  • Glomus tumours are vascular hamartomas that are commonly found in the hand, particularly the subungual region. They appear as solitary or multiple tumours, and often present as a bluish discoloration of the nail plate. Different diagnostic tests are outlined, as well as imaging studies such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound. Misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis of these tumours are common, while a familial tendency is a potential risk factor but not yet proven. Complete surgical excision often results in complete symptomatic relief, while recurrences are largely due to incomplete excision or the growth of a new glomus tumour. This article aims to review the key aspects of glomus tumours and provide a diagnostic algorithm so that the lesion can be recognized and treated earlier.

  • The authors have observed a rare case of neurofibroma in 13 years old male who came to the Infirmary of Dental College of Seoul National University because of painless severe swelling of approximately 11 years' duration in the left maxillofacial region and blindness of the left eye about 3 years' duration. As a result of interpretating the serial roentgenograms including tomograms and microscopic findings, we have obtained the following conclusions; 1. Neurofibroma of the patient occurred in about 2 years of age. 2. The familial tendency of the disease has been noted. 3. The growth pattern of the disease was slow, and roentgenographic images revealed severe destruction of bone with irregular borders. 4. The neurofibroma was encapsulated but Verocay body and palisading effect of cells were not seen in the microscopic picture.

  • We have surveyed the epidemiology of functional dyspepsia in 7 cases of Children and investigated the therapeutic effect on Functional Dyspepsia following 4 weeks medication of Naesowhajung-tang using Electrogastrogram. The Results were as followings: 1. Sex ratio are 6 males, 1 female; their mean ages, $9.0{\pm}1.41(7-11years)$; length, $137.2{\pm}13.86cm$; body weight, $35.3{\pm}l1.34kg$. 2. Most of subjects have a normal growth state. But one case have severe growth disturbance. Familial tendency for this disease is noted in 85.8%. 3. Abdominal pain was seen in 100% of subjects. The indicated symptom was lowed in order of abdominal pain(100%), nausea vomiting(71.43%), general fatigue(65.34%), vertigo headache(57.14%), belching(55.38%), etc. 4. The EGG finding after treatment was improved in 53%, aggrevated in 43. In cases, postprandial improvement was more remarkable than fasting improvement. Common cold and antibiotics seems to have functioned as an aggrevating factor on gastric motility. From the above results, Naesowhajung-tang seems to have been used in the treatment of functional dyspepsia for children.

  • Congenital anomalies of the head and neck region such as preauricular sinus and skin tag, thyroglossal duct cyst, branchial anomaly, cystic hygroma and dermoid cyst are common in pediatric population. It is important for pediatricians and pediatric surgeons to be familiar with the embryology and the anatomical characteristic of these lesions in order to diagnose and treat them properly. Three hundred and nineteen patients with congenital head and neck anomalies treated at Hanyang University Hospital between 1980 and 1999 were reviewed to determine the relative frequency of the anomalies and to analyze the method of management. Eight-four (25.1 %) of 335 lesions were preauricular sinus and skin tag, 81 (24.2 %) were thyroglossal duct cyst, 81 (24.2 %) branchial anomaly, 58 (17.3 %) cystic hygroma and 31 were (9.2 %) dermoid cyst. The male-to-female ratio was 1.4:1. Thyroglossal duct cyst most commonly present at 3-5years, however branchial anomalies commonly are diagnosed in children younger than 1 year. Preauricular sinus showed familial tendency in three patients and was bilateral is 33.8 %. Most head and neck anomalies in children have specific clinical and anatomical characterics. A careful history and physical examination is very useful for diagnosis and proper management. Experienced pediatric surgeons should do the initial surgery since the recurrence rate after incomplete surgical excision can be high.

  • Atopic allergy implies a familial tendency to manifest alone or in combination such as asthma, rhinitis, urticaria and atopic dermatitis. The patient with atopic dermatitis shows a variety of humoral and cell-mediated immune dysfunction, including an elevation of serum IgE level, multiple positive immediate skin tests to a variety of antigen. A 30 year old female patient suffering from an atopic dermatitis on face, has been administered a stellate ganglion block(SGB) with a 1% mepivacaine 5cc. She complained of bronchial hyperresponsivness such as cough, soreness, and inspiration difficulty for 5 days following the treatment, so we have reduced 1% mepivacaine dose from 5cc to 3cc. She had no complain of bronchial hyperresponsivenss and the lesion of atopic dermatitis was improved. From our result we conclude that SGB appears to be a good choice for the treatment of the atopic dermatitis and only 1% mepivacaine 3cc is possible in complete SGB.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of obesity, and the factors related to children's obesity. Method: The subjects were 568 students (5th, 6th grades) of ten elementary schools in a small city of about 350,000. Subjects self-reported after being instructed by researchers to identify health habits and attitudes toward obesity. The Rohrer index was calculated by using annual physical examinations preformed by the schools. Result: 17.5% of the subjects were under weight, 22.2% were overweight, and 60.3% were normal. In girls, the under weight group was much larger, in boys the overweight group was larger. 46.2% of overweight children had a familial tendency to obesity. 60.6% of boys and 60% of girls were on a diet in order to improve their looks or to prevent ridicule from mends. On average, one-third of the subjects misunderstood their own weight level. Subjects spent 3-4hours on weekdays, and over 6hours on the weekend watching TV or using personal computers. The overweight group enjoyed eating meat, fish, beans and vegetables, while the normal group tended to prefer fruit. Conclusion: Health education programs which guide elementary school students to form better health habits, more accurate perceptions of their own body weight, and better attitudes toward obesity and which make students aware of the importance of exercise, a healthy diet, and reducing time spent in front of TVs and computers may help them to keep at their appropriate weight.

Age distribution of households showed the highest occurence in the group of 40 to 49 years of age in the both sexes. Families with five members showed highest occurence, and the average number of familial members was 5.7 persons per one household. 2. More than half of the householders were some independent enterprisers rather than to be the employees and most of the household had one familial member engaged in more or less liberal profession. 3. 19.4% of households moved into these cities from 1941 to 1945. 4. 40.5% of all the households had their own houses. The possession rate of one's own house was higher in the households which had long period of residence in Japan. 5. 83.5% of all households had various medical insurances. And the 6.2% of the household which had no insurance stated that the reason for not being affiliated was 'because to be the foreigner'. Household of shorter dwelling period had less tendency to be affiliated to the various insurances. 6. In 41.3% of all the households, average medical expenditure amounted to 1000-5000 Yen per month. And only 25.6% of household stated that they do not worry about the medical expenditure for the futures. 7. 66.3% of households were consulting to medical doctors for their sickness, such as toothache, severe coughing, profuse sputum, children's fever and stomach pain etc. 8. 59.4% of households were using the facilities of health center services. The health center service was used mainly for individual health service rather than the environmental aspect. And 19.8% of households were not aware of health center activities. 9. It was found that 23.5% of households received the screening test of the tuberculosis and adult diseases. Especially, the rate of screening test of the adult diseases showed as following ; stomach cancer, 8.9% ; hypertension, 7.9% ; diabetes mellitus, 2.1% ; and uterus cancer, 1.6%. 10. Birth control was carried out in 17.3% of households but not in 52.5%. The chief reason of birth control was 'because of poor maternal health' (40.0%) or 'should not be done' (5.4%). 11. Most of them are obtaining the knowledges and informations on family plannings. public nuisance problems and nutritions etc. by means of the mass communications, while those no preventing diseases and the environmental hygiene through the administrative organizations.

  • This study aims to examine the general tendency of suicidal ideation in single person households and to analyse the differences and effects of related variables(sociodemographic variables, characteristics of single person households, happiness and depression) on suicidal ideation. For achieving these purposes, a survey was conducted using questionnaires, based on quota sampling that considers the distribution of population in each dong of one Gu in Gwangju. Finally, data of 686 single person households were used for analysis. The study findings were as follows. The average score of suicidal ideation in single person households was 6.47 points, it was somewhat higher as compared to prior research that was targeting general households. And the average score of happiness index was 4.17 points, depression was 33.11 points. The level of suicidal ideation in single person households was significantly different according to age, occupation, economic status, health status, period of single life, life satisfaction, and contact with family. In addition, the level of depression(${\beta}=.24$, p<.01) had the biggest effect on suicidal ideation in single person households and it was followed by happiness index(${\beta}=-.19$, p<.05) and family visit(${\beta}=-.15$, p<.05). The total explanatory power was 37%. These findings imply that it is important to find a high mental health risk group and treat it early, because there is a high possibility that single person households might have mental health problems by being isolated or alienated from society. In addition, diverse program and services designed to maintain familial bonds despite family members living separately are needed.

  • We collected a total of 109 patients with intersex during the past 16 years (1966-1982). They were summerized as follows: Klinefelter's syndrome, the most common disease, was found in 76 cases, Turner's syndrome in 3 cases, true hermaphroditism in 5 cases, male pseudohermaphroditism in 5 cases, female pseudohermaphroditism in 13 cases and others in 7 cases in which 2 cases of XX male syndrome, 1 case of agonadism, 1 case of hernia uteri inguinale and 3 cases of unclassified intersex were included. 2 mosaic Klinefelter's syndrome showed 46/47 XX/XXY and 1 mosaic Turner's syndrome showed 45/46 XO/XX. The 5 patients with true hermaphroditism included 2 cases that had an ovary on one side and a testis on the other, 1 case, seperate ovary and testis on each side, 1 case, an ovary on one side and a seperate testis and ovary on the other and 1 case, an ovary on one side and an ovotestis on the other. Sex chromosome study on the true hermaphroditism revealed 46 XX in 2 patients and 46/46 XX/XY mosaicism in 3 patients. In male pseudohermaphroditism, all patients had a short and blind vagina. Of which, familial tendency was found in 1 case. Her sister had operation for sex reversal for female. In female psedohermaphroditism, all the patients were adrenogenital syndrome. Operations for clitoridectomy and vaginoplasty were performed on 10 patients. Hydrocortisone was given to 6 patients. Menstruation started to occur 6 months and 4 months after the medical therapy respectively in 2 cases.

  • This study was designed to explore whether the temperament of a child influences the physical growth. The Korean version of the Parent Questionnaire for Children developed by Thomas, Chess and Korn was applied to 395 Korean children whose ages ranged from 3 years to 7 years. Simultaneously the height and the weight were measured for each child and converted into percentile scale according to the Growth Curve and the Weight Percentile Table for the Height of Korean children. Statistical analysis was performed among 9 temperamental categories, height and weight percentiles for the age and weight percentiles for the height using the first-order partial correlation analysis, controlling for the familial mean income per month. Results showed that the more temperamentally difficult a child is, the lower weight he has when compared with the children of the same age or the same height. Although there were some differences, the tendency of the above findings was maintained both in male and female children. These results show that the temperament may influence the physical growth as well as the psychological development.
