Purpose: We studied the correlation between BBS (Berg Balance Scale), Functional Reach Test (FRT), Timed-Up & Go test (TUG), Stability Index (STI), MBI (Modified Barthel Index), and Fall History. Methods: We recruited 20 stroke patients from the Gang Dong Gu Health Care Center in Seoul, Korea. All subjects could walk with or without an assisting device. Subjects first completed a questionnaire pertaining to their fall history and Activity of Daily Living (MBI), and then were evaluated with BBS, TUG, FRT, and STI. We used the Tetrax posturography system that calculates a STI based on fluctuations in vertical ground reaction forces. The data were analyzed using a Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Results: The BBS and FRT (p<0.05) and MBI (p<0.01) showed a significant positive correlation. BBS negatively correlated with STI and TUG (p<0.01). Fall history and BBS, TUG, MBI, FR, STI did not correlate. Conclusion: The BBS helps predict weight shifting, walking, and ADL, but is not good for predicting fall risk. So, we need to study about factors that affect falling.
The in-situ Compaction test using sand cone (RC) and Plate Bearing Capacity Test (PBT) has been widely used for evaluating the subgrade and subbase condition on the pavement system. However, because the in-situ RC and PBT test are expensive and take plenties of time for operation, these are very difficult to figure out the in-situ characteristics of subgrade and subbase strength in detail. Therefore, for faster and economical operation, this study is to compare the Light Falling Weight Tests and propose the LFWD test as the in-situ Compaction test. This study suggests the relationship between in-situ RC value, $K_{30}$, $M_R$ and $E_{LFWD}$ of the subgrade and subbase materials in Korea using the laboratory and in-situ testing.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of fiber grid reinforcement on the thickness reduction of asphalt pavement. Test sections were constructed on the national highway to evaluate the structural capacity of asphalt pavement with the reinforced fiber grid and normal asphalt pavement. METHODS : Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests were performed to measure the structural capacity of test sections. The loads of the FWD test are 4.1 ton, 8.0 ton, 10.0 ton, and loaded twice, respectively. The test sections consist of a reference asphalt pavement section, an asphalt pavement section reduced with a 5-cm base layer thickness, and a fiber grid reinforced asphalt pavement section reduced with a 5-cm base layer thickness. In addition, strain data was collected using strain gauges installed in the test sections. RESULTS : The results of the FWD tests showed that the deflections of the pavement section reinforced with the fiber grid was reduced by about 14% compared with that of the reference asphalt pavement section. The strain at the bottom of the asphalt surface layer of the pavement section reduced to a 5-cm base thickness and reinforced with a fiber grid was similar to that at the bottom of the asphalt layer of the reference asphalt pavement. CONCLUSIONS : The results of the FWD and strain tests showed the possibility of the pavement thickness reduction by reinforcement with a fiber grid.
PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between the FWD back-calculated modulus and dynamic modulus of asphalt layers for existing asphalt pavements. METHODS: To evaluate the dynamic modulus of the asphalt mixture in the existing and new asphalt layers, the uniaxial direct tension test was conducted on small asphalt specimens obtained from the existing asphalt-covered pavements. A dynamic modulus master curve was estimated by using the uniaxial direct tension test for each asphalt layer. The falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing was conducted on the test sections, and the modulus values of pavement layers were back-calculated using the genetic algorithm and the finite element method based back-calculation program. The relationship between measured and back-calculated asphalt layer moduli was examined in this study. The normalized dynamic modulus was adopted to predict the stiffness characteristics of asphalt layers more accurately. RESULTS: From this study, we can conclude that there is no close relationship between dynamic modulus of first layer and back-calculated asphalt modulus. The dynamic moduli of second and third asphalt layers have some relation with asphalt stiffness. Test results also showed that the normalized dynamic modulus of the asphalt mixture is closely related to the FWD back-calculated modulus with 0.73 of R square value. CONCLUSIONS: The back-calculated modulus of asphalt layer can be used as an indicator of the stiffness characteristics of asphalt layers in the asphalt-covered pavements.

Objective: Falling is a common cause of head injury in preschool aged children. We investigated the characteristics of mild head injuries caused by falling and the association between body weight and occurrence of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted on head-injured preschool-aged children that visited the emergency department from January 2012 to December 2015. Characteristics such as age, sex, weight, free fall height, floor type, and presence of TBI, as defined as cerebral hemorrhage or skull fracture, were investigated. We calculated body weight percentiles by calibrating age and weight and categorized them into four quartile ranges. We grouped all included cases into two groups according to the presence of TBI. The characteristics of the two groups were compared by using chi-square test, and the association with TBI was investigated by using binomial logistic regression. Results: A total of 701 children were included, and TBI was observed in 95 children. Children with TBI were younger. The proportion of children with TBI was higher in the third and fourth quartiles of the body weight group as well as according to soft floor and fall from high height (${\geq}1m$). The odds of soft floor being associated with TBI was higher than the odds for hard floor (odds ratio, 2.734; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.597-4.680). The odds of high height (${\geq}1m$) being associated with TBI was higher than that for low height (odds ratio, 2.306; 95% CI, 1.155-4.601), and the odds ratio for the weight percentile group was 1.228 (95% CI, 1.005-1.499). Conclusion: Prevalence of TBI after falling in preschool-aged children might be associated with high fall-height and body weight quartiles.
PURPOSES : This paper presents a comparison study between dynamic and static analyses of falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing, which is a test used for evaluating layered material stiffness. METHODS: In this study, a forward model, based on nonlinear subgrade models, was developed via finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The subgrade material coefficients from granular and fine-grained soils were used to represent strong and weak subgrade stiffnesses, respectively. Furthermore, the nonlinearity in the analysis of multi-load FWD deflection measured from intact PCC slab was investigated using the deflection data obtained in this study. This pavement has a 14-inch-thick PCC slab over fine-grained soil. RESULTS: From case studies related to the nonlinearity of FWD analysis measured from intact PCC slab, a nonlinear subgrade model-based comparison study between the static and dynamic analyses of nondestructive FWD tests was shown to be effectively performed; this was achieved by investigating the primary difference in pavement responses between the static and dynamic analyses as based on the nonlinearity of soil model as well as the multi-load FWD deflection. CONCLUSIONS : In conclusion, a comparison between dynamic and static FEM analyses was conducted, as based on the FEM analysis performed on various pavement structures, in order to investigate the significance of the differences in pavement responses between the static and dynamic analyses.
Behavior of concrete pavement due to temperature gradient was investigated for 48 hours at test road using Falling Weight Deflectometer. The deflections at slab center changed similarly to those of ambient temperature and temperature gradients in the slab. And rapid variations in the deflections were observed between 8 to 12 in the morning. However, dynamic modulus of subgrade reaction and joint deflections showed reverse trends to the ambient temperature and temperature gradients. The dynamic modulus of subgrade reaction was significantly affected by temperature gradient when its value got higher. Backcalculated elastic moduli were obtained using AREA method and Method of Equivalent Thickness. The trends of the backcalculated elastic modulus were similar to those of dynamic modulus of subgrade reaction. Measured load transfer efficiencies showed maximum peak in the morning due to dowel locking. However, additional effort is necessary to verify the result.

The field plate load test a good potential for determining modulus since it measures both plate pressure and settlement. However, because The field plate load test is expensive and takes plenty of time for operation, it is very difficult to figure out the test characteristics of railroad roadbed in detail. For faster and economical operation, the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer(DCP) and the Light Falling Weight Deflectometer(LFWD) have been utilized for estimating the bearing capacity of railroad roadbed. The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between the test(PLT, DCP, LFWD) of the railroad roadbed in Korea. The DCP test and LFWD test for evauluating the strength of railroad roadbed materials produced in Korea are presented in this paper.
Deflections of jointed concrete pavements at test road are monitored during 48 hours. And methods of calibration with respect to curling deflections are suggested. Relations between deflection ratio of center to joint at test time and deflection ratio of center at test time to center at reference time are described by regression. From deflections at test time, deflections transformed to reference time which gives minimum deflections in a day are estimated through regression curves and concluded to propose as a alternative method of curling calibration with more data accumulation.

Semi rigid pavement is a pavement type using advantages of both flexibility of asphalt pavement and rigidity of concrete pavement by infiltrating cement paste into voids of open graded asphalt mixtures. The semi rigid pavement has better smoothness and smaller driving vibration or noise comparing to the concrete pavement, and has smaller permanent deformation and has temperature falling effect comparing to the asphalt pavement. The temperature falling effect were investigated at a semi rigid overlay pavement test section, and the temperature falling and water retaining effects were verified by measuring the temperature and weight of specimens at a housetop. Horizontal and vertical stresses and strains were compared by structural analysis of the semi rigid pavement and asphalt pavement using the Abaquser o, a commercial 3D finite element analysis program. The results were verified by Bisar 3.0, a multi-layered elastic analysis program. Performance of the semi rigid pavement and asphalt pavement were compared by predicting fatigue cracking based on the structural analysis results.
