  • This study examines the factors related to university students' positive beliefs about the consequences of maternal employment. A total of 338 university students in Seoul, Gyeong-gi, and Kyungnam area provided information about their socio-economic background, parents' employment history, achievement motivation, and gender egalitarian attitude. A two-way analysis of variance showed significant interaction effects of gender and grade on positive beliefs about the consequences of maternal employment. Multiple regression analyses by gender indicated that factors related with university students' positive beliefs about the consequences of maternal employment may differ by gender. For male students, grade, and socio-cultural gender egalitarian attitude were significantly related to positive beliefs about the consequences of maternal employment. For female students, grade, family monthly income, mother's employment during elementary school, and achievement motivation were related with positive beliefs about the consequences of maternal employment.

  • Hoojo-dang is the Beol-dang of Gwangsan Kim's family in Gunja-ri, Yeaan This study aims to reconstruct the architectural drawings of the building through actual measurement, and by investigating documentary records of Kim's family, to trace and infer when the building was originally constructed. In doing this, it enables to identify and describe the architectural types and characteristics. The results are as follows, 1) Hoojo-dang was established in 1567 by Kim Bu-pil(1516-1577). From the beginning, Hoojo-dang, Byeol-myo(family shrine) and Ju-sa(shrine kitchen) were situated in the separate area from An-chae(main building). Later the Ik-rang(additional transept part) of Hoojo-dang was added to its main body as a room for entertainment. 2) The types of floor plan and windows of Hoojo-dang are similar to those of the lecture halls of Dosan-seowon, Sosu-seowon and Yeaan-hyangyo nearby. The main reason for the similarity of floor plan and window types in those buildings is that the students of the great Korean Confucian, Lee Hwang in 16th, managed and controlled those constructions. 3) The separate area composed of Hoojo-dang, Byeol-myo and Ju-sa was mainly designed for satisfying Confucian ceremonial principles. In addition, there are lifting doors designed for elevating the spatial flexibility.

  • This study was designed to determine whether visitor behavior at science museums differs across various exhibit styles and between Family and Non Family groups. Eight exhibits in the natural history sections of the national science museum located in Daejeon were identified to have distinctive characteristics and styles. At each selected exhibit, visitor behavior was observed for an hour. An average of eighty people stopped by each exhibit. Descriptive analyses of visitors behaviors showed that: 1) families spent more time than non-family visitors; 2) families paid more attention to exhibits, for instance, they talked and commented about the exhibits; 3) exhibit characteristics related to holding power and attention span; 4) families more frequently visited exhibits related to school curriculum rather than ones that looked attractive, fun or novel. Visitors did not play with sensory simulation types of exhibits as much as expected. This implicates that exhibit style does not guarantee long visitors holding time and attracting power. Non-significant results are explained in terms of environmental and exhibit-related factors. Several potential factors including visitor factors, setting factors, and exhibit factors are discussed and explored with topics proposed for future study.

Although it has not defined properly, it has been demanded the architectural respondence according to the environment of times since the introduction from other countries. Gimryong-sa temple, founded in 1635, and the hermitages are the most appropriate objects for analysis because there are many documents still remained. It is possible to find out that there are some architectural peculiarity after review of the document and the field survey about Geumseon-am(金仙庵=金仙臺), Hwajang-am(華藏庵), Daeseong-am(大成庵), Yangjin-am(養眞庵). In the late of Joseon Dynasty, the group of buddhist proceeded the economical development and the extension of authority based on the family culture. • This study explores the space and society of Seorin-bang(瑞麟坊), using the Hanseong-bu family registry from the Gwangmu period to demonstrate the urban organizational units used during the late Joseon dynasty known as Seo(署)-Bang(坊)-Gye(契)-Dong(洞)-Tong(統)-Ho(戶). It seeks to examine how Seorin-bang's space and society changed with time. First, the study offers approximate demarcation for Gye and Dong through spatial verification of Bang-Gye-Dong-Tong-Ho of Seorin-bang in late Joseon Dynasty, whose precise locations were formerly undetermined. Second, it explores the relationships between Bang-Gye-Dong-Tong-Ho which has been widely understood to be hierarchical by previous studies, and classifies the relationship dynamics between Gye and Dong into four types. Third, the study finds that Seorin-bang retained much of its urban structure including roads, plots, and streams and maintained stable population distribution under the Japanese colonial rule, and continuously served as place of residency for many throughout the Gwangmu period. This study has major implications in that it illustrates space and society of Seorin-bang by converting the family registry from the late Joseon Dynasty into spatial data, and observes its changes subsequent to the Japanese colonial rule.

  • Jogyeongmyo Shrine is the Sijomyo Shrine of the Joseon royal family. It is a representative building that symbolizes Jeonju, the hometown of the Joseon royal family. This study comprehensively analyzes a variety of literature, old maps, and figures, and it investigates the meaning of Jogyeongmyo Shrine as an architectural example as well as its architectural characteristics. The Jogyeongmyo Shrine was built to symbolically demonstrate the superior virtue of the royal ancestors compared to the ancestors of the gentry. King Yeongjo built Jogyeongmyo Shrine, which he considered his greatest achievement, to raise the status of the royal family and exact loyalty from the vassals. Jogyeongmyo Shrine is a unique example of an ceremonial architecture that cannot be observed in China or the previous Korean dynasties. In addition, its architecture looks different from that of ordinary shrines because both Confucian ceremonies and the function of each building were taken into consideration during construction. Although Jogyeongmyo Shrine was preserved without significant changes until the late Joseon dynasty, major modifications were made in all areas except the main shrine area during the Japanese colonial era.

  • Cowden's disease is a rare autosomal dominant, multiple hamartoma syndrome with characteristic mucocutaneous lesions. It is associated with abnormalities of the breast, thyroid, and gastrointestinal tract; and is characterized by multiple hamartomas in the gastrointestinal tract and mucocutaneous lesions such as trichilemmomas, oral papillomatosis, facial papules, and acral keratosis. A 21-year-old male patient presented with erythematous facial papules, oral mucosal papillomatosis, and punctate palmoplantar hyperkeratosis indicating a definite case of Cowden's disease. This disease derives from variable expression resulting from a mutation in the PTEN gene. Gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy revealed multiple hamartomas in the stomach and colon. On thyroid ultrasonography, several probable benign nodules were noted in the right thyroid gland. He had no pertinent family history and no other systemic findings. Further regular laboratory and image studies will be planned for our patient, as well as his family members. Sporadic Cowden's disease is rarely observed. Herein, we report a case of Cowden's disease without known family history. Dermatologists should be aware of the possibility of Cowden syndrome based on its several dermatologic findings.

  • Background: Breast malignancies are one of the leading causes of deaths in females worldwide. There are a number of risk factors associated with breast cancer but in Karachi Pakistan there are insufficient data available. Materials and Methods: A case control study was conducted on females in age group between 30-80 years. This study was accomplished by retrospective data collection in Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 108 females with primary malignancy of breast were included along with 108 matched controls. Relationship of various factors with disease was studied using logistic regression to calculate odds ratios with 95 % confidence intervals. Results: A total of 14 variables were analyzed and based on and 7 were found to be risk factors: old age, family history of breast cancer, family history of other carcinomas, personal history of breast carcinoma, early age of menarche, older age of mother at first delivery and lower number of children. Five factors, parity, breast feeding, history of oral contraceptive pills intake, past history of oophorectomy and hysterectomy showed protective associations. One variable, use of hormonal replacement therapy, showed a controversial link and one other, marital status, was not significant in this study. Conclusions: It is concluded that most of the well-known risk factors for breast cancer are also associated with the disease in the female population of Karachi, Pakistan. High risk patients should be the focus with the help of this study so that screening can be more effective for early diagnosis before clinically evident breast malignancy.
