youth's relationship with their family of origin.
BACKGROUND: A higher frequency of family meals is associated with good dietary habits in young people. This study focused on the relationships of family meal frequency with food neophobia and personality traits in adolescents. SUBJECTS/METHOD: For this purpose, we administered a survey to 495 middle school students in Seoul metropolitan city, after which the data were analyzed using the SPSS (18.0) program. Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationships among dietary habits, personality traits, and food neophobia according to frequency of family meals. RESULTS: Dietary habits, personality traits, and food neophobia all showed significant differences according to the frequency of family meals. Further, eating regular family meals was associated with good dietary habits (P < 0.001) and was linked with improved extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness/intellect (P < 0.001). On the other hand, it showed a negative relationship with food neophobia (P < 0.001). The relationship between dietary habits and food neophobia showed a negative correlation (P < 0.01). The relationship between dietary habits and personality traits showed a positive correlation (P < 0.01). Lastly, the relationship between personality traits and food neophobia showed a negative correlation (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, the frequency of family meals affects dietary habits, personality traits, and food neophobia in adolescents.
