Falling film rectification involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer between vapor and liquid interface. In the present work, the adiabatic rectification process of ammonia-water vapor on the vertical plate was investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor mixture were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. The model could predict the film thickness, the pressure gradient, and the mass transfer rate. The effects of Reynolds number and ammonia concentration of solution and vapor mixture, rectifier length, and the enhancement of mass transfer in each phases were investigated. The stripping of water in vapor mixture occurred new the entrance of ammonia solution, which imposed the proper size of an adiabatic rectifier. Rectifier efficiency increased as film Reynolds number increased and as vapor mixture Reynolds number decreased. The improvement of rectifier efficiency was significant with the enhancement of mass transfer in falling film.

This is the second report of a three part study on the absorption and heat transfer characteristics of absorber, the correlation of refrigerating capacity and heating capacity. The 2nd report deals with the heat transfer characteristics of a vertical falling film type absorber of inner copper tube. The solute is LiBr-Water solution(60wt%) and the solvent is water vapor. The film Reynoles numbers are varied in the range of 35~130. The states of LiBr solution at the top of absorber are supercooled liquid and superheated liquid. The results are summarized as follows ; Heat transfer results reveal that for the absorption of falling film, the state of LiBr solution appears to be influential in determining the heat transfer. Thus, for the state of supercooled liquid, heat transfer coefficient decreases with increasing the film Reynolds number, but in the condition of superheated liquid, it increases conversely. The mass transfer coefficients that were presented in the 1st.report and heat transfer coefficients of this paper are presented as the dimensionless correlation. The optimum water flowrate which brings about maximum value of heat flux in the film exists, and that increases with increasing the cooling water temperature.

Numerical analyses have been performed to estimate the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients in absorption process of the LiBr aqueous solution and the total heat and mass transfer rates in a vertical tube absorber which is coolING ed by air. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the circular tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by water vapor in tube. Effects of film Reynolds number on heat and mass transfer coefficients have been also investigated. Especially, effects of tube diameter have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the tube. Based on the analysis it has been found that the total mass transfer rate increases rapidly in a region with low film Reynolds number(10 ~ 40) as the film Reynolds number increases, while decreases beyond that region. The total heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing the tube diameter.

Among the heat/mass exchange units composing an absorption system, the absorber, where the refrigerant vapor is absorbed into the liquid solution is the one least understood. In the present study, the effects of non-absorbable gas on the absorption process of aqueous lithium bromide solution falling film inside a vertical tube were experimentally investigated. In the range of film Reynolds number of 30 ~ 195, heat and mass transfer characteristics were investigated as a function of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration, 0.2 ~ 20%. An increase of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration degraded the mass transfer rate dramatically in the absorption process. The reduction of mass transfer rate was significant for the addition of small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor. At film Reynolds number of 130, an increase of non-absorbable gas concentration from 0.2 to 6.0% resulted in the decrease of mass transfer rate by 36% and 20% of non-absorbable gas by 59%. However the decrease of film Nusselt number with the increase of volumetric concentration of non absorbable gas was relatively smaller than the decrease of Sherwood number. Critical film Reynolds number was identified to exist for the maximum heat and mass transfer regardless of the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gases.

In the present study, an evaporative generation process of ammonia-water solution film on the vertical plate was analysed. For the utilization of waste heat, hot water of low temperature was used as the heat source. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor mixture were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. Counter-current solution-vapor flow resulted in the refrigerant vapor of the higher ammonia concentration than that of co-current flow. Eve the rectification of refrigerant vapor was observed near the inlet of solution film in counter-current flow. For the optimum operation of generator using hot water, numerical experiments, based on the heat exchange and generation efficiencies. revealed the inter-relationships among the Reynolds number of the solution film and hot water, and the length of generator. Enhancement of heat and mass transport in the solution film was found to be very effective for the improvement of generation performance, especially at high solution flow rate.

The present study predicted the effect of the flow rate of coolant on the absorption performance of a vertical falling film type absorber Heat and mass transfer peformances were numerically investigated. The exit temperatures of solution and coolant were decreased as the flow rate of the coolant was increased at the film Reynolds number of 100. The absorption mass flux was increased and then decreased as the distance from the inlet of the absorber was increased. The distance showing the maximum absorption mass flux was ranged from 0.3 to 0.5m. The heat flux and the absorption mass flux were increased and then slowly decreased as the flow rate of the coolant was increased. The maximum values were obtained at the flow rate of coolant of 2.0L/min.

An unsteady quasi one-dimensional model of momentum, heat and mass transfer in a falling film of a vertical plate absorber which is cooled by air was developed using the integral method. Energy conservation of the absorber wall is considered in the model. The model can predict absorption rate, film thickness and mean velocity as well as concentration and temperature profiles. Predictions of steady state temperature and concentration profiles for LiBr/water system for constant wall temperature condition are in good agreement with the two-dimensional finite difference method solutions. Effects of operating conditions, such as convective heat transfer coefficient between the cooling air and the absorber wall, cooling air temperature and film thickness at inlet, on absorption rate of water vapor into LiBr/water solution were shown.

The objective of the present study was to investigate heat and mass transfer characteristics in a vertical falling film type absorber using LiBr-$H_2O$ solution with 6owt%. The experimental apparatus consisted of an absorber with inner diameter of 17.2 mm and length of 1150mm, a generator, an evaporator/condenser, a solution tank, a sampling trap etc. The parameters were solution temperature of 45 and $50^{\circ}C$, coolant temperature of 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, and film Reynolds numbers from 50 to 150. Pressure drop in the absorber increased as solution and coolant temperatures decreased. Pressure drop in the absorber increased up to the film Reynolds number of 90, and then decreased at the further increase of the Reynolds number above 90. The maximum absorption mass flux observed at the film Reynolds number of 90. Absorption mass flukes increased as coolant temperature decreased. Absorption mass fluxes and heat transfer coefficients under subcooled condition were larger than those under superheated condition. Heat transfer coefficients were affected by solution temperature more than coolant temperature. The maximum absorption effectiveness under the subcooled condition was 23% for coolant temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and 31% for coolant temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ under the present experimental conditions.

In the absorption process of water vapor in a liquid film, the composition of the gas phase, in which a non-absorbable gas is combined with the absorbate influences the transport characteristics remarkably. In the present study, the absorption processes of water vapor into aqueous solution of lithium bromide in the presence of non-absorbable gases were investigated analytically. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and gas phase were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. It was found that the mass transfer resistance in gas phase increased with the concentration of non-absorbable gas. However the primary resistance to mass transfer was in the liquid phase. As the concentration of non-absorbable gas in the absorbate increased, the liquid-vapor interfacial temperature and concentration of absorbate in solution decreased, which resulted in the reduction of absorption rate. The reduction of mass transfer rate was found to be significant for the addition of a small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor, especially at the outlet of an absorber where non-absorbable gases accumulated. At higher non-absorbable gas concentration, the decrease of absorption flux was almost linear to the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gas.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the absorbing characteristics in a vertical falling film type absorber using LiBr-H$H_2O$ solution as working fluids with the concentration of 60 wt%. The experimental apparatus consists of an absorber with the diameter of 17.2 mm and the length of 1150 mm, a generator, an evaporator (condenser), a weak solution tank and a sampling trap device and so on. The parameters were the solution temperatures of 45 and 50$^{\circ}$C, coolant temperatures of 30 and 35$^{\circ}$C, and the film Reynolds numbers from 50 to 150. The pressure drop in the absorber increased as the solution and coolant temperatures decreased. The pressure drop in the absorber increased up to the film Reynolds number of 90, however, decreased at the film Reynolds number above 90. The maximum absorption mass flux was observed at the film Reynolds number of 90. Absorption mass fluxes increased as the coolant temperature decreased. Accordingly, absorption mass fluxes and heat transfer coefficients under the subcooled condition increased more than those under the superheated condition. It is claimed that heat transfer coefficients are deeply affected by the solution temperature more than the coolant temperature within the experimental range.
